They're trying to increase the appeal to a wider range. Like someone else said Flash AND substance. The fact that it includes more flash does not mean the story and character interactions won't be as good as DAO.ElvaliaRavenHart wrote...
Since I'm an adult and I've already invested alot of money into a game that I love, I sure as heck don't want to see it change direction and become targeted to a less mature/age group. Defeats the purpose of buying and playing a M rated game targeted to adults.

I just saw the new gameplay.
Gods... those poses. Mage is using staff and running like some kind of anime hero.
It looks almost as terrible as this:
My childhood.
You have killed it.

It doesn't mean they will be, either.Morroian wrote...

Yeah that seems to be series of different animations for the basic mage attacks. Didn't really bug me, they look smooth overall and more active than what DAO had... at least no one can argue now mages can wind up pretty buff if they have to to twirl sticks like that all dayashwind wrote...
I am under the impression the mage was using regular attack until the very end when she stun, arcane prison, fireball the ogre. If I am right, her regular attacks looks like a mad person swing a stick madly to produce arcane bolt... while DAO's "pew pew" is uncool, what I have just seen is... .. . indescribably retarded.
The twirling on the run on the other hand was kinda silly, like cheerleader with ADD, but maybe that was just regular attack animation firing occasionally when the game would get confused and think there's a target in view.
Well, smooth animation, yes - flamboyant even. But... a mage doing all that just to hurl some arcane bolts is... I think the developers are over reacting to "combat was too slow" and over doing them... to greater than needed extend.
Dev: "Slow? Uncool? I will show you what I can do! I can make mages run as fast as rogues (and at least 2x faster than an ogre) while still have time to twirl sticks."
While seemingly having a neuroses about twirling the stave whilst running, the way Bethany holds it is not incorrect, silly, or 'off'. That is how you would generally hold that type of weapon while running, and the attack animations are actually 'attacks' one would use were that a spear, short glaive, or any other sort of finesse polearm.
In almost every fantasy world or setting that I can think of, there exist a type of mage that learns to utilize some of his spells through physical action. For example, in the Wheel of Time series, most Aes Sedai (mages) learned to cast a fireball by actually making a throwing motion with their hand as if they were throwing a ball of fire with that hand.
I can think of, off the top of my head, several other examples of this from Tolkienn to Salvadore to Brent Weeks, from D&D to Warcraft (etc).
Using a staff like you would use a staff to unleash your latent magical abilities is not far fetched or out of place - it's probably the better way to do it. Under the canon of the referencef authors/settings, not using such methods to learn/use abilities is rare and more taxing on the mental capacity of the user.
I know this is comming in late in the thread, but I felt that I should say that.

The mage attacks look fantastic, frankly. If they'd been like that in DA:O, I wouldn't have needed to bother with the arcane warrior.
And I absolutely love the warrior combat, I hated combat in DA:O but loved everything else.
Good news for me, now if they only had the game up on Steam for preorder I would be set.

Why would you hold it like that? It requires the arm to be raised and kept straight away from the body and that requires active effort, which seems like pointless strain where alternative is to carry it pointed forward and ready to fire whenever you need it, without having to "bring it to bear" first.WuWeiWu wrote...

Quite like they used to carry it in DAO in fact, i don't recall complaints about it being held wrong there.

The fight in the gameplay vid makes me think of a gameplay video I saw of Diablo III actually. Running back an forth, clicking like mad to cast as many spells as possible before the monsters gets too close to you. Maybe its just me though.
I agree with you, that was my very first thought after just seeing it too

Kotaku posted an article about the video. Reactions to it aren't very good (and I see their points).

Of course, you have to keep in mind that everybody in the party was dead, except Bethany and I don't think she had ressurect. Damn, I don't think she had Cure (when the party was revived the player didn't cured anyone). I think that in this situation, run away and keep shooting spells is a natural response if you don't have any poultices and the only survivor is a fragile mage fighting with a Ogre and some Hurlocks.

Note the highly tactical combat.
If I play early levels of DA:O, on a easier level, it won't look tactical either.
