This year, GameInformer has decided to do a list of the Top 30 Characters Who Defined A Decade. They are releasing three different covers, each with groups of characters depicted. The article is here, and this is the full cover:

Commander Shepard and TIM can be seen among them:

As well as many other characters, including Teyrn Loghain of Dragon Age: Origins.

And HK-47 from Knights of the Old Republic:

There are all sorts of references and in-jokes all over the piece ("Would you kindly?"), and it's definitely worth a look. I'd say that the covers themselves are reflecting iconic characters from great games, but not necessarily who they'll pick (Shepard will be totally on there, though).

Does anyone want to play the spot-the-references and characters game?

I see Layton and Nick in the walls. As well as the King of Katamari Damacy (don't remember his name now...).
It's a nice cover, indeed. I like to see Loghain there, I'd have preferred Morrigan, though. I'm missing Marcus Fenix...and also Albert Wesker (or some RE character). They should be there, in my opinion...I mean, John Marston of RDR and the one from Heavy Rain are there, and their games are relatively new...by that logic, Alan Wake should be there too :P

Illusive man's Balloon is win.

I also noticed Chief has a plasma grenade and GLaDOS a cake lol. HK-47 is pretty hard to find in there though. He's the new Waldo.
Also, who's that fine lady on the far left? Never seen her before.

Man, I really want that poster when they start selling it, and I really hope they ship it outside the U.S.

There were 3 characters that I could not identify
+The lady to the far left next to the Heavy Rain dude
+The guy in the fisheman's hat.
+The guy in the medieval armor (Loghain? really? it looks like 'generic fantasy guy' there).

Fisherman's hat guy is Captain Price from Call of Duty 4. He was also in MW2 but we don't like to talk about that here.

Well, they're specific people--none of them are generic "armor guys" or anything, and that's definitely the River Dane armor. I'm pretty sure that's Loghain...the green-haired chick looks familiar, but I can't place her.

Yeah upon closer inspection the armor is pretty distinctive, shame on me for not getting it at first glance =(
Nobody seems to know for sure, but the girl has been indentified as KOS-Mos from Xenosaga (but that character has blue hair, not green, and is hardly influential if you ask me).
Well assuming that's true then, from left to right (I don't know the names of everyone but I do know what games they're from).
  • Wander from Shadow of The Colossus.
  • KOS-MOS from Xenosaga (not 100% sure).
  • Ethan Mars from Heavy Rain.
  • The Illusive Man, Mass Effect 2.
  • (portrait) Professor Layton, from the game of the same name.
  • Master Chief, Halo.
  • (portrait) Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney.
  • Commander Shepard,  Mass Effect 1 & 2.
  • Alyx Vance, Half Life 2.
  • Raz, Psychonauts.
  • GladOS, Portal.
  • Andrew Ryan from Bioshock.
  • Samus Aran, Metroid. The Boss from MGS3.
  • Tim from Braid.
  • Nathan Drake and Elena, Uncharted 1 & 2.
  • Ezzio Auditore da Firenze, Assasin's Creed 2.
  • (portrait) King of All Cosmos, Katamari Damacy.
  • (somewhat hidden) HK-47, Knights of the Old Republic.
  • John Marston and Bonnie McFarland from Red Dead Redemption.
  • Jimmy Hopkins from Bully.
  • Captain Price , Call of Duty 4.
  • Kaim from Lost Odyssey.
  • Loghain from Dragon Age Origins.
  • Kratos, God of War.
  • Tommy Vercetti from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
  • Niko Bellic, Grand Theft Auto IV.
  • Auron, Final Fantasy X.
  • Jade, Beyond Good & Evil.
Feel free to correct me if needed.
Really cool that Bioware and Mass Effect got recognition.

/compares pictures

Oh yeah, that's totally her, then. I guess someone complained there weren't enough girls on the cover, probobly, and there are very few women that "represent" games.

Personally, I'm glad they didn't go the nostalgic route and put Link or Mario on it. They don't have characters.

Aaaand...

One of the 4 main guys from Heavy Rain.

Ethan Mars.

The bad guy from Bioshock.

Andrew Ryan, and he's here to ask you a question.

Protagonist of Braid.

Tim. Probably short for "Time" because the game is deep like that.

Ezio, Assasin's Creed 2.

You missed his rad whole name Ezio Auditore de Firenze! No, seriously, it's an awesome name.

Main character from Bully.

The name's Jimmy Hopkins, losers! Actually, I can't even remember if he ever said that. He once announced himself.

Lead guy from Lost Odyssey.

Kaim. I essentially remember this game for crapping out on me at the second disc, and terrible character design.

Lead char. from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Tommy Vercetti. Never played the game, so I can't quote anything...

I'm not really correcting you so much as clarifying for science! You were actually able to name many I was not.

Whoa, that Kos-Mos threw me off, I guess she could vaguely be considered influencial? Always nice to see Xenosaga getting mentioned, it was so underrated.

Neat cover, I barely recognise anyone but I love the style in which it is done.

Completly right my friend. For some reason my brain defaults blonde in skintight outfit as Samus, I failed to notice the knife (plus the drawing doesn't show The Boss mature age).

Thanks! I didn't really play all those games, but I am a magnet for useless videogame trivia. I wish that skill worked for me in my student days.

So that IS Loghain? I recognized most of the people on that list, and I wasn't quite sure it was Loghain, hair and armor isn't quite the same.

All right then, Psychonauts and Beyond Good and Evil were flops.
Heavy Rain...is relatively new, it hasn't "inspired" many clones, like Halo or GTA. Even God of War has a lot of clones (Hello, Dante's Inferno and Castlevania Lords of Shadow).
And...Bully? Braid? Lost Odyssey?
Would you say those games were influential? I'm not saying they were bad games.

I'd say Resident Evil 4 and Gears of War were far more influential than many of those. The "over-the-shoulder" camera in survival horrors and shooters was popularized by those games, in my humble opinion.

Damn, my English is getting rusty.

I think they were going for unique and interesting characters, not necessarily just the most influential ones (for instance, I can see why Kratos would be here, but I'd hardly call him a well-written or deep character; Teyrn Loghain is probably one of the deepest characters BioWare has done, but I doubt has influenced anything).

Keep in mind, it's influential characters, not games--the article clarifies that not all characters on the list are ones that come from good or popular games.

Man, this thread is sooo getting closed, but...

All right then, Psychonauts and Beyond Good and Evil were flops.

They were also highly acclaimed by critics, and reached 'cult' status, now that I think about it Okami should have been in there too.

Heavy Rain...is relatively new, it hasn't "inspired" many clones, like
Halo or GTA. Even God of War has a lot of clones (Hello, Dante's Inferno
and Castlevania Lords of Shadow).

Heavy Rain is probably there for its relative... uniqueness I guess... much more iconic that Farenheit anyway. Oh and Castlevania LoS is awesome.

Braid?

Braid deserves the spot, is "the little game that made it". Opened the way for other indie/downloadables.

I'd say Resident Evil 4 and Gears of War were far more influential than many of those.

100% agree on that.

I'm pretty sure. The armor is pretty distinctive, if missing certain details. It's rather intricate, so I see why. Ezio's outfit isn't as detailed, either, nor is The Boss'. And Shepard's N7 armor, too.

That list is missing Dante from Devil May Cry in my opinion; he's a popular character spanning four games throughout the decade.

I definitely love seeing Marston in there; I still get weepy listening to Dead Man's Gun.

Ethan Mars deserves points for being impervious to glass.
