I always wondered what all the hubub was regarding this game, but never got the chance to play it until recently. This has easily become of my favorite games of all time. Witcher 1 and Witcher 2 almost remind me of Earthbound and Mother 3 in terms of the differences between them. The original game was flawed, but unique and entertaining enough to make a name for itself. The sequel managed to improve the gameplay/storyline across the board, and feels far more satisfying.

Dark mode is (unsurprisingly) hard. It's relatively tame compared to Dark Souls and the like, but certain spots like fighting Letho the first time was a serious pain in the butt. The walkthrough reccomended trapping him with Yrden, but he seems highly resistant to it. I eventually Opted to Aard, and that did the trick. The quests are more memorable and hold better variety than many of the RPGs I've played. I'm looking at you, Skyrim.

I've only just gotten to Chapter 2, but I'm very impressed with this game. I'm definitely a fan.

Btw you should replay witcher 2 again, as depending on who you went with, the act 2 and beyond changes a LOT.

Like zeypher said you really need to replay the game again but choose someone else to side with. You'll get a completely different perspective of the story and learn much more about Saskia, Elhart, Henselt and pretty much every other major character. You picked a great time to get into the game because the SDK is a long way off so at least you have the main game to play.

It takes two playthroughs playing both paths to truly see how big of a gem this game is and how beautifully crafted its story is.

Thanks for the advice, I'll make sure to give it a second go. Like KnightofPhoenix pointed out, it's pretty obvious early on that a lot of effort was put into the narrative.

Oh man there is so much going on behind the scenes it can leave you abit confused but you'll definitely appreciate the work CDProjekt put into crafting something so amazing especially the politics.

If you're trying Dark mode I'd strongly suggest skipping the dark gear sets as they upset the balance of the game. The standard gear you can craft or what the game gives you is strong enough, provided you stick with alchemy. Siding with both factions for two playthroughs may seem counter-intuitive from a role playing standpoint, but within each path you can find your own moral stances, and it's the only way to experience the whole story.

There's a lot of detail and subtelty here and there, and it took me 4 playthroughs to grasp the story fully (or at least I think so).

When you finish both playthroughs (or if you don't mind spoilers), check out my articles that analyze parts of the story in depth.

Glad to hear that you're enjoying TW2, Dom! It's a marble of a game, with a well brancing plot and real choices and consequences, and great characters. I'm certain you'll love the second playthrough even more than the first.

I've finished the first playthrough, and it's easily made my top 10 RPG list of all time. The revamped combat system feels like a healthy mix between Dark Souls and Assassins Creed.

Agreed on the Roche/Iorveth choice, you really need 2 playthroughs to get a grasp of the entire story. It reminds me a great deal of the Shadow Thieves/Bodhi choice from BG2: Shadows of Amn, but taken to a far greater threshold.

I thought the same thing I had after playing PS:T - We're not going to see a game this ambitious and polished in a very, very long time.

There are few games which give me a feeling of pure satisfaction after i finish them. Witcher 2 is on of them, after every playthrough pure feeling of satisfaction. The last game i remeber which invoked this feeling for me was VTM: Bloodlines.

Hopefully TW3.

Which path did you pick?

It's an above average game, for sure. But I for one am a bit dissapointed about the interactive movie+arcade direction the game has taken. And all the streamlining.

The mechanics of part 1 left a lot to be desired for sure and overall part 2 has a much better, more coherent and more epic story. But overall it feels less like an cRPG, more like a story driven action game. Part 1 had a much more dense, memorable atmosphere with distinct locations. Loved pretty much all of them, though Vyzima became repetetive after a while (still a far larger town then anything W2 offers). But the village, fields, finally lakes... all were very different, with a unique feel to them. Being knighted by the Lady of the Lake was a moment of pure awesome... can't remember any such scene in W2... or such a change of pace for that matter.
The game is also significantly smaller, there are less enemies. Far less significance of knowing your enemies (buying lore books was the main expense in part 1!), simplified alchemy, with no secondary effects. Oh and the QTEs... whoever though it was a good idea to include them in the game and make the "boss" fights gimmicky?

In general I vastly prefer numercal game systems to arcade games. Even don't mind turn-based, if the system is good.

Haplose, I agree with you, that's my general feeling on TW2 as well. The story being superior counterweights it in my mind, though. I liked TW1's story as well, but it is so rare to find a layered, intricate politcal narrative in a game, with intelligent dialogue that can be poetic at times. For that, TW2 is special.

I wouldn't call the boss fights gimmicky especially since you can disable QTE's. Look at the Operator, that is one wicked and tactical battle. As for being 'arcadey' well, I prefer the term twitch combat and I'm sure that's the style they will stick with for TW3 - an improved version of the free-flow combat style.

Unrelated, they updated their blog. I don't often style my hair, but when I do...

TW2 had more quality content than the first. In terms of enemies, in TW1 you could kill everythign with group style plus igni on hard difficulty without any potion. In TW2, it actually forces you to prepare, use potions and grenades, and use different tactics against different enemies.

Drinking vodka with Letho, to me, surpasses all moments in TW1 (and all games in general).

The best moment in TW1 for me was when my Geralt and Siegfried were disemboweling Yaevinn and his pack of Elven rats.

The best moments in 2 were of course reuniting with Siegfried, him interacting with Roche and later the group marching off as the three amigos.

If you play your cards right, there's some sneaky ways to gain allies. Right now I'm in Flotsam and ready to visit the elven baths with Triss. She's waiting by the waterfall. Instead of meeting her I opted to finish up the Malena side quest. I lied to the town guards so I could deal with Malena myself. She of course says to meet her...by the waterfall. When the Scoiatel warriors try to ambush me, I see some of them going up in flames. At first I don't realize why but Triss is launching fireballs at them from a distance. I start kiting and let her pick them off one by one. Hilarious.

Indeed. Pick your sword, pick your stance, and spam Aard.

But overall it feels less like an cRPG, more like a story driven action game.

That's likely why I enjoyed it more. :P I was attracted to the narrative of cRPGs like PS:T and PS:T over the mechanics. I find it hard to enjoy the D&D Style combat.

Oh and the QTEs... whoever though it was a good idea to include them in the game and make the "boss" fights gimmicky?

Yeah, that was a bad move. Boxing was a dissapointment this round.

Which path did you pick?

Originally Roche, then Iorveth.

I enjoyed TW1's combat despite it being ****** easy. TW2's is objectively better but CDPR still hasn't refined the controls to the level of finesse that something like Ninja Gaiden 2 or Bayonetta has.

If you think TW2 controls are bad try Dark Souls...you will learn to love TW2 MK controls after that experience.

Well yea Witcher 2's controls are better than Dark Souls but they still aren't great but I play with a 360 controller so no problem for me.
