Why?

The setting has rules.  Do you think the characters who live in that setting are unaware of them, despite living there every day for their entire lives?

I'll skip the middle of this debate.  It's going to end with I enjoy being consciously aware that I'm playing a game and you don't like games.

The result of my approach is that I'm making active distinctions about what parts of the game are the game and what parts of the game are in character.   Many of my conclusions are entirely subjective and I draw lines in places where I don't expect everyone else does.

Still, figured I'd ask.

I'm with Sylvius on this one. Quick switch weapon was something I used a lot, esp with arcane warrior. As far as I'm concerned, doesn't matter if it is unlikely you'd carry around an extra 2H sword, it's something that makes sense in RPGs.

I have to say, I like these screenshots. (And I'm PC all the way - well since the Coleco-vision.) Interface seems intuitive.

So you think those 2 shaded out talents on the right there will have upgrades? And what are the blue and the red icons on the left?

Taking a page from Sylvius' signature, as long as there is (in my view) a conflict between what makes sense for my character and what makes sense in RPGs I will view that as a mistake.

In single player games that almost always means I'm going with what makes sense for my character.
In multiplayer games that almost always means I'm going with what makes sense in the RPG.

Pretty sure those are unlocks as the result of Friendly/Rivalry paths.

In DAO, the rules allow instantaneous swapping between weapon sets.  That's how the world works.  Why do you think this isn't true?

Heh... this is very interesting. Here you and I are in complete opposition but with the same result. We both like to immerse ourselves in the world and dislike being woken up from that. But the thing you imply here would absolutely ruin my immersion. To think that their world works exactly like the game presents it and not like the real world (except where I excuse it)... I couldn't stand that other than for humour. I'd never be able to immerse myself.

Not that your view is wrong, not at all. If it is what you enjoy then it's right for you.

The debate on whether mechanics are visible in-world or not is something I have seen with P&P games as well. Especially when it comes to stuff like action points, narrative control, etc. I am also on the side of the game mechanics being divorced from the world. The game mechanics are tools for us to interact with the game world not the actual physics of the world. It is for me like say a book the characters don't know they are just imaginations of a author put to word but that is how I interact with the world/characters is through the reading.

Neither are wrong approaches, just different ones.

What's your roleplaying justification for having a character have a spare two handed sword that he just keeps around for occasionally bashing people in the face with only to switch back to his primary weapons?

Since i'd do very much the same thing with my HN (although she'd alternate between 2h and dual-wield rather that 2h and sword+shield, and the 2h was useful for more than just pommel strike) my justification was she'd actually carry these weapons together (as implied by ability to have 2 separate weapon setups you could switch between with single click)  That these weapons weren't both drawn on the character simultaneously was something i chalked up to technical limitation of the game.

For me, it works like a thought experiment.  In athought experiment you explicitly accept a set of rules and then see where those rules lead.  This is also how I play RPGs, where those rules aren't just the rules of the setting but also the personality of my character.
