So I just reinstalled and patched Origins, and the game has been crashing randomly and crashing hard. Sometimes it's right at the loading screen, and once it let me get all the way to the character creation screen. The screen freezes for a moment, then my entire computer just restarts.  No error message, nothing, just a brief freeze before my PC reboots.

Thing is, prior to my last uninstall, the game worked fine. I just uninstalled it because I needed the space. That was a CD copy, and unfortunately I'd lost my manual with the key in it. I contacted EA with a copy of my receipt, and they were good enough to provide me with a free download copy via their download manager. (Which I thought was awesome of them.) This version, patch 1.04, just does not seem to want to work for me. I was hoping to replay and have a nice save file full of happy PC choices for Dragon Age 2, since I preordered that.

The only thing that's since changed is I updated to an ATI Radeon HD 5770 over my old ATI Radeon HD 4650. All other games (Mass Effect, Sims 3, Fallout 3, etc) run great on very high or max settings. I'm only having this issue with Dragon Age Origins.

I'm on Windows XP Home, 3 GIG Ram, AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+, MMX, 3D Now (2CPUs), ATI Radeon HD 5770 1 GIG.

Any help is appreciated. :)

Anyone have any ideas? I tried a clean uninstall/reinstall with no dice. My computer is clean of any sort of malware. If I can't fix this, I'm going to cancel my Dragon Age 2 preorder. If this one won't work for me, I don't see any point in getting the second.

When I first installed had something similar happen. Turned out to be my mouse settings. I had to uncheck the "Display mouse trails" option.

Hi,

For random CTD problems on 64 bits windows OS (and maybe on 32 bit) there is a working soluce here: http://social.biowar...3999/31#2037048

No need to disable some processors to make this great game run stable.

Best regards,

I appreciate the response, but I'm not having a crash to desktop. I'm having a complete crash that restarts my computer. The desktop doesn't even appear. :( I've tried the 4 GIG patch to no avail.

Hard Freezing is usually a Hard drive Issue.. Not often but Sometimes a Memory Issue. Id suggest Running your HDD down the Usual Diagnostic tools..(RUN----->CHKDSK) and see if that aides you in anyway... Caching to the Windows Page file on a Corrupted HDD can cause the Issues u speak of. Ever noticing it happening outside the game? or during other games? Sometimes Partition info can become jumbled and cause all sorts of screwy errors... and become most obvious when your taxing your machine..
