Is that they're digital copies. A tautology I know, but it's true (and there is another tautology!). If we pre-purchase a Bioware game such as Dragon Age II on a service such as Steam, ought'nt there be a way to upgrade it to say... the ultimate edition later on by simply paying an upgrade fee rather than the entire price all over again and allowing the rest of the content to download to the existing install?

You can buy Dragon Age from Steam and pay & download the DLC individually from bioware.com already, so  a mechanism similar to this is already in place. Where is the "upgrade to ultimate" button? Could this theoretical feature be integrated directly into digital services such as Steam? This would be convenient as the user does not have to track a bunch of other files, and could simply reinstall the ultimate version from Steam or such if necessary while still pre-ordering or ordering the regular copies beforehand.
