Love the characters. Ex. Foltest, with his five minutes or so of screen time, had more personality than all the dozens NPCs I've met so far in Skyrim.

I found his death in the prologue surprisingly poignant, even though I barely knew him and he was hardly a saint - he was actually implied to be a ruthless, very flawed man.
Great stuff.
If you want a good grounded back story from the characters, you should read the two first books (collections of short stories). The first, "The last Wish" has been translated and published in English. The second "The sword of destiny", has been translated to English only by Witcher fans and you have several different translations to choose from, in the Witcher forums.
The novels deal mainly with the character of Ciri, a young girl, scion to a kingdom, adopted by Geralt, with a very important role in the future of the witcher's world. As this character rarely is even mentioned in the games, I would say you dont NEED to read about her in order to play them, but the novels are great reading none the less...
