Question: Am I the only one who doesn't hate the combat from the first game?

I even quite liked it. I just see alot of people say they hated it, and I haven't seen anyone say otherwise. Just curious..

I don't hate it, but I can't say that I love it either.  It's ok, but I don't think the combat is what it has going for it.

I enjoy the story and investigation involved in interacting with the various characters, and trying to piece everything together.  I like the dark atmosphere, and that your decisions and rewards don't seem come across as idealistic either.  I also like the overall maturity of the game, from the cannibal in the swamp, and the guard addicted to drugs, to the foul language spoken by Thaler.

I haven't even finished the game yet, though.  I'm in Act II.  I need to get it in gear and finish a play through before the sequel arrives.  I wish that I would have held off buying it now.  I bought it pretty cheap a little over a month ago, but GOG is going to be selling it for $4.99 (dirt cheap) starting May 10 - 24. Oh well, I might go ahead and buy the original from GOG anyway, because I usually re-install Windows about every year, and their version is the fully patched Director's Cut with the DRM removed already, so there will be no need to patch it and it'll be ready to go.

Thaler was one of my favorite characters from TW1. Shame really he didn't have more presence from after Act 3, I would've loved him in Chapter 5 where the whole city was in chaos.

My biggest hope is that they improved the quality of the writing from TW1: I'm in the process replaying it right now, and pretty much every time someone opens their mouth I cringe; the dialogues are atrocious. Also: better voice acting.

I couldn't disagree more. I love most of the dialog. I don't understand where you are coming from, maybe it's because of the modern style?

I also play with Polish vo's which are much better than the English ones, but I have more respect for the writing in this game than any other I have played.

Most of it doesn't seem like two people talking; it's full of non-sequiturs, it has incredibly limited dialogue options, places where the subtitles seem to imply some kind of action which doesn't appear in the game or VO, silly melodrama, ham-fisted attempts at philosophy, constantly trying to pass off vagueness as profoundity, abuse of "...", overall it just feels awkward and bland. And this is the retranslated Enhanced Edition, mind, with the original translation I couldn't even make it through the demo.

But hey, maybe it's just me who's been spoiling myself with modernist literature lately.

I'm fine with the English VO, it isn't awesome, but to me it isn't awful. I grew attached to Geralt's and Triss' VA.

It sounds like two people, standing in separate rooms, reading two monologues in parallel. The directing is horrible, none of the voice actors know where to place emphasis and which intonation to use; it's like they were just handed a script and told read it verbatim. The accents seem to be a random hodge-podge without any consistency.

It's pretty much as bad as VO gets. But I really didn't expect anything else: It's a translation of a fairly low-budget game, so they probably didn't have a big budget to work with.

I disagree, Geralt's voice was what gave the game atmosphere, i think you should stop expecting the game to have voice over's like the present time as this would kill the game.

This is the Witcher world and that is what makes it special, turning the voices in to an American modern dialogue would kill the game for me.

I don't mind his voice, it's his acting that's terrible.

Also; who said anything about "modern American"?

His acting is perfect, that is his personality. That is the best part of the game for me and if that changed the Geralt would not be Geralt. Many people had to fight like a tigers to make sure it stays the same or very similar.

Exactly, after playing TW1 I read through the Witcher books (the only 2 release so far) and I love how CD Projekt RED captured Geralt perfectly.

That's like saying JC Denton's VA was bad, when it was supposed to be monotone.

His voice is part of his personality

Yeah, I get it: Geralt's supposed to be deadpan about everything, but that doesn't mean completely free of emphasis. I guess some of the performance can be excused as he had some truly terrible lines to work with, but still: He usually just sounds like he's reading lines from a script.

Oh and JC Denton's VO was bad, often hilariously so. Remember "What a shame"?

"All the quests I encountered were interesting and action-packed, and it was often possible to find alternative solutions to violence even if it was just through dialogue."

Nice, I like alternative ways to complete quests. Fighting isn't always the best answer after all.

Wonder if Adda will feature, i'm really in two minds on whether to let her live or not for my import save.

Not letting Adda live might have a big in-game consequence, considering Foltest granted her hand in marraige to Radovid, the King of Redania.

There could be a lot more chaos without Adda around (ironically).

Yeah that's what I thought at first but is her plotting solely the result of the curse or is Foltest destined to do a King Lear.

On the matter of King Foltest, I hear he says some golden funny quotes:

“Fall back, gods dammit! I forbid you to die like imbeciles!”
