Just saw the video.... cancelling my pre-order. If I wanted to play God of War I would buy God of War.

When does the Witcher 2 come out again?

The game with click-to-attack, no party, fixed male character, VO, and quick time events? That game?

Why do people keep saying they won't buy DA2 to buy the game that takes it one step further in terms of less customization and less party-based tactical combat? Seriously?

Here's the problem in my opinion:

The gameplay certainly looks likes a hack and slash but I know it's not because I know most of the elements from Origins are still there. However, what if someone who has never played Origins thinks they're getting a hack and slash game?  One of the developers have said that you could play DAII like a hack and slash but up to a certain point. Eventually, though, the battles will get tougher and you'll have to pause, asses the battlefiled, assign actions, move companions around and so on. I have a feeling people expecting a hack & slash game will be terribly surprised.

Oh, so there is equipment in God of War? Pause? Auto-attack? Lots of abilities? No combos at all?
And here I was thinking God of War was a hack and slash.

DA2 looks like it is now a hack and slash that they have just jazzed it up a little with inventory and all those other things you mentioned. What was wrong with the combat in DA:O? They have changed from more of a classic style RPG game to what is essentially a button masher.

Exactly how is clicking once and then watching the character auto attack a button masher? In a DA:O sort of way? Just because characters don't take forever between attacks that has nothing to do with button mashing.

My concern with this thought process is the Looks like part, sure the animations are faster and flashier.. but ignore them, just look at the way it actually plays. Ignore the really... quite terrible player, and just look at the mechanics. It's pretty much exactly the same.

Maybe I'm missing the big flashing sign that this is an action adventure or whatever genre you want to call GoW, but to me it just looks like (hah irony again) Origins with a few tweaks and some actual art direction.

AFAIK, March 8, 2011 it is. I'm buying both TW2 and DA2 though.

Someone said you can NO LONGER CHANGE THE "APPEARANCE" of your companions??!!?!!?!!

IS  THIS   TRUE???!?!?!!?!

IT Better NOT BE.

This Means mods will be useless.

Someone tell me I misread that....Please.

Also the game play cannot stay like that and not alienate the "Old School" RPG"rs.

Almost seemed "Vindictus" ish..

The appearance of your companions is static. They will wear the same outfit, with occasional exceptions. Hawke's inventory is as DAO's. The companions have upgradeable stats and bonuses that mean you can alter it as you please. It will still look no different. Necklaces and rings are still wearable, but they still don't appear on your character.

You mean your main character has the same inventory as DAO, the companions have upgradeable armor that simply looks the same, and the combat moves quicker without all the shuffling. Tactics are still there, but there's more reaction.

Ok I was under the impression that DA2 has different attacks mapped to different buttons (on console) which means one X for 1 attack, Y for something different etc so to do a combo you mash buttons as opposed to more classic style RPG's.

Oh and with the Witcher, at least you know you are going to get a simplified game. It is not an RPG per se but the combat and gameplay is heavily based on choice and planning. You need alchemy to survive and have to balance potions and toxicity etc. It may be simpler but there is still a lot to sort out.

In fact, DA2 on the console feels like DA:O on console in this regard - the difference being that the special attacks are generally faster and more responsive. If you played the 360 or PS3 versions of Origins, you could map special attacks to any of the face buttons and then 'button mash', as it were. Was it the best strategy? No, not really - it might get you through on easier difficulties at the beginning of the game but eventually you'd have to start playing tactically on the harder ones, generally around when you got to the Korcari Wilds

It's not something new to DA2. Mapping attacks to face buttons was a feature of DA:O console versions.

EDIT: De-ambiguified some wording so people don't think I'm saying DA2 and DA:O are the same on consoles.

/facepalm

Have you followed development of the TW2?  The new combat system is a lot more action oriented and like God of War has quick time events (QTE) for boss fights.

What about on PC? DA:O was an absolute joy to play on the PC. The combat was great. All the video's I am seeing are for console so as a PC'er I really have no idea how it is going to work on that.

Have you followed development.... you don't have to use the QTE's in the Witcher 2.... which I won't be. But thanks for your concern.

I would say that if you enjoyed DA:O on the PC, you will probably enjoy DA2 on the PC. They are not radically different games. It's certainly more responsive and, in some cases, faster - but you can still pause, issue tactical orders and then unpause to let your party carry those orders out, much like DA:O.

Of course, I'm not exactly an unbiased source, so bear that in mind. I feel as though we haven't deviated greatly from what we did with DA2, but some people might find things like closing attacks and faster animation speeds to greatly change the complexion of the game. I wouldn't necessarily agree with those people, but until they see PC gameplay I can certainly understand why they might be concerned.

Sorry to disagree with you but from the video i don't see anything resembling DAO, if i did not know that i was watching DA2 i would think it was a different game apart for the creatures in the game.

Out of curiosity (might be common knowledge I've missed) will the new console system be available on the PC? In addition to the normal one obviously.

It's not a huge draw, given I rather like the DA:O system, but it would add replayability and the like. Change of pace. I think it would be a "nice to have" (even if it would blow peoples minds)

What about basic movement? Do the characters move around as quickly on the PC as they do on Consoles? And is the speed of attack animations much different?

I've seen a gameplay  video at Gameinformer that shows the player actually pausing and switching to other companions. Yes, there's unfortunately plenty of videos that don't show the players doing those things.

It takes a lot more than a pause to make good combat.

I know the guy was very bad in the way he played but it just showed all the weaknesses in the combat and i don't think Bioware can fix them.

It's not just the combat, all the changes they are doing means the game is not for me.

All the changes are the things i liked in DAO, if they take them out all we have left is just like watching a video without any gameplay.

You're right and I do understand yours and everyones concerns about the recent changes in combat, dialogue, etc. For me, they're no deal breaker. The story and the relationships (lame I know) was what really made me love the game. Those aspects are still there in DAII from what I can tell.

Such as?

Tell me, what changed about the combat  that you saw in the video except being faster? Especially with John Epler right above you telling you that's not the case, and that it's essentially the same.

Honestly, to the PC users that are screaming bloody murder. Go look up some console videos of Origins, you'll see that it's not radically different.

And no, animations do NOT make the game "hack and slash".

Running and spamming spells is not really an option in DA:O. It will get you killed quick. The guy in the video was doing plenty of both, which suggests a pretty significant change right there. Not saying it's good or bad ( it was bad in Diablo, I know that) but Bioware's going to be doing damage control with each new gameplay vid because of the way combat looks now.

Psychologist are going to stop using rorschach tests and start using these DA2 leaked videos. They're a great way to see what is going on in people's minds. Cause no one can draw any conclusions about the game from what we've seen.

Though he pretty much got his party killed, he's probably on an easier difficulty and he's at the start of the game. You could probably sneeze and beat through an Origin story. Gameplay wise, it's the same.

Can we get back to talking about what's actually in the clip, rather than wild speculation. I'm still interested in the new animations. Are they final?
