So i just started a Vanguard. The charge is really cool, but it does not seem to work well? Not sure.

I just got off the ship after waking up. Seemed like I could not charge when I wanted to. Is there something I was missing?

I would line up my crosshair and hit charge but sometimes I hear "cant lock on to target".

What gives?

You cannot charge things you cannot reach. Example: You cannot charge the mecs across the room where Jacob is.

If your back is against a wall, you might not be able to charge because the Charge animation needs some back room.

Edit: sinosleep has some nice Vanguard tutorial vids in this thread you might wanna look at.

Charge is awesome. That said, there are various bugs associated with it. The biggest one, or at least, the one that I run into the most, is you can't charge if your back is to a wall, box, cover, etc. Even if you have a clear path to the target, if your back is to something, you will get a targetting error.

Another big one is later in the game, during the collector missions, specifically relating to the moving platforms. You can charge on the platforms, but you cannot charge from cover. If you attempt to charge from cover, you will get the charge animation, but you won't actually move anywhere. To charge, you have to leave cover first.

There are a few other minor bugs, but those are the two biggies that I know of.

Another tip: Don't charge enemies that are hopping cover. It will almost always put you under them, or past them, and you can't shoot them correctly until you move away from them, because the game registers that you are shooting past them.

Charge also has an issue with doors, just like most powers do. You can't usually charge an enemy who is standing on the other side of a door. I has to do with how the levels are designed I am told, the Collector platforms as noted earlier have a similar issue. Also changing levels up or down stairs gives issues as well.

As for not being able to charge enemies you can't walk up to, it is a safety precaution to help prevent you from being stuck on a ledge you then can't get off of. Charge is one of the more fun powers but it seems to also to be the buggiest as well.

As a play note: Most people agree that heavy charge is better than area charge, but there are a few dissenters.

I've had a couple of occasions where I try to Charge with nothing behind me, and a clear path to an enemy in front of me, and I still get a 'Can't Get a Lock!' from Shepard. It's not a common bug, thankfully, but it does happen occasionally.

That being said, Charge is fun. My sister was playing a Vanguard on Mordin's Loyalty Mission, and Charged a Krogan off of one of the ledges. He landed on a ledge at the end of a ramp going down to the lower level, and quickly got up and made his way back up. The amusing thing was that he didn't stop screaming, so he comes back up the stairs and starts trying to kill Shepard again, and the entire time he's going, 'AHHHHHH!!!! AHHHH!!! AHHHHH!' I suppose you had to be there, but there's something about it that was hilarious.

I have had this happen as well, but I chalk it up to the same bug that causes pulled targets to turn blue and be warp explodable, but otherwise completely ignore the power.

A couple of other things - I don't think you can't Charge enemies who are in cover. Also, if you have an explosive cantainer or fragile crate "targeted" you'll get the "can't target them!" warning.

These are both true, but I think the bug we're referring to is where the enemy is in the open, there is a clear path to them, and Shepard is in the clear as well with nothing at his/her back, and yet when Charge is triggered, Shepard simply says "Can't target them!". I would note that this is a fairly rare bug, and is usually coupled with other bugs, like biotic physics not working correctly.

i've usually encountered that bug when i'm on some kind of deck surface. on regular flooring, it doesn't happen nearly as much.
