Obviously they're the hazmat suit Yeti things with mustaches we see in Varric's screencap. (Which are actually probably dwarves, by the way.)

I think whatever they are, they are small, smaller than even dwarves. because they are things that live on an island, and creatures that live on islands tend to be smaller than ones living on the mainland. And also, it's a tropical setting, so being tiny makes sense I think.
Hence the "aboriginal halflings" thing. And it's true, islanders do tend to be smaller.

The fact that they think of themselves a certain way doesn't mean that other people won't feel a need for a descriptive term just for them. This is more a quirk of language than anything--in the Qunari tongue, the connotations may be such that you can freely refer to people as "Qunari" without assigning them a certain physical morphology. It's like how (I think) an Italian would never say "So and so has a mustache", they'd specify *type* of mustache. An actual Italian may correct me on that, but you get the idea.
And Sten refers to Qun-following elves as "elves" when he's speaking Common, so it's quite likely just a translation issue, and as a fluent bi-lingual Sten's probably aware of the deficiency, it's just that referring to Tal-Vashoth as "Qunari" got his goat (just as calling him a "Qunari" gets Armaas' goat) just as, to an Objectivist, calling Ayn Rand a "Libertarian" is certain to get up their shorts even if they know you don't really know what you're talking about.
This might explain a little maybe.

I'm sure its been brought up before but what exactly does the name Qunari actually denote? Are you considered a Qunari if you are simply a follower of the Qun? So would a human in Rivain that follows the Qun be technically considered a Qunari?
Or are you only a Qunari if you have the whole 8 foot tall, horned giant thing going on?
I guess what I'm saying is, if the Qunari name is simply affixed to anyone who follows the Qun, what were the race of really tall, horny beings called before the Qun?
"Qunari" literally translates to, "People of the Qun." To the Qunari, a human or an elf who follows the Qun is a Qunari. It's only the people outside the Qun who think "Qunari" means "8 foot tall, horned giant."

Edit: On a sidenote, is there any distinction in the eyes of the Qunari between the Riviani and other people of Thedas, or are all simply unenlightened fools? Since the Riviani have their own "psuedo-qun".
To the Qunari they're all bas-- even the Rivaini, though they at least are bas that are basalit-an and thus worthy of dealing with. The Rivaini have incorporated elements of the Qunari philosophy into their religion, but while the rest of Thedas might consider the Rivaini sympathizers to the Qunari they clearly do not follow the Qun and thus are still not Qunari in any way, shape or form.

WIN. A brief cameo of Deekin would make my day. So long as it's sufficiently brief and not stupid. Even better would be to run across a Tal-Vashoth named Valen, a Fex named Deekin, and two elves named Aribeth and Nathyrra standing around arguing while they wait for their boss to get back or some such.

The 'it's bestiality!' philosophy is bull****. Furries aren't attracted to animals. They are attracted to humans/humanoid species with (clearly visible, granted) animalistic traits.
It's a peculiar attraction, sure, but noone is forcing you to watch it, so why go out of your way to say you think it's disgusting? The only thing that accomplishes is putting more hate on the internet, and, at least to me, coming off as a bit of a d*ck.
If their desires don't hurt you in any way, why would you attack them?
Sorry for the rant, I'm just tired of this sort of BS targetted at people who are different than the norm, just because they're different.

I really don't get furry hate.
I 'get' it.
It's no different than PC users who claim that people who play on XBox are 'konsole kiddies,' or my friend who says in utter seriousness 'Republicans hate poor people.' In the last 24 hours, I've heard a fanfiction writer say they sneer at erotic fiction writers and a devout trekkie talk about the stupidity of those who watch anime.
People, in general, want to feel superior to other groups. 'People who find anthromorphic figures attractive' is an easy enough group because they're small but visible and sexual desire is involved, which makes it titillating.

Well, sure. There's people who are insecure about their own sexuality/choice of gaming platform/political affiliation/etc and make up stupid crap about the 'other' to make themselves feel better, but there's also people who genuinely believe the stupid stuff they're slinging around, despite it having no basis in actual fact.
People who throw stones at homosexuals because it is 'an abomination and needs to be purged' don't do so purely because they want to feel better than non-straights.
I guess my main gripe is that it's completely irrational. It's made up bull and people buy it. And it's a great part of what's wrong in this world.
