Last night I resolved a huge issue I was experiencing for many months and could not figure out a solution to until now…

There is a common error players have been experiencing not only on my server, but it appears some others are experiencing it as well.  The problem is when a player creates a fresh character on a server vault server and they get rejected with a message, something along the lines of: "Local Vault Characters Not Allowed".  Another symptom I've noticed is that if you view your characters that are already created on the server vault, you cannot view their stats. All you can see is their names in the list.

This had been troubling me for quite sometime (And I'm sure others) until it suddenly occurred to me that what if it
is Ccleaner?  Ccleaner is a cache cleanup app for maintaining general PC health in regards to temp files,
Internet cache and registry entry fixing.  So what if it is somehow wiping part of the connection to the server
vault from the NWN2 server when I run its cleanup procedures?

So last night I tested my theory and it was indeed Ccleaner.

To confirm this is the case perhaps others can try this with Ccleaner or any other Cache cleanup software?

*Launch your server (Server vault
only).

*Connect to it and create a new character.

*Log out.

*Run Ccleaner (Or similar software) and run its cleanup functions.

*Log back in and see if you can see your characters stats from the choose menu. They should display nothing on the right when you select their names.

*Try to create a new character.  You should get rejected with the error message.

*Restart the server and try again.

It's probably removing some of the directories under %temp%\\nwn2. Restarting the server will cause them to be recreated.

The absence of these directories will cause character creation to fail in this way (and will also cause character export to fail).

Hi, everyone

Finally drcided to try NWN2. Played a lot of NWN some time ago.

Just got a quick question I haven't been able to find an answer to.

What happens to a PC when you export it? I can choose an exported PC when starting a new game but its not in the localvault folder inside the game files. How is a person supposed to send someone a character?

double_aa, your question isn't directly relevant to this topic, but I'll give you a quick answer anyway. When you say "the localvault folder inside the game files" I assume you mean your installation files (something like program files/atari/nwn2). Pretty much nothing you do will affect those files, and you shouldn't mess with them.

Instead, everything that you should modify, where you saves will be, your local vault will be, etc. is My Documents/NWN2.

This sounds like it might have something to do with a problem I am having. I can't create any new characters. I am running a PW server from my pc so I have things set up there for the auto-downloader (user file and all). At some point in time I stopped being able to create new characters. It might have been around the auto-downloader set up time.

Any other pointers on what to check for? also is there a better description on where I would find the temp file mentioned?

Oh I should also say that it locks up right after you select your deity in the character creator. This happens no matter how I start the game, multi or single player.

Quilistan, your problem sounds a bit different. Do you use a cache cleanup app? Does the problem go away when you restart the game/server? Have you tried reinstalling the game?

I used NO cleanup app. Just had to do a reinstall after a patch failed on me. After reinstall I was able to create a few characters, but at some point lost the ability to create them. The only thing i can think of that was a big change was when I had to set up my computer to be able to host a PW using the auto-downloader, and the toolset.

Skywingvl's post just made me think it might be something similar. Any suggestions are welcome.

Oh and my problem doesn't go away.

This is probably a silly question, just a thought, but you don't use the same computer to host your PW, build and play on all at the same time do you? When using the auto-downloader it's certainly not advised to even use the same NWN2 my docs directory on the client PC to play on the PW and build with either.

I have 2 separate directories, which I switch/rename, depending on whether I am playing/building. The auto-downloader synchronises the folders, so bad things can happen including loss of new or conflicting content.

Again just a thought.

There is a way to set it up so you can, There was an old thread concerning that on the old forums. I can't remember everything I had to do, but I have to start the game a different way from a Users\\NWN2 directory. I can't remember if there was anything else special about setting that up.

All of it was to make sure the auto-downloader didn't sync the wrong stuff.

But yes I do Host/build/Play on the same machine.

There is a way to set it up so they don't share the same directory and I think it involved special shortcuts, but it never worked for me so I keep separate folders and rename them to hide/reveal them from the game.

I'm not really an expert on the functionality of it all, but I believe that if you host/build/play on the same machine and don't have it set up to use separate directories and separate CPU cores dedicated to each instance of the game, then that might be the cause of the problem.

I'd imagine there would be some serious conflicts there. If you are running a dedicated server and launching the game again to play and connect to itself there could be some really bad mojo going on in regards to the server instance trying to use temp files at the same time as your client instance… not to mention some serious amount of memory and CPU usage.

Personally I would not like to attempt what you are doing. I use a separate PC dedicated to hosting the server and like I say on another PC I have different folders for playing and building with. It's risk free, stable and smooth.

I have built/played/hosted on the same machine since the release of NWN1 and NWN2 with NO issues (at least until the auto-downloader, but I am not even certain on that). I keep my machine in good order and relatively high end compared to NWN's requirements. Balarand is a VERY longtime running server.

My players have no complaints, and there are very few if any crashes. We occasionally have a crash if I let the server run longer than 3 days without a reset, but I have heard this from others also. I generally try to reset every 48 hours.

My character creator doesn't work even if I try and run the game NORMALLY for a single player game without the server running.

This thread just sparked my interest because of my character creation issue, and it gave me an avenue to think about for problem solving. I was hoping to get some more info about it. Skywingvl seemed to know something. I play my created characters easily with NO issues.

The temp folders that Skywingvl mentioned can be found here:

C:\\Documents and Settings\\(Insert user name here)\\Local Settings\\Temp\\NWN2

You may need to enable hidden folders and files to find them.

Skywingvl also said that they would be recreated if you restart the game/server, which is true for the problem reported in this topic, but obviously not in your case.

The reason why I am being cautious about the whole idea of hosting and playing at the same time on the same single PC, is that both instances of the game, server and client will use that temp directory. I am not sure whether they will create their own separate folders or argue over the same folders leading to errors.

I'd look in there and see what there is. There might be some corrupt files preventing you from creating a new character. If there is no game running the folders should be empty. Games and toolset crashes, however tend to leave unwanted files in there. I'd delete the whole lot and see what happens. Failing that I would uninstall the game, make sure everything is clean and then reinstall the game with a fresh start. Might be an idea not to restore any old ini files first either and see what the default and fresh ini files do. I'd also leave setting up the ADL until last when you're sure the character creator is working again.

We've had this same problem intermittently for months on end. I use the target shortcut systme so that my working and pw playing folders are different. Still, the temp folders might be the same as this thread suggests. It's completely random though, and isn't linked to my doing work or restarting or logging on, etc. It also seems to only happen with newer players. And generally a new stage or server reset will take care of it. I'd recommend a server reset as the first step. This has certainly been a problem that has plagued us though.

Also - we host on a separate computer, so that isn't the issue. I do play on the same comp i develope though.
