I just finished my first playthrough yesterday, took a day to think on the experience. I freely admit that I absolutely suck at the combat, had to play it on easy after getting repeatedly crushed by one of the prologue fights on normal. And I still struggled at times. Although I did start to get better I did suffer from Geralt not wanting to do things that I wanted to, perhaps my PC just isn't good enough and it was down to lag. I do remember one amusing point where regardless of how many times I tried to sheath my sword it wouldn't work and the guards in Flotsam actually started attacking me because of it.
My lacking Witchery ability aside, I really quite enjoyed the game. Having not played the first one and only having heard the hype about the second, and negative comments about the first (sex cards, etc) I was unsure whether I would like it. The story was good, kept me interested and wanting to find out more. I liked some of the character's immensly, especially Roche and Zoltan, probably because they were solid archetypes. Triss was ok, plus I have a thing for redheads, but I thought her VA was a bit weak. Roche's VA put some serious emotion into what happened to his Blue Stripes (I went with the Roche path rather than Iorveth, as I'm quite bored by Elves in fantasy regardless of specifics. They still always seem to make them arrogant elitist snobs regardless of standing in particular societies.) I cannot stand Dandelion, after only one playthrough I want him to die a horrible, horrible death. Is it so much to ask for a game with a Bard who is not an annoying twit all the time? Oh, wait, I've still got DA:O.
I will say the characters I met only occassionally intrigued me, like Saskia, Sile, even Loredo as repugnant as he was, was an interesting enough character.
I liked the night/day cycle, although I didn't see it actually being used much beyond a few quests. I would have liked to see a bit more use out of it, perhaps quests which take place at a specific time but if you don't do them within a few days of getting them they get failed. Or maybe that would be too much to ask for. The whole crafting side of the game bugged me. I could just never find myself interested enough to hunt down ingredients for different things. I'd rather just be able to buy the finished product in a shop than running around for the bits and then having someone put them together for me. I was always having to sell off stuff to free up space and then finding useful diagrams which required the stuff I'd just sold off and couldn't get back.
I enjoyed the mini-games for the most part, which is odd as I normally hate them in most RPGs. Apart from the dice poker, it just seemed such random luck and I'd rather have something more skill-based for a mini-game. At least if I lose at the arm wrestling I know it's because I suck and not because the computer decided my dice would roll to the lowest possible scores while my opponent get's all stars.
All in all I felt it was a good solid game, but nothing spectacular. I want to find out what happens next but I'll not be desperately waiting from now until the Witcher 3.
EDIT: Also, a question. Do we find out anywhere who killed Bousey? I might of missed it or chosen the wrong dialogue options but wondered about that.
