I bought Mass Effect 2 (Collectors Edition).. with out never playing the
first one. Well a deal came around and it worked out so I only paid 6
or so USD for Mass Effect.

I played though and beat Mass Effect 2 in under 23 hours.

Well I was playing it I told my friends what a great game it was.

Then the time of the truth..

It
was like I got punched in the bloody #^%ing mouth. As soon literally as
soon as I made my character and was able to walk around I realized how
horrid Mass Effect 2 was.. I  got hooked on the leveling system and the
Equipment.. and I'm glad I dont have to pick though 8 or 9 different
people.. An mass effect makes it obvious which people are good at what.
I liked all the abilities for each class and every weapon typed can be
used.. and no ammo :D

I also loved the massive levels with almost no
loading screens.. What happened why does mass effect 2  so simple my
grandma can play it.. and watered down? An I had to pay more for it?!?!?
Ok bioware why did you not just release MAss effect 2 as an expansion?! That would have been more ideal..
Maybe Mass effect 3 could be an expansion.. but not like a expansion.. more like a whole other game.. just installed over the old.. keeping and growing off the old content, which also would keep the DLC I paid for around in the first one though the 2nd.  If Mass Effect 3 dont get a high review score Im opting out on buying.

Well there's something I don't read every day. Nice to hear you're enjoying the original! I miss the reduced quantity of loading screens and larger leveling system myself.

I don't know why, and I don't think I want to know why, but Mass Effect has a charm that ME2 doesn't have. ME2 is still a hell of a lot of fun, but it's more mainstream and lowest common denominator in it's target market and approach.

Basically it's aimed more at people who play Halo, Call of Duty and the like. That's a vast generalization of course, but I think the point is valid.

Does it make you feel big and manly having to sort through tons of useless crap and driving up 90 degrees hills? You feel like a genius adding adding a few extra skill points?

ME1 was a watered down RPG that didn't appeal to RPG elitists nor shooter fans. ME2 fixed that mistake, and is now one of the highest rated games ever, and has a higher user score than ME1 on EVERY site.

ME1 wasn't some complex game. Go play some oldschool hardcore cRPGs if you get off on stuff like that, but as sales have shown complex =/= fun.

I know what you mean. For myself,  ME1 felt more grounded to reality while ME2 came across like a crazy action movie with emphasis on character development.

 Okaaaay...let's recap
  • You like extremely huge inventories filled with useless upgrades. Check.
  • You don't like a variety in squadmates. Check ?
  • You somehow decided that the maps in ME1 are bigger than those of ME2 ? Check.
  • You liked elevators. Check.
  • You didn't like the exclusion of the horrid inventory. Check.
You have the right to have an opinion of your own, but I see some flaws in your logic there. ME2 as an expansion of ME1 ? Watered down ? Because there is no inventory ? Gimme a break.

I actually think that if Bioware tried to fix them, elevators could work much better. But no, you see, it's important to listen to the community, who as QA and Game Development experts  are always right.

ME was definitely more grounded in reality, which must be a tricky thing to achieve considering the subject matter. ME2 indroduced far too much that in my opinion should be kept to generic high grossing Hollywood films. Super hero films in particular.

There's more than a hint of Iron Man to certain armour and some of the outfits have come direct from the pages of comic books or their big screen counterparts.

There are many little things that may go unnoticed at first but when put together change the tone and feel of the second game in ways that I'm not too fond of. Still a cracking game though, but the direction of Mass Effect as a whole hasn't quite gone as I'd expected or hoped.

"Grounded in reality"? The game where you have visions that lead you all around the galaxy, and stuff like a giant plant monster and evil space cuddlefish?

When I said "Grounded in reality" I didn't mean it was exactly like real life, only that it was more realistic than ME2.

It's not so much about actual gameplay complexity, it's more about the subtleness, ambiance and charm that is very much lacking in ME2. ME2 feels a little bit to streamlined and pop culture-ish compared to the original. It essentially lacks that feeling of vastness and granduer if you know what I mean. Things like exploration got replaced by the linear "kill everything that moves" missions, elevators got replaced by constant loading screens,  and your squadmates can run around half naked in hazzard evniroments instead of having a proper armor and helmet equiped. It's things like these that break immersion, ambiance and overall fell of the game.
And don't get me wrong, ME1 had a lot of issues and most of them got fixed in the sequel, but too many things got completelly cut-out or they were replaced by some fairly useless or silly streamlined versions of it. I personally think if BioWare can strike a fine ballance between the two for their next ME game, it could be one of the biggest sci-fi rpg masterpieces to date and maybe one of their best creations ever.

That's not what I meant. I said ME was more grounded in reality than ME2, which it is. The first game is less fantastical than the second, although both are clearly unrealistic in many, many ways.

You must not read the forums everyday then.  This forum is choked with people who have expressed in no uncertain terms that they liked ME1 better.  The fact that the "Disappointment" thread is so popular is attributable to this.  You see someone comparing the two all the time, to the point that it has gotten tiresome.

Personally, ME2 was an improvement over the original in almost every way.  The only thing that was worse was the story, and then it was only slightly worse.  My opinion.

Meh, I like ME1 much better for several reasons. ME2 is overrated IMO and I do not feel like arguing that at the moment.

I also find it funny how the people who defend ME2 always trashtalk ME1 and don't do anything else.

Hmmmm. Can't shake the feeling that one of the old school haters got bored and simply decided to post as a newbie "just discovering how much ME2 is the suxorz compared to ME1!!!." Guess he just felt the need to bolster their numbers.

ME2 has too much comic-book superhero stuff and other related silliness, too small levels and a lack of wide open spaces, too many team members, a story with no focus, unromantic romance scenes and a protagonist who had mutated into a dumb and overbearing super-action-hero. The only improvement I really care for in ME2 are the dialogue scenes and cutscenes and the more varied sidequest locations, even though they are disappointingly small. It's all in all still a great experience, but some of ME1's epicness and spacey beauty has been lost, in spite of the improved graphics of most locations.

I am really getting sick and tired of this "Shepard isn't whiny/emotional enough" nonsense. The crew already has enough emotional issues.

The only new "action-hero" thing was Shepard's like of dramatic jumps.

Only thing ME1 has over ME2 is the open areas. Generally, ME1 does feel a lot more "open" both inside and ouside. Oh, and it has liara side boob.

I think they also went a little overboard in streamlining the inventory in ME2, just a bit. Somewhere between ME1's inventory and ME2's would be preferable for ME3.

I think it was.. and I'm glad. I used to only play those games. Tried Mass Effect 1 and hated it! Then ME2 came and I tried it at my friends for the hell of it, started liking it.. I liked how it felt a little more like Gears of War. So I kept playing it, played the 1st one again to know the story.. and now, ME1 and ME2 are like the only games I play... my absolute favorite games.. even sold my original ME2 to buy the Collector Edition. So I'm glad BioWare did ME2 this way.. it got me in to the best series ever and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Now, I like ME1 enough that BioWare can go and make ME3 with a mixed of both ME2 and ME1. I'm already saving money for the "Uber Collectors Edition" of ME3.
