If you are a person who does not wish to romance a Npc- you don't.
If you just want to have smecks, there are brothels.
If you want to romance a character there are npcs, and if you feel the romance is not working out- there is a break up.
Whenever you gain influence over a character- sexual or not, it does have a temporary effect. They are more motivated to fight for you. Beyond that- giving points for sexy time is just a can of worms. I do get role play rewards in terms of npc character development, and storyline. Why does it have to be tangible?

Personally, I wish developers would focus on other things, but that's because I'm a completionist and have to finish as much as possible and romances (or rather, sex) mean nothing to me. Not because I am in any way offended by it.
I still think PS:T handled romances better than any game before or since. BGII is a close second, but only because that game is so long. Anything more than that and it just starts to get awkward. It's also really annoying to be in a PG-13 area and suddenly trigger a decidedly non-PG-13 cutscene.

As imported_beer said, you get an achievement for sexy-time, and you can upload achievements to the Bioware Social Site.

Oh let us flirt for a couple of missions / hours then: Wham Bam Thankya Ma'am, we are done: No more real dialog just the end of the game. Unfortunately I feel that Dragon Age is likely to follow the same path. You have sex, and then there is no point to continue developing the relationship.
I dunno, but when I play a character I don't usually play them as if they are likely to have flings with the applicable hot character that has been programmed to satisfy their needs in a magical world where when you are not wearing a bra but take your shirt off you suddenly have one.
Admittedly that last comment was directed towards how funny I find the advertising and is actually not an issue with me.

What use is a social site if I can't tell my gamer friends that I've had sexytime with Morrigan?

Do we get *the details* as well when achievements are uploaded? We could all hang out in a virtual bar and brag about our conquests. Sorry, but I'm finding this concept very funny.

What details? It's a cutscene.

To be fair, though, it could have an influence on pursuasion. Being an experienced guy may make it easier to seduce and/or pursuade the women you meet in the game.
Even so, it'd still be a bit far-fetched, too much to put it in any game.

This. I'd not want completely mushy "scare the rest of the party away with sugarcoated sweetness" until end of game, but some acknowledgement every now and then if the sex was the result of a romance would be more natural I guess. After all, it's implied you're a couple afterwards. Or at least that was the case in BG2 and JE.Gaviteros wrote...
I do want to say that I was extremely disappointed with the way the Romance was handled in Mass Effect, and before that: Jade Empire. It was handled as Sex being the final point in a relationship.

*snip*.
I'd also be positively surprised if one night stands (including or not including the PC) would be an option as well though, to broaden the options for the RPers.

Welll damn. Not gonna have sex now. I need my achievement points. Only reason I would anyway.
Sometimes, I make myself chuckle. Is that wrong?

I agree 110%; there should still be a lot to talk about after the fact, all the way to the end of the main quest. I had the same concerns that the romances would be a total repeat of Mass Effect but then I looked at David Gaiders previous work on IMDB, Knights of the Old Republic, and say what you will but I LOVED the romance subplots in that game (and everything else as well, it's probably my favorite game). I thought both the male and female stories were brilliant and memorable.
I don't know what else he's written for, if anything, but if it's anything like KotOR I will be very very happy.

Someone mentioned that there was a video of the influence system and the only thing that I remember is that IGN briefly showed just how party members are impacted by the decisions of the PC and not how it influences combat. I guess I'll just have to wait and see for myself seeing how if they did show that footage it could be a potential spoiler.
As far as the "real life" situations are concerned, it's hard to say specifically that sex is the culmination of the relationship though i have to agree that it all depends on the individual's motive (from one night stand to a loving encounter with your partner). .

I totally agree with that. A personnal exemple is when I played Ultima Online and just made my character wash when he woke up, and I did that alone in my tower.Mordaedil wrote...Also, roleplaying need not be interactive activity. Sometimes you do it on your own and it can be applied in situations where you're not entertaining anyone else. <_< Just because you don't make a habit of doing it...
As for the romances in game, i find them rewarding by their very existence. It's like an achievement ; I made the NPC love my character, yay! That is one of the reason why I'll most probably try to romance Leliana with my female Dwarf, for the challenge ^^ (I read in an article on Worldpress that homosexuality will be recognized as such).

From a game design point of view, I'd like to see some of the romanceable characters constrained such that your relationship would only intensify past a certain point if you did sleep with them. If you reject their advances they're likely to be a bit hurt, even if they still like you, so you might not get as much of a bonus as you would if you went "all the way".
Another thought is that after a certain point, I think being too intimate with an NPC could prove counterproductive - your partner could be distracted in combat if they think you're in immediate danger, and might shout warnings or even disobey orders/tactics to protect you.

Yes, it's even possible to have a platonic

Neverwinter Nights 2 is not a BioWare game.
No, I do not want a talent point or mechanical bonus for sleeping with a follower. There's already the influence system, which improves the follower the more they like you.
The *point* of sex with followers is allowing your PC to express physical and emotional intimacy with someone they care for. It’s a role-playing game, and I like that it supports healthy human sexuality.
QFT. Maria scores again. If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say the OP was relatively new to the concept of roleplaying being more than rollplaying.

I think it will be one of the main feats of DA:O to get the player involved not only by tossing items and experience-points at him but through story telling and emotional involvement.
Yes, i am talking about the player, not his ingame-avatar.
EDIT: does anyone know, why the portrait of my char isn't loaded?
