On the other hand, if a Swashbuckler/Duellist can't use a rapier, that's a travesty.

Duelists are deadly combatants who prefer to fight in light armour and strike with light, but precise attacks. Experienced duelists have preternatural reflexes that allow them to evade their opponents' clumsy blows, as well as strike with remarkable precision.
Swashbuckler is the name of her version of that fighting style. Her arm doesn't come off because she doesn't get hit.

Anyway, she'll be busy swashing my buckles! Or... should that be buckling my swashes? Hmm...
Lol. Like any Bioware game, you'll have to persuade her. That might be hard to do.
I am curious though. Is it only daggers with her? No swords or shields?

Rogues can't use shields. In melee, they dual wield.

This. One thing I always found weird about duelists in DAO is lack of a rapier. Their icon silhouette was holding an epee, yet there were none of those be found either. Maybe it was to cut down on animation costs. I am doubly surprised Isabela prefers dual daggers and not a longsword/dagger. Longsword in this case replacing the absent rapier. Two daggers is nowhere near as iconic.

Pirates don't tend to carry shields or wear armor because the chances of them ending up swimming unexpectedly are high. I think even a wooden shield would impede one's ability to swim.
As would that vast amount of gold around her neck.
Not to mention in the past most pirates couldn't swim. They thought it was tempting fate.
Anyways she doesn't use shields or armor because she probably just dislikes them.

Doesn't wood float? Seems handy if you should find yourself overboard unexpectedly.

I don't know, but Errol Cousland didn't:

But a shield usually has a fair amount of iron / steel / starmetal / whatever on it.

She's a swashbuckler, is she still a duelist, since we learned that from her in Origins? (If it's already been said somewhere, I missed it, sorry to ask again.)
Swashbuckler is the name of the style of duelist fighting unique to her, mixing her piratey abilities into the specialization.

I would say illustrating the feel of the skills is better then sticking literal to the original style of fighting. Ask someone (who doesn't know the history of fighting styles) what a swashbuckler is and you can bet they would describe a charismatic pirate, a musketeer, etc. The loud, cheerful, boasting fighter. Think about how we even talk about "a swashbuckling tale" and such, it isn't because the protagonist uses a sword and buckler but the feel of the story.Aermas wrote...
So there is no other reason other than because the title Swashbuckler brings to mind the idea of a dex fighter & not because this is an accurate description of her abilities?

Actually it was very common during the age of pirates, that most navy men and pirates could not swim. Swimming was not a common recreational activity and a large percentage of adults couldn't swim Seems like every historical account I have read about that era, those crazy sea men comment constantly about the fact that they cannot swim.
As for a shield, err just throw it away when you start sinking:) or if you can't swim, maybe a wooden buckler would be a flotation device!
I also hoped for a buckler, but I understand it is about animation time and costs, no biggie.

Any hope of getting a serious answer from anyone?
Sorry, we kinda went crazy there with bad jokes.
If it were up to me, I certainly would like the option of equiping her with shields, short swords, etc..
