I've just finished the broken circle and i accidently wandered back into where you started the quest and a templar locked the door behind me. Does anyone know how to get out without starting a new game?

I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean that you reached the top floor and did what you had to do up there? You have to talk to a certain person (trying to keep this spoiler free) in that top chamber in order to go back and see the Templars at the bottom and resolve the quest.

ive been to the top of the tower three times already there isnt anybody up there and there is a templar on the first floor.... the one you saved from Uldred and he just says he wishes he was off to go fight the darkspawn... and yes ive completed the main quest

Did you side with the mages or the templar? Did Irving survive? He's the one you generally have to talk to.
