I actually like Jacob quite a bit, I just also had the icky feeling that I was sexually harassing him when doing the romance, so I went and did Space Batman instead. I don't mind "the priiiiiiize" line, to me it reads as cheesy role play. Maybe because my husband was military and, well, anyway. It's no different than if he was playing at being a pizza delivery guy and Shepard couldn't find her wallet or something, just fun.

To be honest , I championed Jacob and his place on the team when others were denouncing him. Then I played the romance section, and it was all downhill from there. Some things just can't be unseen.

But Lukas clearly is a good writer and we've all battered him enough in this thread.

Oh, I agree. Interpretation is at least half, probably more, on the viewer, and I am prone to looking at things that way. I didn't feel comfortable romancing Kaiden either because of his reaction to the opening bit.

Well, you do what he does as well as he's done it for as long as he's done it...you've got a lot more win stacked up on your side of the table than most.

And besides, he gets to call me "new guy" at least once a month. Privileges of being the guy who did all my fresh-faced-writer-noob training, back in the day.

That wasn't enough?  I'm pretty sure though not 100% certain Lukas wrote Minsc, too.  The right people appear to be in the thread to confirm that.

I think that was an "old man" joke.  He probly has an onion on his belt and shakes his fist at clouds!

Boo totally makes up for everything! I thought Jacob was a nice guy and agood person - just not my cup of tea.in the romance department. Maybe it's because femShep pounced on him like a piece of meat (not that being aggressive is bad, but it just didn't really work for me in this case).

By my recollection, both Luke and David have been involved in writing Minsc in different capacities.

I fell out of my seat laughing during the whole exchange in the AI core.  The artists deserve a bunch of credit too, Joker's eyebrow raise couldn't have been better timed.

Leliana's Song makes me regret all the times I'd have Lel on the side while romancing Morrigan or Alistair.

Warden: Say you have tales you could tell me so I can fetishize your accent?

Leliana: Sure, what would you like to hear?

Warden: Anything - I have recipe book I took from my now-dead Nanny's kitchen.

Leliana: I can tell you of my time captured and brutalized that led to my time in the Chantry?

Warden: Mmm... yes. Go on.

*shudders* My wardens are complete a-holes.

Yep, a very good example of what I was talking about. Props must be given to Chris L'Etoile for the actual punchline (he was EDI's primary writer). I took the much longer early conversation we both worked on, got feedback from tech design about how the mechanics of the mission would flow, and to fit the speed and tone I cut the dialogue down to it's base elements so it wouldn't be too long and drag the energy down. Then the actors nailed it and cine built an amazing moment, and audio punctuated the heck out of it. No one person can claim that scene.

edit for more props.

Heh, well, let me just catch my breath after the body-blows of this thread, because for starters I wrote Jacob. I quite like him, the man has his act together, but yeah, I see how the cumulative effect of a lot of factors could be viewed a certain way by some people (ooh, look at me duck and weavePosted Image).

While I haven't played through the Jacob romance (but have seen the numerous "priiiize" videos...I agree, it's awkward), Jacob as presented to male Shepard works fairly well as a "bromance".  There are very few characters in RPG's that fill the drinking-buddy, "I've got your back" kind of role, so when I played ME2 Jacob seemed to slide very easily into this, which was refreshing.

I think part of this is because Jacob has his act together and doesn't have all that many issues to deal with.  In other words, he's a complete, well-balanced, mature adult. :)  I think this works against him for most players.  Most player characters like to feel like they're a critical part of their companions' lives.  An interesting NPC should have issues they need to resolve through the course of the adventure, and of course the PC will help them solve it in the form of interesting personal sidequests :) (that, and randomly looting strangers' homes, are staples of RPG's).  Of course, this begs the question: is it possible to make an NPC interesting who has no obvious personal problems, or are such problems defining traits that keep characters memorable?

By the way, it probably didn't help that Shepard looks like he/she wants to jump into Jacob's pants every time you initiate a conversation with Jacob.  The way that Shepard leans against the table when you start up a conversation is very suggestive...even for a male Shepard player who had no thoughts of a Jacob romance.  It was definitely...weird.

P.S. I didn't realize Ms. Chee was the primary writer for Leliana.  Much thanks for giving me my all-time favorite romanceable RPG character ever (and one of my favorite characters period).  Though, I have to be honest, Ms. Kempa's voice was also a large contributing factor. :)

I have a question for the writers. Since Hawke has to be a human...Is it because his sister (and Carver is his brother? I haven`t read too much about him) is a companion and important to the story? I mean if Hawke could be elf or dwarf, you would have to make two more versions of his siblings, from scratch right? Behavior, voice action, and whatsnot. I was thinking this might be the reason why Hawke has to be human in this game.

Dragon Age: Origins had a very mature tone to it, dealing with issues such as slavery, rape, murder, genocide, torture, racism, etc. It was a very dark, very gritty, very depressing story and I loved every minute of it. The writers avoided clear-cut right and wrong and opted instead for situations with morally ambiguous solutions.

Wait, you're serious !?

I'm not gonna get into this argument again, but please play The Witcher or read A Song of Ice and Fire to see what dark fantasy is. DAO is high fantasy plain and simple, no darker than LOTR or DnD.

Rape? I know there is one rape in Dragon Age and thats with the city elf origin (at least I assume) but even so The Witcher does a much better job at being a dark mature and WAY more depressing story then Dragon Age. Dragon Age is a great game but it's also ultimately not dark fantasy. The Witcher seriously its on steam for $20 if you can get past the combat then you'll enjoy it a lot and take a look at the Witcher 2 other then Bioware CdProjekt looks like to be the next best Rpg developer to me.

Well how do you engage in a conversation IRL?

I drive the conversation. I correct misconceptions. I talk about myself - reciprocity when another person talks about themselves, which in DA:O is impossible. If someone says something funny, I smile. If they say something sad, I frown. I smirk a lot. I even go so far as to complain about my problems. I walk and talk. Ocassionally, I even act so outrageous as to sit and talk.  I gesture with my hands sometimes. I might pace.

I know I'm weird becuase I don't stand straight as an arrow and only respond out of a set of 3 stock phrases, but I wish you wouldn't make fun of me so.

The Warden is a blank puppet because the Warden does nothing other than stand and emit sentences. The other characters aren't much better, but at least sometimes they smile or gesture.

If half the time I'm looking somewhere else than on the person I'm with, it's because I'm not very interested in what's going on.  Which strangely enough is exactly how I feel when I watch long interactions in The Witcher or Mass Effect.

Do you have an out of body experience when you speak? In DA:O, we don't get a first person view of the person we speak - we see the back of the PC's head and the other talking head. I don't know about you, but I lack the ability to see my own skull when I talk.

But Gaider's point is well taken--there is
room for both.  There are lots of people who like Bethesda's games (ok,
FO:NV is obsidian, but still following the same approach) precisely
because they are sandbox and they are able to develop their character in
complete freedom.  And although I prefer DA:O's balance, and find the
Bethesda games a bit hollow, if I had to jump one way or the other, I'd
choose FO3 over the Witcher, where I'm forced to play a character that I
don't enjoy.

I'm not saying there isn't room - I'm saying I dislike the game. I would choose the Witcher over Fallout, where I am a character instead of a walking stock puppet, but that's just preference.

If Bioware took DA2/DA3/DAwhatever into a direction like Fallout, they would lose my business.

It is more. "My family is dead, we were
betrayed, and I know I have to live on." Revenge, survival, what have
you. And obviously you may get dragged into conflicts surrounding you.
And these kind of stories I enjoy a lot.

The problem with that is that the game tries at every corner to make tell you you're supposed to drop your identity and be a Grey Warden. And I don't mean tells you in the sense that other characters tell you this - I mean there are dialogue options you are forced into or supposed representations of your psyche you see that force you into saying this about yourself.

Yes, that was a pretty amazing moment in ME 2 between Joker and EDI in the drive core. With the tension of the scene, the comedic moment was a difficult one to set up but it came off brilliantly. Sometimes it's hard to work comedy into drama and especially serious scenes.

At the risk of sounding like I am brown-nosing, Lukas seems to of written some pretty awesome characters for Bioware...unless he wrote Aribeth. Goddam, I hate Aribeth still. Posted Image  Then again NWN 1's plot was a train wreck. I still don't get that, mechanically it is an awesome game, but the OC plot was painful. And Bioware has had plenty of great games with great writing.
