Is anyone else hating the combat at the beginning of the game?

I was a bit surprised/overwhelmed at the challenge of even Normal difficulty setting, but my feeling toward it is changing quickly as I get the hang of it. Standard advice applied in my case...get used to dodging a lot, and using Quen often. The learning curve is steep and it doesn't hold your hand. I resorted to reading through all the tutorial entries in my journal, because the tooltips are way too brief in both description and duration on the screen to be useful. "When all else fails, read the manual." :D

Also, it helps to make sure you're using the appropriate sword. I still sometimes forget, and wonder why I'm barely doing damage to my target. <_<

so can someone tell me if The Witcher 2 is worth it?
How are the load times and bugs? And anything else that's noteworthy and of course no spoilers pls!
Thanks in advance ! I might pick it up later today depending on the answers I recieve :)

125 page and you asking if its worth?. Sorry i have no answer..

I haven't read them because I fear spoilers, thanks for your answer it helped a lot.

@Persephone, mrcrusty, magic zarim, marshalleck, scepticmatt

Thanks! I guess that settles it, my main concern were bugs and technical aspects since the first one really had some major issues in that regard(still loved it though).
I guess I have to go shopping...

If you're concerned about spoilers, there are some in this thread. And a very significant one (especially if you played the first game) occurs in the prologue. I'd advise being very cautious with this and any other discussions of Witcher 2 until you get a chance to play it.

Anyone playing the game with a GTS250? If so, what settings?

Resolution?

1024 x 768

About combat, comments remind me of Gothic 2 Night of the Raven, really unforgiving at the beginning unless you played dirty with magic.

I'm also surprised at how attached I am to Geralt this time around. Feels much more like "my Geralt" compared to Witcher 1.

I think that is because in TW1 he starts out with amnesie and at that point you have zero connection to him while at the start of TW2 you have "his" full memory/experience of the happenings in TW1. It's pleasing, he feels 'familiar' the second you start the game, provided you played the first.

What many people do not realize (comments like how the game / tutorial tells so little about event backgrounds) is that the "Journal" log in the game isn't your average journal. It actually details a lot of important (but not essential) background information. Spend a lot of time in the Journal devouring all the writing of everything you can find in there. It's an easy-to-digest format as well. The writing is from the perspective of the character Dandalion, the bard and companion of Gerald. As you progress, Dandalion will be adding more paragraphs to the diary, either appending to existing items or new items.

1024x768? I'd say you should be fine on high settings. You can watch a video on youtube about the combat if you want, I haven't played Batman Arkham Asylum, but people say it's similar to that, too.

You could be right and I agree about the Journal. What I like about it is that it does have quite a lot of information, but also, it's written from the perspective of Geralt. It's a nice touch, shows that the CDPR guys put a lot of thought into it. It's a little bonus from a roleplaying perspective, too. I honestly don't remember if this was the case in the first game too, but either way, I like it.

I guessed as much, the reason why I haven't read through the pages. Thanks for the warning though :)

I'm not sure whether I should first import my Triss or Shani save from Witcher 1. I hate Triss, but am thinking that Geralt being in a romance with her will lead to a more dramatic story overall.

Am I inferring correctly that you can import? Holy crap didn't know that does someone know if there's a savegame editor out there for that since I deleted my saves a long time ago.

1. Yes, it takes imports.

2. AFAIK, there's no save game creator (there's an editor that works with existing saves), but you should go here.

Assassin of Kings indeed. What a cutscene.... I am assuming you're talking about that, right?

Ugh. I can literally see the flood of moaning that's sure to follow.

If it's any consolation, here's a comment from the reviewer.

"And for the record, I'd have been mid-80s on DA2. The Witcher 2 is much better."

Beautiful climax huh?

*continuation of ramblings* This game truely is a new-age RPG in that it lets you visually experience the plot whether you are currently controlling the character or not - transitions between gameplay and cutscenes are rather smooth (you will recognize them, but you won't feel like "taken away" from your gameplay experience.. it's just letting go of the controls for a moment, watch it... and long after you regained control you're still pondering the just-happened events..

This is what a modern RPG should be doing... pull the player into the visual world and keep him/her there. I'm sorry to say, but the direction DA was/is taking I feel is not the direction I like. DA in that respect feels more like playing a boardgame (map oriented). Cutscenes take you out of the boardgame, and then plop you back onto it.

Map / board oriented gameplay was fine in the old days when computers just couldn't deliver what's possible today. I think in that respect Bioware did not really persue innovation and sort of remained in the 90's frame of RPG design, focussing on storytelling more rather than presenting the player an actual living, breathing world to 'live' in using the capabilities of today's hardware.

Maybe not that extreme, but I will admit to having a lot less buyer's remorse with Witcher2 than I did with DA:2 (I'm not regretting my purchase one bit!)
