Sorry for missing your point on the controllers.  I agree that  for demoing console controllers are easier to work with but easier doesn't always mean better.  At any rate, it can and has been done with the PC.

I assumed the "PC gamers like me" was inherrent.  So for all those PC gamers out there who don't agree with what I've written, you have my apology.

As for the Witcher, I never said it was less action-oriented than what we know of DA 2.  My reference to CDProjekt was due to their regard for PC gaming and no other reason.

Yes the Witcher was an action RPG, but the story did not suffer so in its case I think the action was equal to but did not have more focus than the story, which I found to be imaginative and immersing.  Hey, it sold over 1.5 million copies on the PC alone so they must be doing something right.

If EA can follow the same path of success (combining action with quality story) in DA 2 while improving consoles and not having the PC side suffer then you can count me in as a giant fan.

See, now I feel like a b1tch. You should have been mean back, and then I'd be okay with it.

Sorry for overreacting.

And debating the very nature of RPG is a circular argument with no end. :D

I think it'd be worth having a decent crack, given that many (and almost all of the reasonable) of peoples concerns are based on it.

We argue this point at least twice a week. Not recently, because mods have been specifically telling us to stop derailing threads, but it never gets anywhere.

For one, I'm happy there are companies out there like CDProjekt who not only respect the genre of RPG but also respect the people who play them on PC.

They had every intention to bring TW2 to consoles, but it may never happen. And TW2 is twitch-based combat, maybe even hardcore twitch-based on higher difficulty settings. It was always meant to be an action rpg.

Yep, and I liked the fact it was always meant to be an action RPG as long as they paid proper due to the story.  I also like the idea combat will be difficult...as it should be.

Like I said before, I have no problem with a company making a game for all platforms as long as the quality is evenly distributed and one or the other platform does not suffer.

Why the criticism then? From all accounts DA2 will be less of a hack 'n slash game than The Witcher; the PC version of the game is being worked on evenly with the console versions; and there is no indication the story won't be strong.

There are a couple of indicators that point for trouble in DA2.  The main one is the development time that has gone into it.  Just over a year for DA2 would have made me VERY wary even had EA not pumped a ton of changes into it.  This gives me the impression they're rushing their product and going on the fly as does the way they sort of abandoned DA:O and moved onto a completely different concept with completely different characters, including the switch to a set character.  Historically, EA has been cliche` as has Bioware, so that along with the short development time raises my suspicion the story won't be as strong.  Too, had bugs been properly addressed in DA:O, Awakenings and the DLCs my criticism would not be as heightened.

TW2 was been in development for over 3 years.  Given that TW's storyline was stronger, more immersive and more geniune than DA:O and the fact TWEE was given to people who had already purchsed the original TW I guess I have more faith in CDProjekt at this point.

Perhaps the best way to say explain my criticism and wariness is this:

When I look at the screens and videos for TW2 I know the story will be different but there is immediate familiarity and continuity.  When I look at DA2 I don't feel that.

As for my criticism on the quality shared between consoles and PCs, depending on which platform a game is originally developed for, I've never seen it be equal.  Until I see it happen I will always be suspicious of efforts to address both.

Having said all that I want to state that I hope DA 2 is a quality game that does have continuity and that EA can pull off equality between platforms but I'm going to wait and see the proof before I judge either way.

Are you people saying that Mike was lying when giving this interview? Or that the magazine made that up? Because i don't get it.

The reaction on these forums was explosive. He had to make some kind of damage control.

He said that they aren't gonna release a toolset. He said they are considering it down the line but common you know it's not gonna happen. About the isometric camera? I haven't seen it yet to comment. But it sounds tacked on.

The original article was in French, and I'm pretty sure Mike Laidlaw doesn't speak it. So someone was translating from English to French to the interviewer, and then another unofficial source translated that French back to English.

Also, here. Specifically:

We'll eventually decide if and when this will happen-- though I will say that the only reason you received the DAO toolset in timely fashion was because of the release delay. Had there been no delay you probably would have received the toolset around the time the game actually did come out-- we don't tend to work on packaging up a toolset for public consumption until after our work on the game itself is primarily done.

I think he was pretty clear about where the money is. Comon, you can't be that gullible man.

It's damage control. Ever read 1984? This is the same thing. You people like Bioware so much you're willing to swallow this up.

Did you just equate EA/Bioware with 1984?  George Orwell is rolling in his grave.  Granted, he's perpetually rolling in his grave as people miss the point all the time.

Bad analogy i know.

Well i mean like they said some things very clearly.

Then they made some damage control, and now people are swallowing it up and are defending this game to death.

It's a hack and slash ok, nothing wrong with that. Some people will accept the changes , some people wont. But don't make me an idiot telling me that DAII on PC will play out the same as Origins.

Here is what was said, in a different language that the interviewee does not speak:

No toolset, no isometric view.

Here's what was clarified:

We don't know if there'll be toolset, but there won't be a new toolset, and we haven't nailed anything down with PC camera controls but isometric view is probably going to be different.

I can see where the mistake was made.

Another thing, in no way is a toolset guaranteed to us. Before DAO, only NWN had a toolkit. The fact that they have said nothing about it is indicative of nothing, as I point out with David Gaider's quote. We didn't even find about about the toolset until close to release date--but then the date was pushed back.

And I see you're so intent on hating everything they're doing you'll cry conspiracy no matter what anyone says. I mean, just today there was confusion about rogue's getting an active dodge/roll ability. I mean, this is what the preview itself had to say--and the devs have to just point out "No, he's wrong". They get things wrong a lot.

ORLY?

Hmm..."yarly" I guess, because what he says totally makes no sense.

"Vous trouvez Dragon Age 2 en masse."

You find DA2 as a group?

Edit: Hmm, maybe he meant "Vous trouverez Dragon Age 2 en Mars."

Bad analogy, just like that bad list of RPGs you came up with. Unless I'm grossly mistaken, 1984 was basically about totalitarianism. The devs have said that combat functions the same way it did in DA:O on the PC since the beginning. Believe it or don't. At any rate, we can all wait until the game comes out, and then you can either laugh at us all for being wrong, or you can eat your hat if what they've said all along turns out to be true.

Toolsets play an integral part of keeping a game alive years after it's released.  Of course, in order for it to stay alive the game has to be truly excellent.  Case in point: Baldur's Gate 2.  It was released in 2000, and folks are still modding it, this from a game that didn't even offer a toolset.

There are people who love modding.  Don't discount them just because you're on a console.  Ofttimes there product is better than the original.  Some of the mods I've downloaded for DA:O are ten times more challenging and provide some actual balance to the game.  Too, it's awesome to see the different slants everyone has on it, and when you're talking about multiple plays mods make replaying more interesting.

The reason few people cared with NWN is because it was a good but not an epic game.

If the original toolset isn't updated for DA 2, no not everyone will care but those that do would have kept the game alive much longer.

Eh? I play games on the PC. Almost exclusively so, at least insofar as games I plan on purchasing. When I say I have a hard time seeing the value in the toolset, I mean this as a PC user. I'm happy with the vanilla version of a game, and generally am not interested in whatever twist or alteration someone came up with.

To me, KoTOR is a game alive today. I replay it every few months. Why? Because I like the game. I don't get mods for it; I play the vanilla. That doesn't matter - the game is awesome.

Hell, my favourite game of all time is Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. That game is brilliant. There may well be a mod community for it, but it's certainly not one I use or am implicated in.

Ah, man, then you are missing out on some great gaming.  Like with anything, some mods are bad but some are really really good.

I just don't see the appeal to most mods; certainly not for a game like DA:O. I did think the NWN SP mods were brilliant; once I got into a few of them, they absolutely justified my purchase of the game. But that was a whole toolkit built around the idea of a do-it-yourself game.

The appeal is creativity and additional experiences.

Well, for starters, there are number of horrendous bugs and glitches you can fix with mods, as well as expanding your options in the character creator. Those are the mods I use the most-- they don't really change the game, they fix it or just add some cosmetic things to it.

The mod that removes stupid power auras saved the whole game for me. I was literally one more flaming sparkle parade cutscene away from throwing the game in the trash, then I found that mod, and an obsession was born.

There's nothing wrong with liking the vanilla, but I would still chime in to urge you to check out some mods, as you can get a more "authentic", if you will, vanilla experience with the bug fix type mods.

Its a shame. There is a brilliant mod called Dark Times that is as good as some of the DLC.  You should rethink your stance.

I have felt at least some of your pain so I can relate.  I caught a bug right before having to host a two day seminar on teaching users how to use a health insurance application for under privileged individuals that I programmed for the state of AZ.  Man, that was not fun at all.  Doubling that time, plus speaking in a foreign language, would definitely be horrible.
