You can unlock the spec in Awakening by buying a tome (it will be unlocked for Origins too), regardless of which class you're playing.

 sweeet. . .thanks for the tip. I was having a tough time RPing myself into making that Blood Mage deal.

Yeah, I've never made the deal either. What I did was that after having the spec unlocked, I RPed that Avernus taught my mage Blood Magic after she spared him.

Haha. . .I'm not sure I'd ever make my own Mage a Blood Mage but I sure would give that spec to Morrigan. Arcane Warrior is wasted on her and I only made her a Spirit Healer last time because I lost Wynne from defiling the Ashes and I needed someone to learn Revival.

Although my mage's RP on blood magic has always been use it as a last resort or oh crap spell to turn the tide of a battle. He isn't out looking to sacrifice people or summon demons just likes to have a backup plan in case things get a little out of hand. I consider him actually a neutral good type of character.

Yeah I RP that I learn it on my own. I mean if Jowan can teach it to himself with books from the Circle why couldn't our warden who is #1badass in Fereldon learn from his/her travels.

The Blood spell that you learn from Avernus's research is a self-inflicted-wound spell only, which was why my Mage felt okay using it. She wouldn't have learned anything that would have needed an external source.

So basically I got Blood Wound in my bag of tricks in case things get a bit out of control.

RP-wise, I had my mage learn it after the Circle and 'seeing' how blood magic behaved as opposed to regular magic. She learned Spirit Healer much the same way.

Did use Blood Sacrifice, but only on, um, well, Dog.
That's worse!!
My blood mage wasn't picky about who was in the party when she used it. Since she was only using her blood or making the enemies blood boil, she couldn't care less if anyone would be offended.
It would've been nice if being a blood mage had been properly acknowledged by your companions (like Wynne in the Tower).
