Are Bethany and Isabela's physical models based on how hawt they'd be to men? I totally think so.

Is this fan service? I suppose.

Do I mind? Nope. I'll forgive you if the male NPCs are smoking hawt man candy no less than 6 foot 3 with six packs, perfectly sculpted chest and a face sculpted by the very GODS.

All I want is equality and Varric is not man enough for me. Just saying.

EDIT: Replaced Leliana with Isabela.

This. Varric totally creeps me out

Personally I like Aqua's armor in BBS. ...That said everyone's armor was over the top in the game (except the mechanical armor which looked like this:http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100927174123/kingdomhearts/images/6/6d/Aqua_armor.png) So I have nothing against sexy. I just want sexy across the board.

I really wonder what female Bioware employees think of all this. I mean, the devs tend to avoid these topics like the plague but still. I'm curious.

I'm more likely to be offended by female characters' personalities falling into certain stereotypes.

I don't have a problem with how female characters generally appear in videogames. Large chest, small waist? Sure. Doesn't bother me. It doesn't bother me either if I have a warrior in a plate thong jumping around killing demons. Goodness knows I have actually gone to great lengths to acquire such equipment (in certain games) after discovering that it exists, because I like the idea of killing demons in plate thongs.

As long as the appearance fits the character's personality, I'm okay with it. For instance, if they put Aveline in a wispy dress cut low to her navel, and high heels, I would make this face: Image IPB

But the first time I saw Isabela's concept/model, I said, "*gigglesnort* Cool."

I want my Epic Hawke to bear a ginormous sword that is thrust up into the sky with a beam of light from the tip to the very heavens.I want my shirt ripped with strategically placed dabs of blood that only accentuate my idealized curves. I want fur trimmed boots (NON NEGOTIABLE)

I want hawt, skimpily clad NPC dudes of every race clinging to my muscular legs in a literal body pile of yearning male damsel hood.

Because though I am a chick, I watched too much 80's fantasy and that is what I believe all heroes should be like. EVERY hero.

If you make me look like the side kick or the damsel chick, how can I be the hero, Bioware? HOW?!!

Awesome!, but what about breaking out into dance?

The average romantic comedy has nothing resembling a human being within it.

Jane Austen is pretty funny, though. Or are we talking about movies?

I've never thought of Jane Austen's works as romantic comedies but I understand why others might. I suppose it's the difference between a love story and a story with love in it? Totally personal viewpoint.

Would you consider something like Wilde's The Importance of Being Ernest as a romantic comedy?

That dream died when Bioware said a talking cod piece would not be in the game.

Would you feel differently if the women characters had a strength cap in the game? Or how about men having a dexerity cap?

-btw...not saying that a large chest is a plus.

There are in fact a good number of RPG's that have rulesets like that, it never really made much sense to me in a fantasy setting though.  It's not like anyone male or female would be able to wield the 2handers in DA2 to begin with.

I'm trying to puzzle it out, but I don't see how it at all relates.

The women being presented in the game are not fighters, visually speaking.  The men are.  So are you saying that the ridiculous female body model should be accompanied by gimped stats?  Uh...  no.  That would basically mean no one would ever play a female PC or recruit a female NPC.  How about we bring the body model in line with the stats rather than the other way around.

Your argument is that the women in the game should better
match their body-type of being fighters and athletic, rather than them being bodacious
because it is unrealistic. On the flip side one could make the argument that
both men and women have different talents and skills that can attributed to
gender and body-type, and that is unrealistic that both gender's are
represented equally at a stat-based level.

Of course that would be ridiculous if they did gimp a male or female character
because of gender, which is a reason why body type should not matter.

I'm all for different body types, because this is a fantasy game...but please don't
argue realism when there is already a glaring problem that can be attributed to
being unrealistic.

So I'm not the only one who feels this way. :wizard:

Seriously, between ME1, ME2 and DA, there were some of the coolest female personalities I've seen in gaming. God forbid they look sexy as well.

So the answer to having forced bodies on us is to gimp our stats? :/

Now if we picked said body choice and recieved gimped stats in return I could understand. But...we didn't. The devs did.

Gotcha. I pretty much feel the same except that having the giant bewbs wasp waist thing be the norm for videogames sort of irks me. I don't mind if it fits the character (Isabela is a good example) or if it fits the tone the game is going for (Bayonetta, DOA).

My beef is more with characters like Female Hawke and her mom also having ginormous breasts, and the fact that DA did not seem like a plate thong kinda game to me. Though I will admit to sometimes enjoying slaying things in plate thongs and/or painted-on catsuity things. >_>

Look, obviously since every male NPC needs to be based completely on my needs as this is a universal construct of what makes a good male NPC, I had suggested that they all have dancing skills, and come equipped with talking cod pieces.

But Bioware shockingly disagrees that my opinion is the only one that counts. It makes no sense, I know!!

----------------------------

On topic, I think Sheryl hit the nail on the proverbial **lls. Maybe Isabela is supposed to be somewhat hot to trot. Maybe Aveline is supposed to be a female jock. Maybe their personalities and models reflect the character.

Male Hawke still looks like a young Jerry Garcia, though.

What Anarya said, basically. Isabela is fine, but having that same body type for every female makes me kind of sad. Unless it's not finalized and not everyone ends up looking like that, but  I won't get my hopes up.

As for the Varric commentaries people are making... I'd say more since my inclination is to defend Varric and dwarven honor. Oh well, dwarves are awesome and it's all your losses :P

Well the fact that a lot of us have been saying pretty much exactly what is in the second quote since about the time the images if characters first started coming out is what has me so thoroughly baffled about the intended humor in the first quote.

This is the argument I use when anyone cries "Fantasies don't need to be realistic!" and "well, throwing fireballs isn't realistic, either!":

Fantastical elements aren't held by the same expectations as real-world ones because there is no basis for comparison. People throw fireballs? Well, magic doesn't exist here in the real world so they can do that. It's when things like the ability to throw fireballs under water that people start feeling uneasy about it. Still, it can be written away as magic fire. That's okay.

A creature like a Western-style dragon has a few set standards we expect (some sort of element of lizard and it breathes fire), but after that, they're free to do as they please. They don't exist.

But women do exist in real life. And, in real life, those proportions are highly unrealistic and detract from the setting. DA was rooted in reality, the nature of that makes it grounding. It's more compelling because the fantastic elements are off-set by the realistic part.

This may not hurt your immersion, but it hurts mine. I said this: I see it and feel marginalized as a gamer. I see it and feel like my female characters are being undermined.

And stat restrictions are a sticky road that we were told not to go down.
