I think Dog is actually quite a lot of fun and very powerful at high level.  Dog can also find some interesting things for you ;-)

So this is what I would do.

Dog:  Great at taking out mages, is very fast, can stun with its howl.
Morrigan:  You can't beat her DPS; her storm spells can wipe an entire room if stacked.
Rogue:  Either one will do, as long as you max out their archery skills, lock picking, and invisibility if possible.  The ranger pet is also very useful.
Tank:  Play one.  Either a two-hander specialist, or a one-hander and shield.  It doesn't matter.  The shield is helpful early, but the two-hander does massive damage later.

You won't have a healer so you'll have to one of you characters to make all your potions for you, but with massive DPS you'll need far less healing anyway.

I found out why people recommended me to bring Whynne + Ali back to Ostagar; that was priceless ! Bit disappointed by the quest though as it basically reuse 70% of previous content = hope soldier's peak gonna be a bit more new

For a two-handed PC, I'd recommend a party of Alistair (DEX tank), Wynne (healer) and Leliana/Zevran in your case I guess, archery. The archer and mage can crowd-control, and while alistair tanks you pummel away with your 2H PC. That's how I played my 2H play-through.

Sort of the same...

+ PC 2h templar / champion which I use for CC - I obviously have put a bit point in willpower so I can CC alot.

+++ Running Indomitable, powerful blows and precise strike continuously (plan to add the champion stuff as well)

+++ Currently level 15 at 92% spell resist (only 2 slots on Ysaris) weilding Ysaris

+++ Mixed equipment made of Blood dragon armor, commander plate, helm of harrogath, key to the city, lifegiver, spellward (need to go back to buy the last belt, just got enough money after releasing Asunder)

+++ Over 25 in willpower / con / Dex (mostly due to circle mage bonus and equipment) and over 50 in Force. All the remaining points will go in Force. Just started "poison" after coercion and battle

+++ Using mainly 2H sweep, critical strike, pommel strike, sunder armor, depending on the ennemies.

+ Morrigan as support, metamorph and arcane warrior (just reached level 14)

+++ more willpower than magic

+++ constantly running frozen weapons and haste

+++ only tactics based on regenerating stamina of PC or healing the party - she won't get group heal or lifeward as these are draining mana big way. From 14 to 22 I will try to unlock mass paralysis and some other wards -

+++ I only switch to her for rare and ad hoc casts of mindblasts when too many surround her but never really happen otherwise, for doing potions

+++ Just got arcane warrior spec - still hesitating on what armor to give her as stuff - probably will go with the biggest set of armor I find.

+ Alistair

+++ running both threaten and shield something constantly.

+++ level 13 I think will need to go champion too for group bonus to attack / defense

+++ armor mismatched of blood dragon / unupgraded cailan / maric sword

+++ I only switch to him for a ad-hoc stun when main is overpowered / grabbed

+ Zevran

+++ only use him to unlock chests really otherwise he runs around dying, I don't really pay attention to what he does and I only heal his injuries when he cannot open chest anymore.

+++ gets whatever equipment I find - think he has The edge and Duncan's dagger currently, no idea what he has as armor.

+++ relationship management with him was delicate - when I finally managed to bring him to +20 approval he decided that we were lovers and I had to loose back the 20 of approval by telling him to f... off - this gets so annoying with this game.

All going smoothly so far. Currently finishing dealing off with branca then off to soldier's peak.

RE relationships, use gifts :P

Your party composition seems similar to mine, although I think the rogue would be more useful to you as an archer. Are there re-rolling options in the OC like the books in Awakening? I can't recall...

.

Put Dex on Zevran. Backstab everyone your tank is fighting against. And also make him to protect Morrigan. At first it is occasionally a bit difficult with him but once the game progresses he becomes so brilliant that he hardly ever takes any hit at all.  In the end he is practically like a total fighter. Also I usually give him Helm of Honnleath to push up his stats. Carry him along. You notice that the dying will stop :P

I generally make him wield one sword and one dagger and in the end two swords - because.. well. just because.

So many spell resistence makes the gameplay completely boring(and is unnessary anyway),but its your choice.

Hey, it is my first attempt at Nightmare difficulty, jumping from normal, didn't want to go all out straight away like no companion, no armor. But I agree, it must be like playing an arcane warrior or using Shale - unbalancing the game big time.

Also a game like DAO has so many unbalanced features that it would take too long to build house rules for it.

So Branka is alive and forging golems for Belen, the soldier's peak has been cleansed and my armors and stuff finally upgraded ! Most of the side quest are done, remains the Ash Urn village and temple, Flemeth and the elven part.

Soldier's peak was more enjoyable than rto, although still a bit short, it was graphically worth it.

Alright, now level 19 with only the whole elf chapter to do and the high dragon to slay (tried at level 17 but was a bit too early it seems, although flemeth wasn't).

I am wondering: I have now filled in the 2H talent group and the warrior talent group and the champion talent group. Where should I put my talents from now on ? Templar ? Or archery (although I perfectly know I will never switch to a crossbow...) or keep them for new talents in awakening ?

Any suggestion ?

Templar is a good selection for anti-Mage selections, including a ranged Stun/AoE talent. But use the Talents somewhere, as you may respec in Awakenings.

Beserker helps you hit a tonne harder. Good for damage warrior like yourself. Templar's talent's are fairly so-so until you get to Holy Smite, which rocks. Good for dealing with mages. Reaver is actually fairly weak. Hardly ever worth it. Whichever of the first two takes your fancy.

Reaver, I've been given to understand, is excellent in a solo run though. Party of a party though? Not so much. Templar is a pretty good anti-magic/anti-demon set, though I almost never found a combat use for the second talent since I use magic enhancements a lot. The rest are very useful.

After that, I'd say just toss them into another tree until you get to Awakening and can apply them to the new 2-handed talents and the new specialization.

Yop;

A quick update, on where I am at - been pretty silent due to a business trip abroad but back and kicking.

So game has been finished (level 23.6 only :'( I was aiming for 24) with Morrigan, Stern and Alistair. Decided to marry Ali to Anora and let Morrigan do her ritual. A more satisfying end than the self sacrifice (1st playthrough) or Loghain heroism (2nd playthrough).

The party members were in the end irrelevant because even in nightmare, my 2h 100% spell resist monster didn't need any help and I even "let behind" (as in let at the entrance of the level) the 3 companions to carve my way through without a sweat.

I moved then to awakening where the slaughter continues. The new 2h skills are clealry overpowered (not mentionning massacre) and no one stay long enough on its feet to hit me. Just currently finished the blackmarsh part and am going to wending woods next.

Had good fun with Anders, Oghren and Nathaniel's banter so far but they are running short of jokes so I may as well replace them as I get new companions.

As a side note, so far Awakening is the best bioware title I have been given to play since BG2. I'm really enjoying it fully. So far away from the typical Origins / NwN quest system which basically was: "there are 4 main regions to visit, 4 thief to arrest, 4 letters to deliver, 4 widows to create, 4 magical sites to activate, 4 princess to rescue, 4 I don't know what... each of course in one region... as if it was not obvious enough" making it all repetitive and boring.

They didn't get rid of the quest boards though, the worst invention imo since the creation of RPG.

I can't really see how the Awakening structure is any different than the typical Bioware "4 main regions to visit" structure. Awakening works basically like a shorter version of Origins where you still have to visit 4 main regions in order to recruit your allies.

I suppose it must be easy for anyone to see the connection between Amaranthine and Denerim, Blackmarsh and the Fade, Wending Woods and Brecilian Forest, Kal'Hirol and Orzammar, as well as the connection between their respective questlines.

I am speaking of side quests mostly. At least, you don't get a list of 4 of 5 quests which require you to do the exact same thing in each region.

What is a killer for the game feeling is to meet the first NPC who says :

"Oh oh I need you to bring me back 4 magical radish. Some have been spotted in Blackmarsh, the woods, Kal HIrol and Amaranthine, you should have a look there."

And then the 2nd npc you meet says:

"I need you to deliver a letter to X in Blackmarsh, Y in the woods, Z in Kal Hirol and T in Amaranthine"...

And a 3rd npc telling you:

"Some chaps have stolen the supplies of the guild, one is hiding in ..., 2nd in ... etc..."

And a 4th chap to the letter to the widow, a 5th for the hooded courier, a 6th for the letter of termination, a 7th for the magical sites, a 8th for the notice of recruitment,

And when most are given through a board, it's total fun... Why not creating a shopping list instead of a quest journal next time ?

Reaver is underrated. Freightening Appereance even works on Oger Bosses. Nothing is more fun then an oger who covers in fear from you anyway.

I haven't seen Kal Hirol yet but the Blackmarsh look to me widely different to the Mage tower and the Wending woods do not seem much like Brecilian.

Don't think it was meant to be an exact comparison. But there are several similarities.

Blackmarsh sends you into the Fade like the Tower. Following leaving the Fade you fight a Pride Demon.

Kal'Hirol is less like 'Orzammar' and more like the Deep Roads/Dead Trenches. Ruined dwarven thiage with lots of darkspawn and broodmother(s) at the end.

Wending Woods, however, only vaguely compares to the Brecelion Forest. Both have (a) Dalish Keeper you fight. Both have underground ruins.

As Liliandra said it was not meant to be an exact comparison but the similarities do exist. However, regardless of any differences or similarities, the fact remains that the typical Bioware structure where you have to visit 4 main areas in order to recruit your allies is still present in Awakening.
