I tried to ask this question during the Q&A session that was held last week, but to my disappointment the moderator didn't pass it. So I ask you, what's the point of romance in Dragon Age: Origins?

Don't be dissuaded, I'm not saying that I don't like the fact that you can have intimacy in video games nor am I some hard up guy looking to vicariously live through a fictional medium. I like that fact that games are mature and should be tailored for a mature audience. Besides, if a 5 second clip can get you there, you have more problems than just getting outside more.

All jokes aside, here's my point. From what I've seen, once you have intimacy with your partner it seems like there's no added effect or bonus at all. I'm not saying that your character should have a star-twinkling aura or anything signifying the event; however, I wish that there would be more purpose. It could be something as simple as additional talent points! (Get laid and get 2 points for free!)

Or perhaps it could unlock hidden talents depending on the morality of the character you made your companion (Leliana=Rogueish/Combat/Archery, Morrigan-Dark Magic/Transformation, etc...) Moreover, what of the consequences? Other party members could view your romance positively or negatively leading to additional dialogue options/character development/treachery.  It would be one hell of a thing to think that if you got intimate with one of your characters to have another person leave your group and maybe become an enemy!  Or perhaps you could have the option to sleep with someone only for them to have influence over you (because you like them and they just wanted to use your favor for their advantage). In combat, if your partner dies/becomes unconscious you'll become enraged doing additional damage and vice-versa or perhaps unique team attacks depending on class.

To provide additional support, for those that have played the game Ar Tenelico 2 (or have heard of it). In the game, you explore your female companions' chromosphere and you come to a point where you can only delve deeper if you decided to have 1 of them as your companion. This not only changes the ending of the game but unlocks more magic/combat options for that character.

TL:DR version, there could be more to the romance factor then 5 secs of clip like additional talents, story, or content.

So what are you thoughts? Posted Image

P.S. Just had an additional thought, picking classes could also be a factor and you could make it into a "God of War" mini-game where if you failed she'd could be upset or perhaps shrug it off and laugh at you at which point you suffer a slight debuff for a few days of game time or what ever.

Before I address your concerns; what previous BioWare games have you played?

Neverwinter Nights 2 is not a BioWare game.

No, I do not want a talent point or mechanical bonus for sleeping with a follower. There's already the influence system, which improves the follower the more they like you.

The *point* of sex with followers is allowing your PC to express physical and emotional intimacy with someone they care for. It’s a role-playing game, and I like that it supports healthy human sexuality.

I see, Sorry, the combat engine was very similar so I had assumed Bioware did make Neverwinter Nights 2, so off the top of my head. 0. I'm assuming you're saying that this was an utter complete waste of my time typing everything? which would be lol smiley face.

Right.

The companion interaction and subsequent romance plots are a big part of the experience that BioWare games offer for a lot of their fans. It's just more story content, and I don't think it needs to offer anything beyond that.

The read I get from this post is that you're looking at relationships in a binary had-sex/not-had-sex manner.

It's not like that. Sex is just another point on the curve from complete-stranger to perfect-soulmate - arguably, not even the most important one (even if it is the most discretely identifiable).

Get rewards for haveing sex...? That's just odd. I mean... Well... No.. It's just odd to me.

The point for it being in the game is becuse it'sa part of the romance that the PC can have. It's a part of our "the pc's" story. Shouldent be anything rewarding about that only that it's a great story.

Atleast that's my opinion.

Your idea of "healthy human sexuality" is ogre sex? You scare me.

Ok, I have played Jade Empire! After doing a google search and finding out that it was made by BioWare, and Unfortunately they didn't Make Neverwinter Nights 2 but did infact make the First Neverwinter Nights! Sorry to the literally obessessed majority of this forum. but i feel that it doesn't fall into the same vein as this title.

You can get a loyalty bonus if your companions like you a great deal, but this is completely independent of whether or not your character sleeps with them. Indeed, it's independent of the romances as well.

One one hand, I really liked the system they (Obsidian) had in place for Mask of the Betrayer. As your connection to your companions grew, you got additional benefits. The highest connection (and subsequently the strongest) could only be gained by romancing the love interest of choice.

On the other hand, it'd feel somewhat forced, enticing you to not roleplay, but to powergame and go for that romance no matter how ill fitting it would be. It's bad enough that some will have to skip the romance content for at least their 'prime' playthrough - I don't want to be punished additionally for it.

As I'm literally obsessed, I'll point out that three people corrected you, while there are several thousand people on the BioWare Social Site and at least one hundred actively posting member on this site, therefore we cannot in anyway be a majority. Posted Image

The reason that people are pointing that NWN2 was not done by BioWare is because popular opinion is that the romances in it suck. If that's your only exposure to RPG romances, it makes sense that you'd be left wondering what the point was.

A romance in a role playing game is just something you do for entertainment and story.. A romance can sometimes lead to additional quests or objectives to meet requirements for the romance. It's a plot device, same as movies and books. Something fun you can participate in or completely shy away from.. It's completely character driven.

Well, this is kind of SPOILERISH!!! OMG!!!

But having sex with Witches of the Wilds is a topic of some conspiracy around here after The Stolen Throne came out.

Maybe your bonus can be being cursed by some of the more twisted members of the female side of our race if you sleep with Morrigan?

I heartily agree that having sex in-game need not be rewarded through stat bonuses. I am concerned about this whole "expressing intimacy" thing, though - my PC's are deranged sociopaths to a wo/man, and view sex only as an instrument of manipulation. I want the option that the sex in DA:O be the vehicle for power games amongst the party. I am disappointed that Bioware does not support the manipulative machinations I want out of my video game sex scenes.  ;)

No need for the drama. As Maria said, it was pointed out to you because it's important to know that BioWare was not responsible for those romances. That's why I asked my initial question; I wanted to know if you had experienced how BioWare fleshes these plots out to give context to your post.

The romance is there as a story element, not necessarily a "gameplay" element.

I want the option for my male pc to run out of his tent screaming in horror as he learns his romantic partner wants to do more than just cuddle :D
