Carver vs Aveline vs Bethany? (update)

UPDATE: Now, according to the very gracious Gashington, here, the very scene that's screencapped first at the bottom has Aveline and Bethany there, but no Carver. Varric is supposed to be there, too, but I guess he's cut off right under the camera (zing!). Which is delightful for speculation....and if Aveline is the one we must pick between, that probably means she's not a LI.

The screencap below doesn't reveal who the third or fourth party members are; at this point, Isabela is not in your party. Assuming that Varric is there, as well, this would mean Aveline or Bethany should be somewhere. It might also be possible to come out with any combination of two people, which would explain the last screenshot on the page.

It's worth noting this player was playing as a rogue.
_____________
So, after having a bit of a chat here, Nic-V brought up that Carver might be available only to Mage Hawke's and Bethany to Warrior or Rogue Hawke's.

The more I thought about it, the more it made sense to me--in every demo we've heard a breakdown of thus far, mages haven't been playable. In every demo, it's reported back that Carver inevitably dies, and you have no control over the situation.

The ever devious David Gaider told us that's what happened in their playthroughs, at least. The rest of us sat wondering, then why has no one reported back saving him?

In the recent Rise to Power trailer, we can see Carver in the background with Isabela. This was immediately noted as meaning that Carver can survive past the prologue--but how? It was also noticed that in some leaked gameplay footage saw no Mama Hawke in the background talking to Flemeth. Some of us assumed that meant we had to make the choice between the two, despite never being offered that choice in the game, and despite Mama Hawke being a sort of NPC mechanic like Yeoman Chambers (nix stripping), collecting your mail and telling you what you needed to do and when.

When I went through a frame-by-frame of the Rise to Power trailer, I found this:

That certainly seems like a twisted staff on Hawke's back--with Carver in the background. Also, Isabela looks really pretty there. What do you think?

Nightcobra brought up this particular instance:

Both Carver and Bethany running away in what appears to be Kirkwall with no Mama Hawke, and Hawke in peasant's garb with no weapon. Most interesting...

EDIT: We see Hawke in that same get-up doin' some Murder Knifin', if that's of any relevance to anyone...

There's also this shot of Bethany, Varric, and Warrior Hawke.

in the trailer there's also a moment where you can see both carver and bethany running along a corridor.

Ah, yes...good point. What to make of that? Is that we pick between Mama Hawke and Carver? Hmm...

I think I'd be pretty pissed about missing a character just because I rolled a particular class.

A forced death based on my class would, for lack of a better word, suck. I wouldn't mind a Ashley/Kaiden moment though.

An interesting find, and a good point for a heated discussion.

As for the speculation itself, I really do hope you are right. I almost never play as a mage, and having an exclusive party member might actually make me to.

Is anyone sort of curious what that red mark we keep seeing on Bethany's hand is?

I hope we can sacrifice Aveline to save Carver, I will be devastated if Bethany dies if I'm a Mage, I wanted to spend time talking about our spellcasting techniques & compare notes on how to fireball effectively. etc.

I would have to see a picture to guess properly, but shooting in the dark I would say it would identify her as an apostate or a mage

We see it here, on both hands.

Oh my God I hope nothing happens to Bethany if you're a mage, because I'm choosing Hawke to be a mage but I love Bethany to bits so far. I don't care about the mother, so I hope it's between mom and Carver. I'll choose Carver.

(I have an only child complex, playing people with siblings warms my heart, see)

I think it is part of the outfit. Looks like fabric to me.

It's part of her sleeve I think. Like on figure skating leotards, with the little finger loop, you know?

Well, it's better than the alternative of what I was going to say. It's one of those magician scarfs that you pull out of your sleeves.

Well when we discussed Garrett's face mark I voted for Nutella and it turned out to be bloodmagic. To show that I can learn from mistakes I will say bloodmagic this time.

The second picture might be a flashback to Lothering. Given all three of them are in "peasant garb" It would seem odd to me that the story would just open up with all of them fighting Daarkspawn on the run. If there isn't a cinematic portion at the start of the game I expect at least some flashbacks that flesh out what happened a bit.

Though it could be that Hawke just removed his armor once he got at Kirkwall, expecting to not need it anymore.

That's what I thought, but it runs pretty clearly under her sleeve to me (or do I have vision problems?), and it doesn't actually touch her finger. Plus, there's a bit of a line and a space between the triangle, not just a whole red piece.

I'm pretty sure they have retooled the Lothering section to include Carver's potential survival. I know some people did get to play that demo as a mage and I'm sure they would have noticed the change as Bethany has been the most widely advertised companion other than (maybe) Varric, and now Isabela. Even if it was decided by class it just seems too unsubtle? The way the scene plays out there should be no way Hawke's class should be able to change the outcome.

I'm going with them having changed the Lothering escape fairly significantly and Carver's survival either being dependant on some completely new variable (is he present in any shots of Aveline within Kirkwall for instance?) or it's a choice between him and Mama Hawke.

Now I think about it I could totally see it being some dark early choice where you lose Aveline but keep Carver. In my opinion Beth is going to play an important role in the plot, ala Morrigan or Alistair from Origins.

Notably only Carver has a weapon--Bethany doesn't. I would assume it's because she's a mage and shouldn't go traipsing around with a big ole staff (Ser Bryant being only slightly suspicious of a mage Hawke in Circle Robes, a glowing nimbus of blood magic, and a pointy, evil-looking darkspawn staff comes to mind).

So perhaps that's why Hawke isn't equipped? He's a mage, too?
