EVERY promo that consists of more than actual gameplay videos played without cheats or special modes is lame.

That is to say, EVERY promo with no exceptions.

Being sh!t and giving a wrong impression of the product is the entire POINT in marketing.

Succinctly stated: so what? I am singling this promo out because it is a specific and annoying type of marketing I detest. Ubiquity is not justification. Just because we are swimming in a sea of s*** does not prevent me from pointing to a single turd and saying, "eww!"

I'd rather have one poster of Triss looking hot then a character who talks abou sex through the entire game like Isabella.

I rather have well written characters used in ways that logically represent who they are. Triss is already attractive without hitting the lowest common denominator.

Honestly, that's as cute as it's naive. Maybe, I'll give you that, will it convince a few more then usual, but people can and will pirate anything. Any game, any movie, even before they are released. It's refreshing that you still believe in some good in people, and I really hope TW2 get's a huge success (so it could, maybe, work as a role model, even for BioWare).
But it could be the best game ever made, and people will pirate it.

Of course they will - to test it. Because *some* games are teaching people not to trust the advertisement. But if it turns out good, most, if not even all, will then buy it afterwards.

Of course, some might pirate it cos of the DRM, but I hear it is not as bad as usually in TW2, so these won´t be many.

Considering the game is also marketing itself as having an actually mature approach to sex as well, this just undermines that.

Or at least, it does from where I stand. *shrug*

Have people already forgotten the 'Girls of Dragon Age' Maxim shots? We may dislike it but this type of marketing is not limited to just CDP unfortunately:

The real question is whose idea it was.

That is true, and I actually even agree with your criticism.

Still, you should be aware that the same is done with most, if not all, other games.

Especially RPGs.

At least TW2 doesn´t fulfill THIS fantasy cliché:

Definately not. I just don't think that the "Other games do it", or "Other industries do it" is an excuse.

I'm aware that guys get overly-sexualised too, but that quite often goes as being part of them being shown as tough, strong badasses, rather than exclusively a set of knockers and arse.

These Maxim shots were pretty awesome, though.

i didn´t like the ones for Morrigan (I think the model was quite ugly) but the ones with Leliana... Wow:wub::wub::wub:

First time ever I actually considered looking at one of these magazins:D

Not an excuse, just pointing out that they weren't being any more degrading to women than others with their marketing (since some seem to feel that CDP are misognistic as it is).  As shown by the 'This is the new ****' marketing campaign for DAO with that rather horrible Marilyn Manson song over the trailers it's apparent that marketing in gaming needs overhauling, especially when it's done by publishers.  The question here is whether this was organised by CDP or one of the publishers.

And I hate male characters being shown as tough badasses, is as annoying to me as this.  Both apply to the lowest common denominator of the male psyche, as if we're too dumb to appreciate anything more.

If the Witcher wasn't already steeped in more cleavage than a cabaret, I might be put off by the image. It's tame compared to some of the cards in TW1, and from what I've seen of the sex scenes in TW2, they aren't holding back one bit.

I'm actually more enthusiastic about the combat after seeing more of it in the videos from yesterday, laying the traps and so forth. It looks rather fun!

And my Gamer reaction is: Thanks for setting the image of Gamers back decades!
So, I'm obviously slightly conflicted...but the two-thirds of me that's using my mind to think on this doesn't like it at all.

One game can't set back the stereotype of gamers when the entire industry's marketing department have been working towards maintainting it for decades. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/tongue.png[/smilie]  A little titilation is great, don't get me wrong (it's miles better than sexual repression!), but there's a line between titilation and excessive pandering. .. There are actually many lines of varying degrees that is different to everyone too, but that's too variable a beast to tackle..

I'd care less if they'd done a "Guys of Dragon Age" err, with a different magazine, obviously, to balance it out. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/tongue.png[/smilie] Especially considering Bioware have a generally more obvious female fanbase than other devs, if forum presence is anything to go by.

Apologies if I sounded confrontational, I know that's what you intended. :)

On that, we are on the same page, without a doubt (side note: I even quite like that song). Until the idea that games are largely the domain of straight, juvenile males gets weakened, I don't see it happening too soon. These things have worked, and other approaches are risky. I'd love to see some variety in how male characters are marketed too, for what it's worth, it's just with women, it has more relevance to me personally.

Also, apologies for draggin up the sex thing again. I don't want to spread the idea I want all games to be totally chaste, all the time. Just a little restraint and/or consideration sometimes.

Back to the actual game: I am rather dissapointed by the DRM specifics that came up yesterday to be honest. Even their DRM free GOG version will require the optional activation to be able to make full use of the future updates and DLC. I know it's a small niggle to most, but it's not entirely DRM free that way, even if it is no inconvenience to me.

It also looks a little harder than the first, which is brilliant. I love a game that'll challenge me. :D

Yes the combat looks good, that's why i think the playboy images are not needed, the game is more than good enough on it's own without silly pictures.

I like the atmosphere of TW2. Instead of the static NPCs in DA2 these look more alive. Villages look like people are actually living and working in them. You can hear conversations among NPCs that feel more natural and less forced than the ones in DA2. No dogs, cats or birds in DA2 which I remember were there in TW. It's odd that Kirkwall has no dirt. Even the Alienage feels tidy. It looks like everything has been swept and cleaned every time you enter the scene. Villages in TW2 look more realistic. It's those little details that add to the immersion of TW2.

If I understand correctly, the playboy thing is not in-game, it is just a promotion they did with the local Polish version of Playboy. And it was probably a smart PR tactic to help raise the profile in Europe.

In all fairness, we don't fully know her character yet. Those who have played TW1 know what I'm talking about. Many gamers don't trust her one bit. At any rate, her presentation in TW2 is vastly improved. She dressed like a hooker in TW1. Ahh well. People will always be divided by CD red's take on mature content.

On combat: the targeting is looking a little swishy, but everything else I like. They may have been influenced by Arkham Asylum, but this combat looks much harder and more chaotic. Enemies don't take turns attacking you, and damage from behind is bad news for the player. Seeing Geralt lob those bombs 40 meters out was really cool. There wasn't much for ranged attacks in TW1. I love the combat animations as well, and now I understand how they're linking moves together to form a combo. The guy playing in the latest vid was clearly good at it too. I'm really interested to see the arrow parry and redirect skills, and dagger throws.

I think what bothers me is that it does not in any way sell what's actually (probably) going to be in the Game itself. I played The Witcher and there was actually a lot more story and Dice Poker than sex.
Now, I realize that Advertising is not intended to reflect what the Product is...it's intended to make you want the Product.
And I personally, love a little Tush Image IPB
I just think they are missing the Mark with this.
The "Bullets and Breasts" crowd is going to see this, buy the Game, and then probably give it up after an hour or so of play.
The Hardcore Gamer crowd (male and female) is going to look at this and think the Game has no real substance to it.
And Women who were on the fence about the game are just going to feel that the Female characters are shallow.

Edit to Add:
I think I would have less of a problem with this if Geralt was involved too...

Exactly! The videos of TW2 make the world feel lived in and not just some static movie set like DA2 feels like. Its all the little ambient details that you mentioned that help make the game world more believable.

Of course that not something we'll see in a game that has only a 14-16 month development timeline and, what appears to be, bare bones resourcing.
