Skyrim's good, but it's no Witcher 2. I prefer the latter.

ME3 will be best SciFi RPG of 2012
Diablo3 best dungeon crawler RPG of 2012

:P

As for best game overall I don't think term can apply given each game does something better than the other.

If Prey 2 comes out in 2012 it might be best Scifi game. It looks sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet :P

If I have scorn for one title on that list its Diablo 3, simply for the crappy online connection DRM and the fact that Blizzard seems to be making it into an MMO.

I never played the first game. Will there be anything in Witcher 2 to recap the story for newcomers like myself? I see both games have the same main character

It's definitely impressive what the Prey team has shown off so far. It looks to be like a gritty darker game than say Mass Effect 3.

Wait there's gameplay footage for Prey 2 already?! :o

Or are we judging this purely from a cinematic...

There's been gameplay footage since like E3!! Maybe before.

Here is my favorite gameplay video I can find.

Diablo 3 = Random generated dungeons + truly insane amounts of loot... /drools <3

The only MMO few aspects I think Slim might be talking about is ofcourse the multiplayer aspect but then again they had that in Diablo 2 if I recall too. The other online element is the auction house where can buy and trade loot for either ingame currency or real life money. However like Slim mentioned Blizzard due to the auction house aspect are making it online only game (I think) but people who have tried it like reviewers in beta said it's not that bad even with not good connections like on trains using mobile internet they had very little problem except ofcourse going through tunnels.

Prey 2 is just standard FPS though isn't it? That doesn't appeal to me at all. DE:HR had RPG elements hence why I got it bit like the original DE and System Shock titles. I only ever buy FPS if they are FPS+RPG hybrids. Never buy FPS without that element myself. This means has to have dialogue choices, maybe branching story and lots of customisation which means more than just weapons. I couldn't stand Bioshock in the slightest due to lack of RPG elements and it's sticking to FPS only gameplay.

There are two genres of games I usually hate, medieval fantasy and pure science fiction. They feel either way too nerdy for my taste and lose me in references to other works of fiction in those veins, or they try too hard to feel "authentic" to their main crowd that the game doesn't feel like I can get through it. However, The Witcher 2 and Prey 2 seem to break that rule for me. The city in Prey 2 looks pretty amazing and kind of reminds me of what RAGE looks like but set in a cyberpunk city.

They are different games in terms of execution, you can't compare them in many fields and everyone has their own opinion.

Also on the topic of Diablo 3... eww NO. You know Blizzard is making it intentionally "bad" so that people won't cancel WoW subscriptions, and that they are going to milk it like all their other titles of recent. If you are excited, you will be even more disappointed, it looks like it might be good, if it came out 4 years ago.

Since Diablo III has been mentioned.....

I was fortunate enough to be selected for beta testing the other day and I am loving it so far. It's the best ARPG to be coming out since Diablo II.

There will be a digital comic included I believe, probably to familiarize players with the lore and what not. You don't need to start with the first game.

Also, Divine Divinity > Diablo 2.

Edit: just watched Ringo's link for Prey 2. It looks lik a mix of Deus Ex and MassEffect - in other words, it looks good. I especially liked the devs response on multiplayer. Spot on. One criticsm: the visor highlights important objects in the environment. My take on this mechanic, which has been heavily abused by RockSteady, is that it has serious potential to shortcut problem solving.  Detective mode is a mistake in the Batman games and anyone mimicing that mechanic may be getting lazy.

The devs have said there is customisation in the gadgets and weaponry that the character uses, but whether that extends into a conversation system, if there is one I'm not sure. I tend to be fairly picky about FPS, but the dev's are working with Bethesda on this one and said they were sticking to a single player storyline, no multiplayer fights etc. So, it gives me some hope that they focus heavily the SP and story. But, I don't know, until we find out more.

I am glad I am not the only person who is excited towards D3 coming out, the random generation of dungeons and insane amounts of loot fills me with child like glee. Brings me back to the old days of dungeons and dragons, heroquest, previous diablos and more. I love good old dungeon crawlers, the only downsides to the entire game I have seen is the online only DRM due to auction house but it's something I am happy to live with in this case and also the limitation of character creation using set characters did very much disappoint me but it is offset by the truly vast amounts of customisation via loot.

I have as much glee towards D3 coming out as I do about ME3.

Anyway's back to TW2 I guess topic wise. I plan on picking up the Dark Edition for friend as soon as pre-order bonuses are listed on sites selling the poduct. I have PC version so do not need the 360 one myself but my friend doesn't have decent PC so for her I will be getting her the DE version for 360. She especailly wants the medallion which she had previously tried finding on ebay but none were for sale for less than £50 at the time, now she can have it included with game and much more for only £60, which I'll be paying for due to it coming out one week before her birthday, so for her it's free.

:P

Don't worry I won't hold it against you.

I did not say it was the worst RPG of 2011 however because it wasn't by long shot, but just for me personally the most disappointing due to the hopes I had for it and did not even come close to reaching for myself (imho).

Upon watching Prey 2 video it did nothing for me, I must admit does not seem to peak any interest in myself for it. Neither does Syndicate or X-Com FPS titles though so I wouldn't take it to heart that I'm being overly mean towards it.

Oddly though I have a vast interest in Aliens Colonial Marines due to playing the original AvP (90's version) back in the old days and liking it (haven't played newer remake of AvP however due to poor review from my friends), plus prior to that the good old Genesis/MD Aliens titles and before that the Amstrad and Atari versions as well as the films have pushed my interest in that title up quite a bit even though it is not the type of game I generally buy (aka FPS needing to be RPG hybrids for me to care about them, think along lines of System Shock 1+2/Fallout 3+NV/Dues Ex 1+IW+HR).

Meh, only title that springs to mind from that developer is the Hard Reset title and that was not that epic (imho it's visually good but depth is lacking big time). If they had made it as deep and had some RPG elements like DE:HR then I would be impressed but they didn't, was just straight up plain normal shooter. So not sure how it is good news for Jan to switch but maybe switching will push them in a better direction (FWH).

Visually was great, depth and complexity such was lacking big time (imho) for me an FPS needs to be special these days and graphics alone do not come close to bridging that divide. If moving there can bring more depth and complexity to their titles (think along lines of plot branching, dialogue choices and consequences and vast character customisation which is far more than just what weapon use) then this is good news. It's a shame imho it could of been something really special if had left the confines of simply a normal FPS.

I'm convinced TW2 combat will not be popular on consoles and the article below is one of many to come IMO. There are a few facts about TW2's combat to consider:

1. Certain commands, at least on keyboard, are still unresponsive. This is mainly with hotkeys. You press them, nothing happens. And death soon follows.

2.  You can hold down parry with steel sword and counter instantly. Not possible with the silver sword, where you must release block key and press attack key, then press block again.  This is inconsistent and serves no purpose. It is a bug.

3. Many times when I parry close to the enemy, then I press attack, Geralt only swings the sword while standing in place - he doesn't leap at the enemy who is now out of range. But then sometimes he does. It's random...or bugged.

4. The one reliable aspect of combat in TW2 is potentially the most boring: passive buffs via alchemy. Will action oriented console players be patient enough for this element of the game?

Basically, TW2 combat, even after all the patches, is unfinished. Trust me I love it, but It still feels like it's in Beta. It is unpredictable and unresponsive. It's entirely possible to press a command/button multiple times, and watch Geralt stand there like a slab of meat doing nothing. This won't fly with console gamers familar with slick, high budget, highly responsive action titles. If TW2 is released on Xbox with the same input issues it has had  on PC, CDPR will be crucified. The console crownd will NOT be as forgiving as the PC fanbase has been. And trust me, the PC fans have been more than accommodating for CDPR on numerous issues regarding this game.

****.
I hope this won't affect future writing.

From the article:
“You always have to defeat the huge demon who wants to destroy the world,” he says. “Dungeons and Dragons are cool but it’s abused nowadays. It’s always about fighting the greater evil. In Witcher 2, all the conflict is human."
