I was wondering which set of hardware runs the Toolset the best
I currently have,
AMD quad core processors, 4 cores, 2.4 Mhz
8 GB of physical memory installed
NVIDIA Geforce 9500 GS (512 MB) (I don't think this device is the best, but I am not sure what is)
A Seagate 750 GB hard driove, with about 400GB free).
My system seems to perform worse the longer I work on the Toolset. When ever I click on Physical Appearance button when crating or editing a character ther is a 50% chnace that the system will freeze and I to force the Toolset to close.
Best System Hardware for NWN2 Toolset.

well, nwn2 was not optomized for whatever reason for multi core cpu's...but besides that fact, i think your best bet would be to plop down around 200 and get an ati video card that's really good.
geforce/ati both have their ups and downs, yet for 'building' i would go ati. for something like a 'shooter' go gforce...my two bits

In the toolset, you can set the use for dual core (actually you don't have to do anything, it's going to use two of your four cores automatically.) There is definitely some memory leakage going on with the toolset and there's been no optimization to reduce that as far as I know. Due to this, there are times when you'll just have to reset the OS (restart and then reopen the toolset.) I also don't recommend that you run other things (even with the 8G of RAM, the more RAM for the toolset the better)
Some folks (such as myself) do not and will not use the Appearance Wizard because it's so prone to crashing/freezing the toolset. You can do all that and more in the Properties window of the blueprint being checked and everything you can do in the Appearance Wizard is in there plus a bit more.
As to the best gear to run the toolset or the game, well the best of the best is probably more than good enough, but there are odd times to be sure when it seems some of the less than the best gear seems to run better than the latest new hotness. Go figure.
I personally would vouch for ATi for the toolset and game overall, but then I have never ever had any graphics issues (in any game) related to any of my ATi cards and the only two Nvidia cards I have ever had were fraught with issues based on new driver updates and releases and so I am a pretty much dedicated ATi fan at this point.
Factors for performance: Decent video card with at least 512MB dedicated graphics. After 1GB I don't think it really makes a difference for NWN2. More RAM is always good. Air flow -- heat is not your friend. In fact, my desktop is dead in the water right now due to heat issues. I now require a new hard drive (and I still have to yank the data off the old one, but I aint' messing with it until I can transfer the data.)
Whatever you can do to dissipate heat, do it. This game and the toolset even more so, seems to really suck the juice out of a system and that means heat buildup. The more you can keep things cool the better. My video card and processor can shake off the heat, but even with a harddrive cooler, my HD couldn't handle the buildup. This is my 3rd HD since I got NWN2 and I know what's been the primary cause of premature death: NWN2 and the toolset over many, many hours of creative play.
When I get the new harddrive in, I am also going to modify my case and install 140mm fans (instead of stock 120mm or 80mm fans) and I am going to be adding in air filters to reduce the dust buildup (I live in a very dusty, rural area of Central Texas) as well. I will be going from about 24CFM of airflow in the case alone to 47CFM, doubling my dissipative capacity.
I have an older case, and some older cabling in there and then the drive bays are not well designed, so heat is a genuine issue with this system.
To recap:
RAM (more is always Better.)
Good to very Good graphics card (and I don't think you should have to drop two Cs for one just for NWN2, my X1650 PCIe Pro with 512M DDR2 does just fine, thank you and it's nearly 5 years old as technology goes.)
Good heat dissipation.
Memory Leakage issues require the occasional restart after a save.
Appearance Wizard is generally not a great thing to use. Some claim they have no troubles with it, but the majority of folks that have chimed in on it over the last 4 years indicate you should avoid it if you ever have any issues with it.
best regards and hope you find any of that useful to you in your journey into the toolset,

here's a perty little thing if you've 100 bucks to spend, psu and fans to keep it cool?

Thanks. I definitely have had problems with the Appearance Wizard, so I am no longer going to use it at all.
I recently got a new desk set (about 4 month ago) and while there is a place for the processor (out of sight). It is is not as well ventilated as it should be and I will now leave the door open when the computer is running.
I will get a new AT graphics card, I just need to identify the correct one to get. If the 1650 is 5 years old, what did it evolve into (whats the next generation?)?
I will make a point to turn all other apps off when running the NWN2 tooset. I just corrupted a file (the appearance wizard froze for the fifth time today and caused the corruption) that I had been working on for 4 weeks. I have an old back-up but it was still discouraging to have strrat over.
If I could spend up to $300 on a drive what would the best one for the toolset?

I just orderd an AT 5770 HD with 1 GB. It costs less than $200 (amazing) and was highly recommended by the installer, who I have dealt with for years. Hopefully this will helkp the problems with NWN2 toolset. What do you think are the odds of them updating this software? I would be willing to pay for a better toolset>
