It's because of how the wheel arranges it.
In DA:O, you'd get all the options listed and there'd be no indication of whether or not you were asking for clarification or advancing the conversation.
In Mass Effect and with the dialog wheel, you select Investigate and it opens up additional options.

Nope, didn't care. XP from kills only conjures up one word in my mind: Grinding. A concept that should die a horrible death. As long as I can get XP from something and spend it in varied and creative ways, I'm glad it's not coming from simply butchering X number of enemies.
