I seriously hope CD Projekt reverses its earlier position and allows those of us who already paid for Steam pre-order to download and pre-install the game.

What? It's earlier position? CD Projekt RED has no control over Steam, Steam does whatever the **** it wants.

Actually Steam gives publishers a lot of flexibility in certain areas for the games they sell on Steam in areas such as pricing, unlock timing, pre-installs, CD key transfer to Steam, etc.

CD Projekt decided that it wants to make the pre-install a GOG exclusive, which I'm not too happy about because I pre-ordered the Steam version back in December.

This might be, but I'm pretty sure CD Projekt RED made no position/announcment on having pre-install on Steam in the first place, thus couldn't have reversed to it (because said position didn't exist).

I think you misunderstood me.

I'm saying that "I seriously hope CD Projekt reverses its earlier position" (earlier position being the announcement about GOG exclusive pre-install), so that those of us who pre-ordered the Steam version can pre-install.

Yes, of course, GOG is owned by the same people and they have made this decision for their own financial benefit, obviously.

Why buy it from Steam, anyway? GoG has the best deal by far, and all the money goes to the devs.

I'm sure CD Projekt RED has no ill will towards Steam, this is just probably a strategy to ket more rocognition to GoG. A logical business descision.

As for Steam not having the option to pre-install, that's unfortunate, though GoG is the better deal since Steam comes with DRM whilst GoG does not (or with any came GoG has for that matter).

Edit: Not to mention, as slimgrin said, all the profit from the purchases of TW2 from GoG goes directly to the devs of CD Projekt RED.

We'll be able to pre-download the GOG version, not pre-install.  They'll save the installer for the release day download, I imagine.  I'm guessing that we'll be able to pre-download two or three huge files(archives) with .bin extensions, and then download the small .exe installer on release day.

It's interesting to see how this will play out. I certainly hope the game is successful.

In my case, it's much more convenient for me to have all my games in one place (my Steam library), and I could care less about whether publisher makes more profit or not.

I also don't mind having Steamworks DRM on any of my games. It seemed quite odd that CD Projekt would make a big deal out of offering a non-DRM version. I hope it doesn't result in more piracy.

I suppose the pre-download may be installable, but just not playable until downloading the rest of it on release day. I'm not sure.  I'm just assuming that we'll be pre-downloading large archives, that'll be sitting on our storage media until the rest can be downloaded (the installer), so that it can be installed.

I don't like DRM, period.  I don't like having to have a client (Steam) installed in order to play games, either.  With GOG games, you can burn them on DVD or Blu-Ray or store them on a hard drive, or re-download them, and you're set.  You don't need any clients installed, or disk checks or online activations, or anything else.  You're set for years, and the only thing you have to worry about is OS compatability, but even that could be remedied if they continually update their games in order to be compatible with newer OS's.

None of the GOG games contain DRM, and GOG is proving that you can sell games without DRM and make money.  Although granted, most of their games are old.

How the hell does having games in 'more than one place' on your pc matter? If you have any games from disks at all, that's already the case.

And you should care who gets the money, because most publishers in the industry are greedy douches ( EA ), and GoG is one of the rare exceptions. Money to GoG = money to the people who actually made the game. So yeah, I'll be supporting them happily.

It's all about preference really.

For me I like having physical copies of my games and don't rely on digital ones (I bring up the recent and ongoing PSN drama).

As for the DRM issue, CD Projekt RED is taking a firm stance on DRM, they announced that they believe that DRMs only hurt the consumer and don't benefit anyone, thus GoG.

Now granted the retail copies to indeed have DRM, it's a custom Securom build, meaning it doesn't have the characteristics of the classic Securom which only gives you a set number of times to install/reinstall your game. The DRM is only implmented to prevent piracy before the release date (one-time internet activation via CD key).

They have also hinted that this DRM may be removed later on after the initial release.

I think you can download 90% of the game on the 10th and the other 10% when the game is out from GOG.

I don't own any physical copies of any games. Thanks to a few insane Steam publisher package deals, I have purchased around 60-70 games on Steam over the past few years. I usually only have a couple of them installed on my laptop at any one time and TBH I have no place to store physical disks and boxes, nor any particular interest in collecting them.

I had to uninstall DA2 and download and install the EADM version in order to help beta test Patch 1.02, which was a PITA, but I was willing to do it to help the BioWare devs. Ultimately, it is simply more convenient for me to have all my games in my Steam library instead of having to deal with three or four different digital download clients.

Yes, I suppose I should care, but I'm being honest here when I say that I care much more about my own personal convenience than whether GoG/CDProjekt makes more money.

Depends on your view on games/devs in general. Slim and I are dedicated to CD Projekt RED due to their excellent relationship between devs and fanbase, so of course people like us want the best for CD Projekt RED in thanks to creating excellent games and hopefully more in the future.

GoG requires no clients. You can use your browser to install the games. Just send the file wherever you want, and then install. Click the game icon on your desktop and play. Hell of a lot easier than when I dealt with Steam. Less space on my drive too.

Whatever. Enjoy the game. At a later date than everyone else. With DRM.

Wow, that's good news! I thought I would have needed to install another client.

I believe I'm stuck with Steam for TW2 because I pre-ordered back in December, but good info to know for future titles or some of the classics available on GOG.

Umm...gee, thanks for rubbing it in.

In all honesty, having DRM or NO DRM in games does not makes a difference. It will be pirated anyway no matter what DRM you have. Why bother and waste additional expenses onto DRM where it simply didn't work other than offend your legitimate customers?

Well some people like their achievements I like that Witcher 2 will use cloud saves. After losing all my games saves unexpectedly I still managed to have quite a number of games that had my latest saves because of Steam's cloud save. For a game like the Witcher 2 this could really be helpful.

I'm buying the Steam version and the physical Collector's Edition either way I was getting DRM and while I don't like drm it doesn't bother me.

I think the Witcher 1 potion crafting system was probably the best from any RPG and it sounds like it's been improved for W2

"This is one of those all-too-rare games where the PC’s technological superiority over its console fun-box cousins simply can’t be denied."

"There’s not too much signposting of sidequests."

"It’s a morally and politically complicated place,"

"Sword fighting is visceral and tactical – it’s a mix of player skill and quick thinking and character skill"

^This is what I like to hear.
