You need to play on Hardcore or above. It's on Tali's recruitment mission just before you talk with her IIRC.

Are you asking how and where to get the GPR or are you asking which AR to use if you dont have it?

If you do not have the GPR - the Vindicator is a solid assault riffle.

You will be fighting geth so...

Recommd Squad Disruptor ammo - if your Soldier dont have that, Zaeed has it.

Miranda is generally good for all missions.

Garrus is also a solid choice - (Area) Overload.

Guns... well... umm... I suppose Incisor Sniper Riffle for Zaeed/Garrus and Locust for Miranda. If you dont have them, I suppose any will do. Geth are generally pushovers... the only challenge is the Colossus at the end.

Heavy Weapons? If you have the Mattock, just bring the Collector Beam or a Grenade Launcher. Basically the Mattock alone will tear all the Geth apart like paper.

so i guess you need help killing the collosus? easiest thing to do is simple stay on the platform near the quarian with the rocket launcher and hide in cover and pot shot the geth around you. then move forward. i dont know any specific tricks but just avoid the collosus blasts and its like any other level. you can prolly do alot of damamge with the particle beam from that first cover position too. if your having trouble you can convince that quarian to shoot the collosus shields before the combat starts.

After you fight the initial wave from where you start, move up to the ledge on the right side.  Bring squad with you.  Clear the area up there, then run to the end of the area ( but still not on the floor )  You can attack the collosus from behind cover from there and it can't hit you if you use the vertical beam also.  Going up the left side is harder because you end up on the same level as the monster and its hard to dodge attacks.

My preferred group is Zaeed/Garrus for Group Disruptor and Area Overload, though if you have group disruptor on your soldier, then Miranda is probably a good second choice for the extra damage from her passive, and an extra overload. Make sure Garrus is using the Incisor. The same for Zaeed if you have him along.

The easiest way to get to the colossus is to follow what ryoldschool posted, going up the right side. Just remember that you'll have to deal with a couple of flame throwers, so make them a priority kill. Also, when you get to the end of the right side area, you'll still have geth that come up the stairs behind you, so be careful to not get shot in the back.

My favorite heavy weapon for that particular mission is the Arc Projector, to take down shields on multiple targets quickly, but honestly, on Soldier I rarely use a heavy weapon.

Also a quick reminder, that the Viper is actually better than the Matlock against armor, so if you are running low on Ammo against the Colossus then whip out the viper and go to town. Don't forget to arm with Inferno ammo to boost the damage even more once the shields are down. Also Miranda does really well with the SMG found on that mission, the Tempest, which in my opinion is the best SMG for squaddies. I usually pack along Grunt on that mission for his survivability and firepower. Garrus and Zaeed both seem to take too many dirtnaps for my liking.

As stated above use the right high platform, and post your squaddies behind you between you and the steps and let them guard your back while you take down the Colossus. As a fun way to end, I usually like the CAIN once you strip most of the shields off the Colossus to end that fight with a bang.

^^^ This is necessary - can't tell you how many times I got shot in the back, so I always do this also...  I've noticed that Zaeed and Garrus can hit the thing from that rear guard post as well.
