Seriously, whose idea was it to make the player mash in some button combo to recover artifacts? What the heck? This has got to be the most lame mini-game. I played ME2 before ME and I must say, this first one seems much more like a chore to play than the second. I guess I'm just baffled as to why I would have to push buttons to retrieve an artifact. I understand for decryption, but this?

Personally, I thought planet-scanning in ME2 was much worse. The problem I had with ME1 was I found it strange that Shepard would be wandering all over the galaxy in search of Turian insignia and the writings of asari matriarchs while Saren is presumably closing in on the location of the conduit.

I'd have to agree with you Godbee on that. I personally never spent the time actively searching for them but did so passively. Whenever I by chance saw one I took it. But I would never spend the time to actually get them all.

You must be playing the console version of ME1. Us PC players have to negotiate some kind of maze to retrieve artifacts. As well as scan minerals. Bizarre, I agree.
