Therum - to get Liara. Essential if you are not Adept.

Noveria - of course, you can bring Liara. And this gives you a chance to build up persuade for...

Feros - which has one level 12 persuade check.

Virmire - the only one left :) Doing this last leads into the best endgame IMHO.

I'm starting to think doing Virmire as soon as possible makes the most sense, the more I play. Sure it may be more climatic to do it last, but really it raises the stakes sooner into the game. Honestly, I'm not sure what I mean by that it just feels "right" i guess. I still can't decide if Feros or Noveria should be the second planet, though. I'm thinking Feros, the attack on a human colony seems to be very pressing. Even though, it does make it difficult to do the persuasion check HappyHappyJoyJoy mentioned.

Therum will always be first, imo. As mentioned, it seems a chance for Shepard to possibly get ahead of Saren and it also helps that Liara is definitely one of the more useful party members for a non-biotic. Even if I do play as a biotic, I'll still go Therum first though.

Just completed the game again and to me, this is the best order.

Therum

Feros

Virmire

Noveria

While going to Ilos from Virmire is 'action packed', saving Noveria for anything but last makes me wonder why the hell Saren has been sitting on his butt when he had everything he needed to launch the invasion.

Because he is working on an army of Krogan and trying to figure out how NOT to get indoctrinated.  The rational I always have is Saren is trying to work around Soverign until Shepard comes and puts a boot up his ( ! ).

I liked doing Feros first last time, then Therum, Noveria and Virmire.

Game play wise, if I need an adept then Therum is always first, and Feros last to get the bonuses.  Noveria often in the middle to fill out points for Para/rene skills.  But that is simply the best gameplay for me, not so much the best story order.
Story orders I like are
Feros--Geth and another colony, ck asap to see what is going on
Therum--Find a prothean expert to help understand the Cypher.
Noveria--Ck in to see what Benezia is up to, and what she knows.
Virmire--Find Saren and plant boot.

Or

Noveria--Find out what is going on(geth reports, Saren interest and Benezia interest).
Therum--Find out how she is tied to her mother, and what she knows about Protheans.
Feros--Investigate a Geth attack on a colony.
Virmire--Find Saren and plant a boot.

Full of metagaming:

Therum usually first-not to give a chance to Ms. T'Soni to tell me that I killed her innocent mother. Or be persuaded that I killed her mother. So I go to Liara before Noveria. Beware of battlemaster-at least 1 biotiс in team.

Noveria. That funny room full of funny bugs - I prefer biotics in team capable of holding Lift field big enough and long enough.

Then Feros. Lack of complicated fights, but highest persuasion check - if you not a perfectionist, you may walk to Feros first, but I love renegade persuasion (How many chances do you have against SpeCTRe?).

Then Virmire. Don't know why I keep it as last - maybe I just want Citadel lockdown followed directly by pre-Ilos scene? After armour quest paragons even don't have persuasion check. Trick is not to forget give normal armour and work with character points for person who will replace human squadmate (I had very, very fragile Garrus once). Most complicated fight - bomb site second entrance.

Well, it's a testament to the game's quality that you can get a satisfying story going about it any number of ways, I guess. I like the structure of my order, I think mainly because doing Virmire in the middle is also very "filmy"; the villian showing up halfway through the film to cause havock and remind the audience why the hero must destroy him, then not showing up until the final showdown. I can definitely see the appeal and logic of doing Virmire last, but to me it just makes Saren feel absent for the entire game.
