News to me.

Seriously though it depends on the kind of sword.

Sure, with short-swords you could do that. But even then the animation would be different. That would mean, more time and money and you know, they have only limited resources. ;)

Yes.  Heck, fencing foils don't even have an edge (granted they're not really "weapons" per se) and even heavy swords that you use with two hands have a point so that you can stab with them.  You move one hand halfway up the sword and use it like a spear.  (I think Hawke even tries on this move in the Destiny trailer, which is pretty cool.)

That's not to say that you can't find swords that don't have a point, but they are comparatively rare as you never know in a melee when having an extra pointy bit will help you out.  Heck, some people even used to sharpen the quillions on the hilt and have a point projecting out of the pommel, so committed were they to having a pointy bit available to them no matter the conditions.

Some swords like an Epee were designed to do nothing but stab. That being said real rogue use bucklers

Wasn't this said to be an art direction issue? I could easily see mid - short weapons in used by rogues, since they're getting rid of the whole armour penetration stat and as such it's not a matter of mechanics purely to do with art.

I'm not a massive fan of dual daggers though, but I do believe in some footage maybe the german ea showcase thing, hawke had two shortswords, either that or they were massive daggers, either way i can live with that.

If I had to guess, it seems like they really want to push the whole "all rogues are stealthy ninja assassins!" type thing, so limiting the rogues to daggers or more concealed type weapons when dual wielding might makes sense. But as far as wielding a dagger and sword though, from the last podcast and looking at the inventory I got the impression that the dual wield weapons will only be used as a pair- so you wouldn't be able to mix and match.

I'm still bitter they got rid of the dual wield warrior though.. >:(

Peter Thomas said this is not the case.

Rogues have always been stealthy ninja assassins. Hardly a recent concept.

Well, it was said that even if you equip single weapon then if your character has dual-wield combat style the game will automatically equip generic weapon in your other hand. As i understand it that's because the animations "require" weapons in both hands or you wind up trying to stab and parry with empty hand.

Not sure what that means exactly for appearance of the dual wield weapon types, though.

Amongst other things. Limiting them to just that one narrow archetype is well, limiting.

The older term, 'dual wielding,' was much clearer. Meaning you could use two of any single handed weapon.

Duelist:"from Latin duellum, archaic and literary form of bellum ‘war’, used in medieval Latin with the meaning ‘combat between two persons’, influenced by dualis ‘of two’."

But then language evolves and gets mangled. Dexter meant the right, sinister meant left, with ambidextrous suggesting both sides are right-handed. (The left side was associated with evil in medieval times, hence righteous.)

So I'd like an ambidextrous rogue. And if it's restricted to daggers, I hope these are very long daggers. I could easily see sword and dagger as a good combination, given the size of some of the daggers in DA:O

Just to make this clear...rogues can use a bow or only daggers, right? Not a sword and a dagger, or two swords?

In the dev answers thread, it was said that rogues use what they refer to as "dual wield weapon"  The exact look of these weapons when equipped is up to the art department -- so the art department could choose such weapon to look like pair of daggers, but in theory they could also choose to make an item that looks like sword+dagger, or pair of axes or whathaveyou.

But its not done with a design change. If you equip a one-hander and a dagger, you'll fight in a different way as when you're wielding two daggers. That said, the animations have to change, too. That's the reason, why I doubt, that they will allow you to wield other weapons than daggers.
You dont stap with a sword and you dont cleave with a dagger.

However, it would be really sad, because that would mean, that one-handed axes, swords and maces would be restricted to tankwarriors, boring.

I'm willing to bet there will be plenty of slashing going on with a dagger with the new rogue animations.

Yes but that's not what Brockololly meant, he's afraid you will only be able to equip pairs of daggers. As in 1 item = a pair of daggers.

also in isabela's GUI screenshot i believe we could see 2 slots for weapons and not just one.

I was hoping to see a single weapon skill tree (which, in my mind, is *much* more suited to the concept of 'duelist' than dual wielding) but then Mr. Thomas shows up and tells us that they didn't include such a proficiency since...since...there was nothing special to it that they could add. Or something to that end. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Disappointing, but so is life anyway.

Alas.

Well I haven't heard an official "no swords for rogues" yet, but just to be on the safe side I'll begin lowering my hopes at once.

Except the rogue's that use bows and crossbows from a distance? I don't like the idea of not being able to use swords/axes etc. either but they are hardly pushing the whole class into one archetype.

Also as others have posted it is known as far as weapons go equiping people works the same way as Origins, two slots and all.

It should also be noted that the weapons that Rogues equip in DA2 have not been simplified to choosing a set or pair of weapons to equip that just take up one slot, and that they still are separate main hand and off hand slots with each weapon as its' own item, as far as we can discern from the equipment screen UI for Isabella.

If a rogue CAN use a sword, then do they share the sword weapon pool with Sword+Shield Warriors? Or are they "dagger/rogue weapon" classified mechanically and thus off-limits in regards to the concept of cross class equipment? These are the things I'd like clarification on, if you folks at BioWare are willing to let us know, or even have these details nailed down yet.

Rogues are armed only with their wits and a keen sense of how to play Rock, Paper, Scissors. You should see some of the footage when an ogre loses a game, it's head totally explodes in a shower of kittens and rainbows. Amazing!

Not allowing dual wield sword and dagger would be unnecessarily restrictive.

I'm not one of those offended by little things breaking my immersion. I would be fine in the name of loot variety, if they just make a long sword look like a short sword, for animation purposes(when equipped on a rogue), if that was the only thing stopping them from letting me equip my rogues with more than daggers. I could live with that, a lot more easily than live with an entire game of only being able to use daggers.

I guess axes would still be out of the question, I really like the looks of Sigrun using dual axes.

I agree. But if BW has decieded that a Warrior can not use a Bow/Crossbow, than it could be possible that they restrict the Rogue as well. All for the sake of "class Uniqness". :?

Why don't they let all weapon styles be used, & leave the class abilities restricted to classes? All this restrictiveness isn't good if a want a rogue with a shield I should be able to play a rogue with a shield. If I want to play a warrior with a bow I want to play a warrior with a bow.

Well, wouldn't a duelist in the strictest sense have one one-handed sword?  I mean, with nothing in the off hand?  For balance?

You see, it's this type of logic that takes the fun out of games.
