The Witcher brought some new ideas into a genre that recycles the same tired tropes to death. I thought the dialog and story were great in TW1, so I'm excited to see what the story is like in TW2.

But mostly I just want to slice people up in this game. I have yet to play an rpg with good melee combat.

grregg,
in TW you had some quests and solutions closed to you based on your choices. You let the elves take the cargo->informant killed->no meeting on the dike->no evidence in certain case, you have to solve it in other way, much later, with greater effort. And so on.
Burning Wyzima - you mistake "historical background" with your story/choices. The revolt would take place despite your choices. The difference is in the outcome. Eg no funding for elves with the bank job...result in...you get the picture.

TW2 might do it better, we will see.

Heh... keep in mind that there is no "historical background", this is fantasy, so there is only the story created by CD Projekt. And they chose to make Geralt a relatively minor player in the larger scheme of things. I think it was a brilliant choice as it allows them to offer the player a number of choices, but at the same time to limit the consequences to a manageable level. Think for example about Act I and the Outskirts. You have some pretty interesting choices to make, but what are the consequences going forward? Outskirts get slaughtered either way, you land in prison anyway, Shani survives regardless. Abigail might live or die, but it really only affects one quest in Act IV and then her appearance in Act V.

In other words, the consequences are rather minor but, thanks to some rather brilliant design decisions on CD Projekt's part, first it makes perfect sense that they are minor, moreover they are presented in a way that makes them stand out and look bigger.

I think this is where many game designers shoot themselves in the foot. They get your character involved in some big stories as primary player, and not only struggle to explain why you are a big player, but then when it comes to showing the consequences of your actions, they have to content themselves with some text blurb, since actually showing the consequences in gameplay would be too costly. And when it comes to sequels, they are bitten on their collective ass again, because they are either forced to introduce canon, or into some serious gymnastics to explain why your choices don't matter after all.

For example, it is fairly easy for CD Projekt to continue the story of Geralt. How would you want to continue the story of, say, Revan? And that's precisely because CD Projekt managed to avoid "wide story branches" while at the same time convincing everyone that TW1 was all about story branching.

Frankly, I don't think TW2 needs to do better, the way they did it in TW1 was impressive already.

Grregg you're not being entirely clear.

I'm only on my second run through of the game. I have noticed some side characters missing, new dialog responses, a few quests that I hadn't rooted out, but I think you're right, the game's major set pieces are all essentially the same, much like Origins. like I said, I'm only on my second run and there are three essential paths to take.

Being too nonlinear may make for a rather scattered or frenetic experience, not sure. I'm curious just what CD Projekt means by nonlinear or how far they have taken it in TW2.

Edit: Actually, major characters can live or die as well depending on your decisions.

It's not a rumor, The people from CDproject have stated that they wont use DRM to fight piracy, since it will only harm the ones who pay. Instead they will fight the piracy by making an awsome game that people will want to buy. :wizard:

I think CD Projekt can afford to do it. The crazed hordes of The Witcher fans will simply hunt down and kill anyone who pirates the game...

GoG is amazing. I knew CD Projekt would offer some type of promotional bonus through GoG but the deal they are offering for TW2 blows any other publisher out of the water. I wonder what the execs at Ubisoft and Activision think of this crazy idea of rewarding and not punishing the people who buy your game.

Probably don't give a hoot.  Activision is making so much money right now I doubt they even notice a small developer like CD Projekt.

Well screw them. I haven't seen this level of trust and devotion to customer service in the industry, ever. You get TW2 DRM free, a pdf art book, manuals, maps, and a free game from GoG to boot. All of this for $45? Thats unreal. No other publisher would dare do this. And I guess the hard copy of TW2 will be drm free as well. Sorry, but I have to say it...

Your turn Bioware. Try and beat that.

I'm conflicted. If it's like any other GoG release, we can burn a physical hard copy, but I really would like the manual and maps in printed form.

I might end up getting the premium edition although I don't know how much that is. Really, all I want is:

-sound track
-maps and manuals
-making of cd

This is such a bold move on CD red's part. They'll sell more copies of TW2 this way, even though it will get pirated. And to people who pirate this game: it's worse than stealing from your own mother. Shame on you.

I am so stoked for this game. The day after I completed my first playthrough of The Witcher I went online and ordered the first book in the series it's based on (It's pretty good also, for anyone curious).

Yet I'm conflicted on whether I want to order the very nice premium edition, or get the digital one off of Steam. I do like having my stuff on steam. Keeps everything neat and tidy. Maybe I'll just splurge and get the collectors edition with the coins and the Geralt Bust... Decisions, decisions.

A lovely new screen shot.

I have DA2, TW2, and Deus Ex to look forward to next year. RPG's are getting more popular, and that's a good thing. Now if Bethesda will just get busy with that Oblivion sequel..

Holy ****e that looks awesome. It really blows me away that these guys go from their first game, which was running on a modified version of the NWN2 engine, to building this gorgeous piece of tech from the ground up.
