I don't mind having unique armor for party members, as long as there's at least 5 unique armors for each party member, but as it is, with DA2 spanning 10 years and having only one armor for each squad mate, this seems worse than ME2's way.

Also, when Laidlaw says, "As they progress, and actually, it's worth noting that we are covering a 10 year history here, the follower's armor will progress on its own as well-- like the follower will, between periods of time, as they progress, they will actually grow stronger-- they'll kind of keep up-- they're not going to be in the same stuff they were wearing at level 1."
That seems to indicate to me that it will be changing visually. You could say he's just using ambiguous wording to give him the wiggle room to say he never actually said that and the outfit stays the same visually the whole way through, but I'm going to be an optimist on this until proven otherwise.
Considering past history and the fact that he goes out of his way to point out things like you can change weapons, I see no reason to be optimistic given that vague statement.

It also implies that it even matters somehow to logically try and make sense of why a video game character would be wearing the same outfit for an extended period of time xD

How does this bode for re-playability though? If your characters wears pretty much the same in every playthrough. And it also sounded like they would be using weapons that suited their personality mostly. Isabella using 2 daggers etc. I kind of suspect you can`t even equip her with an axe (for example). And where the heck would one stuff runes on her outfit? Down her bra?

Yes, apparently you are correct, and I have already eaten my hat.
Now I am a bit worried about them selling off special armor as "DLC". Them being so noncommittal about the toolset doesn't help.

Yeah I agree. It wouldn't even have to be five each to make me happy, I mean matching ME2's two outfits per character would be a start. I would be happy with two or three unique outfits (not just re-coloured versions) per character, this would give enough variety and not hog development time I wouldn't have thought (but what do I know lol). That said I still find the whole thing a little unclear, Mike didn't outright say that most party members would get one outfit, although the fact it is the exception rather than the rule is certainly worrying.

I'm a console gamer and I loved the inventory, being able to switch out armor between companions, so don't blame it on us.

At this point, and with this info, it's really a matter of trusting or not trusting the dev team. Personally, I trust them. I think they'll give us at least a couple of outfits per companion.
Well, I'd have no problem of you had several "unique" outfits for each companion in the game. But it sounds like you get the one and can change the stats on it and still use rings, amulets and all that, but those still don't change the companion's appearance. So you can give Isabela some nice amulet but she'll have her Mr.T bling grafted to her neck.
I think perhaps you misunderstand me- I'm saying that in this new system, its the equivalent of visually being forced to have Morrigan in those Witch robes the whole game. So even if I wanted now to make her an arcane warrior and slap some armor on her, you wouldn't be able to do that. If they're going this new route, I'd like some measure of choice and agency still, beyond just stat tweaking their existing outfit. Its just another step in taking away player choice.Daewan wrote...
I had no problem changing Morrigan out of her Chasind gear whenever I felt like it. What stopped you from slapping some Tevinter robes on her, or even a Chantry robe? Both changed her appearance significantly. Or were you expecting her to change clothes automatically?
Mike Laidlaw wrote...
Some may, but that is more the exception rather than the rule. Their equipment, however, will evolve over time from a statistical point of view, as will your access to upgrades. Apologies for the confusion.
So they'll be wearing the same clothes for 10 years...
And in looking at those screens of the inventory, is it also the case that companions now no longer have a spot for helmets/headgear? I guess that answers the helmet toggle question and the goofy mage hats....
And DW rogues can only equip daggers as a pair? So no more one long handed sword + dagger, or dual axes or axe+dagger, everything has to be equipped as a group?
Before anyone pegs me as some reactionary that simply wants DA2 to be a DAO clone, no thats not it at all. Unique looks are cool if they would have been handled like Morrigan in DAO- each companion having the one or 2 unique looks but then being able to have other stuff beyond that. I'm guessing thats not feasible for resources sake, but still, visually at least this just comes across as a step backwards and limits player choice and agency, which should be paramount in an RPG.DAOME2FTW wrote...

Nah doesn't look like it, you can see Hawke is wearing 'Ferelden field boots' in his screenshot, and Hawke himself has all the old slots. It looks to me like for the player character it's business as usual. Still hoping at least a handful of companions get different looks over the ten years however.

What about Hawke? He/she still has the headgear slot, I thought it was as much an issue for the main character as the companions?

But I think the notion that there will be far less looting and thus far less gear is definitely not out of question. Since we're only properly equipping Hawke with boots, armor, gauntlets and helms those'll be much less numerous this go around. Which makes me wonder how the economy is possibly changing as selling loot was a big part of Origins...Apollo Starflare wrote...

Sure Hawke has the headgear slot like Origins, but Isabela didn't. So it would seem if you don't even give companions any headgear you've partially solved the problem of a toggle. Not that the headgear toggle would be any problem if we get a toolset for DA2...
