Amnesia: The Dark Descent just reminded me of something I find terrifying on oh so many levels.

Iron Maidens.

I just get reminded of this  whenever I think of them so cant take them seriously any more.  Even though its a horrible way to go.

I think death and the ways of death are a recurring theme in this thread.   Agony/pain/torture will almost certainly be top of the list.

What's scary about Iron Maidens?

Heights; leeches (!!!!!); ticks; mosquitos; dark forests; swimming when I don't see the bottom of the water; walking alone in the streets when it's dark outside... :D

Oh, and those creepy dolls without eyes!!!

darkness, and i dont mean the at night darkness kind when you can still see something. i mean the kind of darkness when you cant see your hand when its not even a centimeter from your face.

The funny thing is that I used to be scared of darkness, back when I was younger and believed in the supernatural - ghosts and such. Then one day I no longer felt any fear at all at darkness - that's when I realized that I REALLY did not consided the supernatural remotely plausible anymore.

Now the things I fear tend to be real-life things - electrical fires, burglars... things that might realistically threaten you or your loved ones. Oh, and when religious extremism, of any variety, is mixed with politics, that scares the crap out of me.

seeing things that aren't really there.. O_o

For example tonight.. Our power was out and therefore the front gate wouldn't open. And in Sunny South Africa, most of us have fortified our homes(the people I live with are paranoid) with electric fencing and what not. So I sat outside and waited for someone to come open for me. Can't climb over the gate, it's too high.

I saw this creepy looking character on the opposite side of the road that reminded me of a suicidal emo kid friend I had back in high school. It scared the sh*t out of me. I felt this vibe of utter terror wash over me, so I drove off.

Turns out it was just some stupid sign board in a shadow :D

Small enclosed spaces. You know, ye olde claustrophobia, though only a minor case.

Facehuggers. Seriously.
The adult xenomorphs, while neat, don't particularly scare me, but those small, spidery bastards...*twitches*

Clowns. Even more so, zombie clowns.

Also...

its not the supernatural that scares me, its the fact that i cant see where i'm going. like, i could take one wrong step and break my leg or something.

I'm the opposite.  The xenos make me shiver. With they're quivering drooling faces and double mouth power ... ugh.
But how I love them.

**And in terms of movies, John Carpenter's The Thing. The sound it makes ... it just, I can't do it. Ever. Probably the only horror movie I can't watch by myself *even then I hide*.
If I hear something that remotely reminds me of that sound I freak out.

In all honesty...heights. We had a Big Joe at work (basically a riding fork lift) that I was EXTREMELY afraid of. It doesn't go much more than about 20 feet off the ground, but I used to freak out on that thing.

Now, I can use it with ease. We have another guy in the warehouse that's afraid to use the thing and always gets other people to do it...kind of amazed we keep him on. It's not particularly unsafe...you're much more likely to get seriously injured from the trash compactor or cardboard bailer, so I manned up and got used to it.

I'm not afraid of flying though...at all. I can sit next to the window and stare out through the whole plane ride and not get the least bit frightened. Have me look over the railing in a 2 story mall though...yikes!

Ha, yeah, actually to think about it, I've always feared death by fire. Perhaps this is more pervasive through experience, but I've always found it a horrid passing.

I always comfort myself from the thought saying; "don't worry, you'll pass out due to shock before the real pain hits".
