I find Quen and Yrden save my arse over and over again. Roll away, Yrden. back off, Quen, and step in for a few hits. Especially against the Endergra (gah, can't spell) Queens.

Yes but the roll away is very slow, it should be much faster. We are playing a witcher with very fast reflexes so why is Geralt so slow.

Because there is a specific talent in swordsmanship tree to increase your rolling distance as well as rolling speed.
You just simply could not be a lighitng fast swordsman, magic master as well as potion drunkie at the time.

Because they opted for a realistic pace and I'm glad for it. Button mashing doesn't work.

I don't call a fast reflex witcher made slow as realistic.

Please note that since Destructoid gave their 60/100 grade, the 'overall' score has gone down 1 point (from 92 to 91).

Doesn't really make much of an impact - except to make Destructoid look like a joke.

Gamepro review is up, which brings it back to 92.

I find the rolling to be fine and I didn't invest in the Swift foot ability. If it wasn't for the swift rolling, I wouldn't surivived the fight against the Kayran and Queen Endregas. Are you sure it's not your PC? Is it slow at any other places?

The guy can't even parry, unless you put some ability points into it.

Geralt rolls away pretty quick when I played, in fact if you invest in the Swift foot (+100% range when dodging) they can almost never hit you.

Geralt is slow to react all the time and it's not my pc. The rolling in Venetica is much better.

I have points in parry.

I dont use rolling to get away but get behind them but it's to slow.

So Destructoid gave TW2 a 60??

What a joke. I wanna be a game journalist so I can get paid to troll.

I'm all for respecting the opinions of others, but I found this guy's review just downright laughable. Based on some of things he rants about, I'm not even entirely sure he played the game. He sounds like the sort of guy that feels inconvenienced if he has to use more than two brain cells in playing a game.

Combat prortips:

- Use Alt to lock on to targets, if appropriate.
- Don't get surrounded in the first place.
- Spend at least one point in the dodge distance ability in the Swords tree.  Helps tremendously.
- Use Yrden to spread enemies out and pick them off.
- Use Quen, but remember that you don't recharge Vigor when shielded.
- Use Axii if you have time and/or there's one particular annoying enemy in a swarm.
- Drink potions.
- Use traps and bombs.
- Dodge using the spacebar instead of double-tapping, or use a 360 pad (though controllers are obviously garbage for the menus).
- You can curve/change directions of your dodge mid-dive. Use this to roll behind people.
- When levelling up, put just enough points in a tree to reach your first Adrenaline skill ASAP.
- Heliotrope and Group Finisher make you into an unstoppable force when used together.

Going to try Alchemy as a primary tree on this second run. Sword/Magic combination worked really well for the first, since there are enough not-so-great skills in each tree to make splitting points viable.

Rolling is fast enough for me, and no points in swift foot. I'm level 7 on my 2nd play through, think I'll go with the magic tree this time.

I also went sword+magic and I have to agree, Heliotrope + group finisher + Upgraded Quen pretty much trivialises every encounter.

What do you mean, while rolling tap A or D to roll to the right\\left?

About dodge rolling: If you start your roll going to the left, for example, you can round it out by pressing up-left and up, so you'll roll in more of a half-circle than a straight line.  Much easier with an analogue stick, if you have a gamepad to experiment with.  This is harder to do with the double-tap method in keyboard mode, I think, which is why I didn't find out about it till about 3/4 of the way through run #1, so use spacebar instead.

Another thing I should have mentioned: When trying to riposte, you don't have to click at the exact moment the sword icon appears when holding down Parry; there's some leeway with the timing. It also does loads of damage, so it's great for small-scale fights.

From gamepro review.

The key to The Witcher 2's combat, I feel, is patience. Just like in Batman: Arkham Asylum, rushing into combat, especially against a group of foes, is signing your death warrant. You need to isolate your foes, and take on the weaker enemies first before going after men-at-arms with shields or heavily armored knights. You're going to roll away and parry often in this game, especially against stronger foes or large groups of enemies. My approach features heavy uses of signs such as Aard, which pushes back a foes and can even stun them (or send 'em flying over a cliff or ledge), leaving them open to a one-hit kill; and Yrden, a spell in which you lay a magical snare on the ground, and when an enemy hits one, they are immobilized (and suffer some damage as well). Or you can use Quen, which provides a magical shield. In difficult battles, I pushed back the stronger foes with Aard as I engaged the lesser threats, rolling out of the way or parrying after getting a few strikes in. (The Quarter to Three forums have a thread dedicated to tactics for The Witcher 2; if you're having trouble, check it out.)

Well...if you suck at dodging, just invest in Quen and reapply when it wears off. Honestly the game gives you tools to play it however you want.

Now if you want to be a Min/Max kinda guy then Alchemy all the way with Crit mutagens, makes you a freaking monster. Impregnation best talent ever (if not worse named).

Anyone love this guys voice?

Great voice, great design.

I will do a bit of practise and see how the rolling develops, if i can get Geralt to bend the role it may be interesting, i think i will have to change some of the keyboard moves to get the correct move.

I have no problem fighting 6 or 7 soldiers but so far it doesn't feel right.
I use the keyboard.

You can spam buttons...in Act 3 after you become basically a super hero. Although you probably shouldn't do it on the Dragon...

The game doesn't scale very well with high level characters I've noticed. Or if you are on ur second playthrough and know which Talents are useful. Basically get to the end of the tree as fast as you can (which is like...the very start of Act 2)

Yeah, I dunno about that. I have only played through once, with magic specialisation, and although the adrenaline charged ability was nice, the talents I found the most game changing were the igni upgrades and vigor upgrades. There are certain abilities where the upgrade is significantly more powerful than putting in a single point.

Yeah but Adrenaline early in the game is VERY useful especially Heliotrop which works on Bosses. I mean I activated that on Letho during the first fight and he went down like a sack a of bricks.

The only Adrenaline ability I wouldn't work for would be Group Finishers. Since it only seems to work on humans. I went with a Magic/Alchemy with a focus on Crits, and when Geralt has 2 adrenaline abilities he will activate them both. Heliotrop+Berserk=MEGADETH

What was alchemy like? I see you are a fan of impregnation but it doesn't sound all that impressive in the talent description.
