I expect that recent "dark edition" has been all but sold out? I like having big boxes, online editions aren't so appealing.
Also, how viable is it to play a purely "mage" character?

Magic tree is the easiest one, but not the most satisfying. You'll end up using your swords anyway, but magic tree allows you to use your signs more instead of blocking and rolling.

Very viable. The magic tree is the most powerful, without a doubt. However, be sure to unlock the first couple talents in the swordsman tree; the talents being "Riposte" and one that increases your jump length. IMO they're damn essential to the game and should've been placed in the "Witcher" tree, which is basically the starting tree that gives you the essential talents.

Quen went from overpowered to barely useful, which is good.
It's basically gone in one of, at most, two hits from enemies, and should've been this way from the start, makes combat much more enjoyable.

You're also going to want to consider parrying from all directions, less 200% backstab, and expanded dodge roll under the swordsman tree. I'm not sure how viable it is to just stick to one tree in harder modes, as you'll tend to have points in at least 2 trees for balance in alchemy, swordsmanship, and signs.

What, really? From GoG.com? I had no problems after the initial flub with the pre-download.One_Sunny_Place wrote...

I'm sorry, it is. But I'm sure twitch combat is here to stay and they'll probably go further down the "you're going to die a lot" route, so rejoice.slimgrin wrote...

I didn't like it much, but prefer it to TW2 which really is button spamming.

Someone who sucks at a combat system is not one who understands it and someone who doesn't understand it can't pass judgement. Yes there is a certain ammount of reflex skill involved, so what? There's also a ****ton of stats to be considered, BOTH are crucialy important, you've obviously never played a game where it's actually ALL about reflex skill and nothing else.
And what the **** is wrong with a "twitchy" combat system? What that you dislike it? Sorry that's purely biased view and nothing more. Give me a good reason why TW2 combat is bad. That you consider a real challenge a chore that is exactly like work for you is not one. Others btw don't view it like that. I personally am bored as hell when a game's combat offers zero challenge and I don't play games to be bored.
Having good reflexes won't get you nowhere if you are a dumb idiot who doesn't know how to properly level up and equip Geralt.
Frankly, all I see when most complain of the combat system are just a bunch of players who are pissed the game requires skill to actually beat. I've seen so many people saying: Oh yeah it's just rolling to beat the game on Insane. No it ****ing isn't

If someone presents a good argument in favor of their opinion I will listen to it, and maybe even agree to it ( and I do agree with certain people about the flaws of the combat system, because they do exist ).
More to the point: If you hate the goddamn combat systems so much and hate dying and don't care one bloody bit about it as you then why don't you use a God mode mod? There's one out there, or you can use a trainer.

No it wasn't from GoG, it was from the regular Witcher website.
I'm not sure what it is, it doesn't report a problem or anything, the download just stops.

I don't care if someone dislikes the combat system. I do care when they claim it's badly designed because of their dislike. It's the same principle between saying ( for instance, since this one is brought up by a few people on TW forums ) "I dislike Letho winning the duel" and "Letho winning the duel is ****".
The former is a fine statement because it's your own personal subjective dislike of something in the game, the latter is just claiming that portion of the game is bad.
If someone is going to claim the combat is bad then they better have a good argument to back their statement.

Do you know why I rail against those who complain about the combat ( especially that it's too hard )? Because I do not ****ing want CDPR to make it easier. They've already removed Insane Difficulty from the Xbox 360 version. They've made the prologue a cakewalk affair and they did all these because people complained of the game being too hard.
The good thing they did however was nerfing Quen.
