I'm fairly sure that Mr. Laidlaw would even say that combat will be somewhat like that.  "Fight like a spartan", "push a button and something awesome happens" and all that, after all.

Just for the record, that would be the worst possible description of a game like Devil May Cry (which is the only game on that list I would play). To do something awesome in that game requires a pretty hefty grasp of a complicated combo system. Button mashes is not possible at higher difficultly. If anything, pushing a button to make something happen is far more like an RPG, where your skills are completely removed from the action.

Over the top aesthetic =! hack & slash.

All revealed combat gameplay, both official and unofficial, seems to many (myself included) to look like that kind of combat.  Combat gameplay, that is.

Except it's exactly like Origins, you've got the spells you pressed and you've got the auto-attack. The only differences being is that you can attack manually instead of auto attacking should you desire and that the animations are faster.

I'm fairly sure that Mr. Laidlaw would even say that combat will be somewhat like that.  "Fight like a spartan", "push a button and something awesome happens" and all that, after all.

And Dragon Age was marketed as...

"Engage in Bone-Crushing, Visceral Combat: Battle against massive and terrifying creatures

Unleash legendary powers and choose from over 100 different magical spells and skills

Experience the adrenaline rush of brutal combat, beheading your foes or casting spells that make enemies explode from within"

... but that doesn't make it an ARPG to the people on this forum.

I think the game looks amazing i dont understand why so many people dont like it...

It depends on many things, but I'll toss this one out -

Do you like any of the following games?
Diablo 2, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Fable, pretty much any Zelda game, Dungeons and Dragons: Shadows over Mystara, River City Ransom, Ninja Gaiden, Dynasty Warrior, Devil May Cry...

and don't mind DA2 playing somewhat like them?

The ones who DON'T like the gameplay as shown might just not want DA2 to play like the list above.

You left out Double Dragon and Final Fight.

There is the other video floating around that shows an entirly different side of the combat. Which is the pause, survey the field, assign companions to do what you want them to do, unpause rinse and repeat.

Maybe I am missing the mark.

Some just doesn't want to accept any changes in what they has liked.

Also some people cannot see the wood for the trees.

Buzz words do not define a genre.

It depends on what you take action rpg to mean.

I go with "combat is the focus of the game and combat depends more (or solely) on player reaction times and reflexes rahter than on character stats."

DA:O, for me on the PC, reaction time was not an issue.
ME2, even with being able to pause, reflexes and reaction times were definitely an issue.

Again, it depends on what you think an action RPG is.

I said the video have looked like X... it may well play like Y for me and in the end I won't call it an action rpg.

But that's neither here nor there -

a person asked "why would anyone not like what they are seeing" and I gave an option of why.

That option got attacked for being inaccurate, but I think it stands.  Some people have seen the gameplay shown (official and unofficial) and think it looks like gameplay they don't enjoy.

You can't disagree with that.

I just listed a bunch of games that had combat that could LOOK the same if you weren't playing it.

Pick this all apart as you will.

Oh, I see - What's your favourite game, then ?

To answer your question : Some people don't like DA 2 because :

1) They don't like visuals - It reminds them of more action orientated games, which they don't like

2) Afraid that the visuals is not the only thing that changed : For example companion's inventory is confirmed to be more MEtish

3) Afraid that DA2 won't have BG (probably the most famous Bioware RPG) feel.

River City Ransom? I loved that game. What IF DA2 played somewhat like that.

The brothers Hawke, a pair of Lothering school students, run into some trouble with the Darkspawn gang. While trying to stop the thugs from vandalizing their home, Carver's girlfriend is kidnapped by the evil kingpin "Archdemon". So the two brothers set out to Kirkwall city, cleaning up the mean streets and along the way, learn the ancient grey warden martial arts like stone hands and dragon feet.......

Wait a minute.....I think I'm onto something......Its not too late! maybe I can persuade Mike....

Uh.

No.

Well... sometimes.

"Anime" surely is called "anime" for it's style and not just country of origin.

But for games... no.

Well.

Text adventures, due to only having text and no pictures, are text adventures as a result of a lack of animation.

And the old FMV games were FMV games because they used live action video....

but, seriously, no.

Why would you even try that strawman?

For console gamers, probably.

For computer gamers who stayed down at over-the-shoulder camera level and barely ever paused (and tried kiting somewhat successfully), sure.

For computer gamers who pulled all the way back the camera view, and combat was a series of pause, orders, unpause, a few seconds passed, pause, orders, unpause, a few seconds passed... no, it looks NOTHING like DA:O.

My gameplay looked nothing like any of the footage shown.

Why would they make the PC version more of a console type game than the console demo? That doesn't make any sense at all.

But they said specfically that you still get a top down camera and pause and tactics. So unless they are flat out liars I don't see what there is to worry about in this video.

Mostly agree with this -

though answering the first question would involve a long drawn out "can't pick a favorite, here are several contenders" and would really be derailing the thread -

and also we could add people who strongly dislike the ME games and any even surface superificial resemblances to ME drives them bonkers.

I loved the ME games, but I'm just saying.

So are you just assuming the devs are lying?

Um yeah because this footage was from a console not a PC. According to the devs PC still has auto attack and pause and give orders with a tactical view.

People need to stop saying this because it's totally misleading even if not fully inaccurate. It is more like ME in that you can't change how the companion is dressed. It is no at all like ME in that you still have full control over customizing the stats of their gear, or actualy equiping and unequiping from an inventory menu. Plus it still retains a numerical focus, accesories and actual weapon equiping.

Not more - Pretty much like.  As to why,  that  leads to  the question of  platform-development focus - I am not sure that Bioware has enough time to make the versions different.
