Started a new run. In the 'Woe to the vanquished' quest, I tried some different approaches.

-intimidate soldiers, bully townsfolk for cash = 30 xp plus some Orens

-hex soldiers, bully townsfolk = same

-persuade soldiers, bully townsfolk = same

-Don't bully townfolk = 50 xp, no orens.

This is like the blue eyes quest in TW1, where if you want cash and loot, you get it at the cost of xp. Only in that quest there are several different outcomes. The blue eyes quest in TW1 is like a template for good roleplaying imo. The different permutaions are balanced remarkably well.

Edit- this was the first stage of the quest where you rescue the two men.

I do not know bout you guys.. but i'm seriously thinking Triss is a Nilfgardian spy.

Urm.. why should Triss be a Niflgaardian spy? That pretty much goes againts her ideals and personality as set in the books IMHO.
They(Nilfgaard) treat mages like dirt anyway.

BW games seem to have a more black & white feel to it, have had some greyish tones but lacks the extra dimensional layer to transition into the grey area imo.

The problem in BW games for me, is that they are bipolar. And by that, I mean that their stories usually end up with Faction A vs Faction B, with maybe an incompetent and passive Faction C occasionally. Presented in extreme fashions (or as utter idiots / lunatics). Either one of the factions is entirely villified (reapers, blight), or they try something new like DA2, but both not only end up being idiots, but also be corrupted by outside evil forces (demons / thin veil / idol).

TW2 on the otherhand has 8 major factions: Kingslayers, Blue Stripes, Scoia'Tael, Kaedwen, Pontar State, Redenia, the Lodge, Nilfgaard. And several minor factions, like Temeria (major only in the prologue), La Valettes, Loredo, Aedirn (Stennis and nobility), Square Fish rebels, the conclave....etc. And all of them are more or less reasonable and sane in their self-interest, presented in a relatively realistic fashion.

All of them, at least the major ones, are integrated in the overall plot seamlessly as well. What Bioware usually does is either have only 2 factions, or several, but keep them divided 2 by 2 and don't integrate the totality in the central plot (kind of like Origins. Each individual choice in regards to what faction you pick doesn't matter for the others, if at all to begin with).

TW2 did not offer much in terms of variety of choices (it's mostly only 2 options, unless I am misremembering). I didn't mind that much because by God, the consequences were more than enough to impress me, in addition to the presentation and context regarding those choices. But in terms of a truly political storyline, with several factions, all integrated in a web of political intrigue all culminating into the final act, TW2 is unrivalled when compared to any game I played, period.

Exactly! You just explained it better than I could!:D

Well while the game is awesome.. i honestly thinks that there's still alot of room for improvement. We might as well suggest that to CDPR than keep on shoe polishing is it not? :)

They add enchantments in X360 version and convert in it our version so we receive enchanted edition in another way.

True. CDPR seems like the type to respond well to people's criticism and do what they can to improve however.
Although there's a fair amount of room left for improvement, TW2 seems like the template they should stick with and improve on.

I think there are definitely things they need to work on, story wise. It's of course not perfect.

For instance, I don't like how Ves is seemingly dropped on Roche path after Act 2. What if Geralt was starting to feel something for her, why can't we pursue that? Now it maybe because they want to lead us to the Yennefer romance, but I think they would be more subtle in their understndable railroading. Even having her die for instance, in Act 3.

And while I found the battle of Vergen on Iorveth path was decent, it has a big lack of cinematic feel to it. In addition to the middle part of the battle being repetitive (defending the same wall). I also did not like the fact that we could not fraternize with the Scoia'Tael on Iorveth, like what we can do wit hthe Blue Stripes in Act 1 and 2. I really liked Iorveth, but I still feel nothing for the elves in general, in part because they still treated Geralt like crap. Which is a shame. If they managed to make a terrorist really interesting and deep to me, I am sure they could have added nuance to the Scoia'Tael in general.

And finally, facial expressions. There is a sharp difference between how beautiful the game looks, and how character models barely show any facial expression at all. It did not break the game for me in the slightest, but this is something that they should improve on. That said, they odn't need to be spectacular there. I'll always take decent expressions / VO with excellent writing, than vice versa.

I thought it was pretty clear that if you "pursue" Ves, feelings don't enter into it.

Both paths are likely to have some "holes" in the story (fans are always gonna ****, there's always gonna be holes). I don't count Ves as one though. She played her part, and in Ch3 that part is over.

I just finished the first game for the second time, so I could get transfer data that I wanted, and am about to start. I just need to figure out the optimum settings.

Is there a recommended side to choose first?

As a side note:

I'm having some problems with my video card and the Performance Tester only reporting 994MB on my video card, which is weird because that's not even 1GB.

My video card is a 2GB ATI Radeon HD 6970m.

I'm just afraid something's wrong and the full 2GB is not being utilized like it should be.

I've been trying to look up help, but I can't find any anywhere.

The choices that you made in TW1 dont affect the choices you`re presented with in TW 2(ie: siding with the Scoiatael in the first game doesnt prevent you from siding with Roche), only some "events" will happen differently (if you killed the Striga in the first game; Adda will be dead in TW2 and Radovid wont be married to her... Also, if you were forced to kill Siegfried in TW1, you wont have the oportunity to meet him when you encounter The Order of the Flaming Rose in Loc Muinne, and some other minor event will happen...).
As far as I know, your req. seem fine, but you always can ask help in...

You mistake the night sky for stars reflected in a pond.

What the bloody hell does this mean, just heard it from a little lass in flotsam and I remember that it kept cropping up in the first game. I thought it was a password for whatever secret society Declan Leuvarden was a part of because he kept mentioning it but how would a bairn at the arse end of nowhere know it in that case.

Boys I am confused.

Maybe it's a direct reference to the books, but I agree. Why does the little girl in TW2 say it of all people? We need to goad Jan into posting on this. :)

JAAAAAAN! Where are you...you...you...?

Yes, it is a quote from the books. Vilgefortz to be precise. He tried to persuade Geralt to join his cause (and bring him Ciri) on Thanedd. What was the meaning, damn... I don't have the books with me where I am right now, perhaps someone else with access to them can explain it...

Or maybe it was Geralt... I'm not sure unfortunately...

It was a signature phrase of the wizard Vilgefortz of Roggeveen, the main antagonist in the saga, who used it repeatedly to point out people's mistakes or poor judgement, usually in mocking manner. So it's just a tongue-in-cheek reference to the books.

I found out that in Woe to the Vanquished, the Intimidate option is Random.  Because when I just wanted to check part of the prologue out, skipping all cutscenes, the Intimidate option failed.  So when I reloaded and after I started a new game, watching all the cutscenes, it was successful both times.

Yeah, but if only 994MB of video RAM is being used, then I don't meet the recommended requirements and that's what I am afraid of.  And I'd like to know if that is the case or if even though DxDiag and the performance tester say this 994MB, that the full 2GB is still being used.

I know that I meet the minimum reqs, and I should meet the Recommended Reqs, but according to the diagnostic tools I've tried I don't meet the Recommended.

But thank you, I'll try there.

And I know that there's not much that affects The Witcher 2, but in the first game I played where I just made random choices, Adda was dead and I wanted her to live.  Also, a boost in Orens doesn't hurt.

The only REAL difference (I think) that old TW1 saved games make "gameplay wise" is that they "transport" your swords and mythical armour. Plus 5% of the final amount of your money, I think.

I think the meaning is that you are mistaking a reflection or sympton for the real thing, sort've like mistaking fool's gold for real gold, and means that you are not seeing the true picture or something.  I noticed that it seems to be used a fair bit too, guess it kinda the theme of the story.

Siegfried, Adda, Thaler do play their roles in the story if have them alive from TW1. Siegfried especially plays a rather big role as does Adda. Thaler gives you an item recipe that is quite useful.

Thaler was alive in the default.

I thought Siegfried only appeared if you sided with the Order in TW1.

The only way to spare Siegfried (and not kill him) is siding with the Order...
