So for a game that cost under Ten million to make...anything more will just be profit. They have covered costs

CD Projekt will be fine.
The lion's share of their business actually comes from the publishing and distribution side of things. Largest PC games distributor in Europe I believe. Then there's GOG, etc etc.
I remember reading that their distribution and publishing side gets around $50 million annually in profit..
^This.
So in many respects they are kind of in the same boat as Valve in that they aren't just a developer as they have other ventures giving them revenue.
That said, wasn't the claim of all DLC being free sort of stipulated with the possibility of expansions and such?

Yes. It was clear that preorder items do not count towards the free DLC, but any DLC they release will be free not including full blown expansions. Which means they probably won't release all that much DLC and will instead opt for the full blown expansion. I totally prefer expansions to DLC, so this news is great! (providing the game is good)Brockololly wrote...

Bryy has a point. I've long wondered where they get their funding, and they obviously aren't hurting for production values. Actually, I read they made the game for a paltry 8 million. As a point of reference, GTA4 cost around 100 million to make. I don't know how CD red can do it.
As far as dlc goes, remember, that's a loose definition. They may well charge for certain types of dlc. I'm more likely to buy an expansion myself.
Salaries and cost of living are lower there, so the numbers are not going to be as high, it's all relative.

Something like 27-28 Million in Polish currency which is 8 million Dollars. Found that out after someone suggested DA2 budget was too small to make it a good game....right Witcher 2's budget is small by Bioware/EA's standard.

CDP has about covered its costs

Posté 14 mai 2011 - 04:50
Everyone's saying this, but living costs in mainland Europe aren't tenfold cheaper than the US or UK. I think CDP simply have a very tight development team, and have made all the right calls when deciding where to spend the money and where not.vilnii wrote...
The cost of making games is probably cheaper in Poland.
I mean, take Oblivion... how much do you suppose they spent getting Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean to voice some lifeless badly written characters? I wouldn't mind betting it cost enough that a different studio could have financed a whole game on it.
So much of the games industry hangs on false promise, big marketting budgets, big marketting gimmicks (such as guest voice actors), and various other huge money-sinks with the soul intention of filling your head with hype and racking up sales.
It's so refreshing to me that occasionally, very very occasionally, a company like CDP can show that true artistry, craft, and plain quality can shine through all that crap, and that it doesn't require a Hollywood marketting budget and gimmicks to do it.

Although there are some costs, I'm pretty sure it's not as expensive as many companies are charging. For instance, that DA2 item pack was probably cheaper to make than the server costs to upload it to customers.Bryy_Miller wrote...

I'm a bit worried about the free DLC. The game cost $10 million.
You think they chopped it? ( the game, that is)
No, but I am worried they won't be able to sustain themselves with free DLC. I mean, we don't like it, but there is a reason why DLC costs money in today's gaming industry. Not everyone is Valve.
You don't make a game for $60 and then sell DLC for $5 that is just a few items. That's not 1/12 of a game. Companies like Bioware are reaping huge profits by releasing DLC for $5-$9.

BAD ASS
I've become such a fanboy... ****.
The hardest part of finally getting this game for me is going to be what decisions to make on the first playthrough. It's going to be interesting to see how it unfolds.

Completely agreed with you. Item pack DLC#1, 2... N.. lol these should be free in all honesty. For few items you are charged which takes little effort to produce them. They should be IN the game to start with.
Sadly people failed to see their beloved developer has sided with the devi... ahem

This game just feels impossibly sublime in today's gaming industry, where everything is supposed to be mainstream, bland and 'for everyone'. It's hard to grasp how BioWare, at the same time seems to just nod and accept defeat without even a fight. DA2 to me was as if they just gave up and threw in the towel - I didn't detect a single ounce of ambition or resolve in that game. Seems like they didn't even consider truly answering to the challenge set by competitors such as Witcher 2.

But i've seen most of the trailers and also combat.. it's promising though.
