Considering this is the OT forum this thread is very OT.

Yes, I understand that a majority people of people in Canada speak English but why choose that flag for the language?   The flag should obviously be the UK flag considering that is where the language hailed from.  If not England than it should be the American flag considering it is the largest English speaking country on Earth with probably with around 250 million plus fluent speakers.  Not a slap on Canada because I believe it is a great place, but for a country where there is two national anthems, it seems wrong to use the Canadian flag for the English language.

USing this logic why not use the Canadian flag for the french language as well?   :pinched:

Why not look up the home city for Bioware's main offices?  Easy enough to do!

I understand that bioware and its parent company are both Candian, but
that does not change the fact that I believe that the flag should be a
Union Jack considering that is where the language came from.

Well there's the part where Canadian, American and... English English are all kind of different.

to a point.  For instance, If Bioware's office was headquartered in Quebec instead of Alberta would it be ok to make the French Language flying a Canadian flag?

This is a silly, petty topic. Is it not enough that as the result of our empire, 1/6th's of the worlds population can speak English as their first language. Isn't that enough for English national pride? Do we really have to kick up a fuss over a 25x25 pixel icon for choosing a language on a Canadian developers website? It's really not a big deal at all.

I disagree. Most colonies use their own flag for "English" as well. It's just because there aren't all that many Canadian developers.

There is a vast, vast difference between French Canadians and the French. Culturally, mostly, but also the language.

Bioware is a Canadian company. Maybe that is why they use the Canadian flag?

Actually, it would. Confuse the hell out of a lot of people (including a lot of us Canadians), but it would be okay.

What difference does it make? We've had to put up with english being represented by an American flag on so many sites, and Bioware wanted to celebrate the fact that they are Canadian and do something different.  Why is this a problem? Image IPB

Bioware is proudly Canadian and, therefore, they wanted to use the Canadian flag instead of one that doesn't represent them. It's national pride that they're not afraid to show... I can't believe there's even a complaint for this.

Well for those that want the Union Flag to represent the language, (not the Union Jack - which is flown on ships of the Royal Navy), take heart n the fact that Canada is a sovereign state within the Commonwealth of Nations who's status as a Commonwealth Realm still has Elizabeth II as its queen.

Full title:

Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom,
Canada and Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the
Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith

&  in the interests of parity, in French:

Elizabeth Deux, par la grâce de Dieu Reine du Royaume-Uni, du Canada
et de ses autres royaumes et territoires, Chef du Commonwealth,
Défenseur de la Foi

It should be the English flag not the UK's, if you wanna be specific.

Bioware is canadian. Canadian probably speak a slightly different language than UK or USA. For exemple, in belgium/switzerland they have different word for numbers 90 and 70 than in france (with some others words), that's why we don't always choose france flag for language choice in some occasion.

They used their language for the game and the forum. So it's canadian flag. Nobody make a forum topic when they use the USA flag for english language option. Because it's normal, USA don't speak EXACTLY the same language than English. Why we should do it for canadian flag ?

It doesn't change my feelings or hurt them in any way. It's a rare sight to see a Canadian flag for English language, and that's why I think it's actually cool. To be different. I think countries that practice the same language should do it too. For example Mexico, since, as far as I know, they speak Spanish. Same for Argentina (I just hope I am not terribly wrong, that's what I was lead to think at least).

Look, I am just wonderfully happy not to see my national flag somewhere there. It would be an insult to every single other small country out there.

I was a bit confused at first but lolled a bit when I saw the Canadian flag there... :3

I think it's pretty nice to hev it there. Of course they could always use HM the Queen's Royal Standard instead...

This may come as a surprise to some, but it's to inform you all that you should be writing in proper Canadian English on this forum - none of that "spellchecker Canadian English" or the like, which usually defaults to US English half the time. We're on to you.

No offence to Quebecers (well, Francophones in general), but a fleur-de-lis would sooner suggest French as a possible language to me than the Canadian flag would, as English is the predominate language - and they sure do seem to love their fleur-de-lis there. Maybe a little controversial (for Canada anyway), but one might arguably say there's one true unoffical national anthem, The Maple Leaf Forever, but that's mostly unheard of now and wasn't especially liked by the French at the time either (1867). It's been all but replaced by O Canada now, which is sort of ponderous and a little bland to me - at least compared to that and the Star-Spangled Banner.

Would you suggest the US flag indicates Spanish might be the language spoken in the forum? Sure, maybe not the same thing since it's not the official second language of the US, but I'll go out on a limb (not much of one) and say it might as well be in some parts.

Oh, and GmanFresh, I'm not your buddy, guy. :P

Not to make this thread more absurd, but there's a difference between England and the UK. And there is an English (as in of England) flag: http://en.wikipedia....Flag_of_England. I've sometimes seen that used as a generic English-language icon, but it's always just looked somewhat weird to me in that context.

Seriously, why use the Canadian flag instead of the American flag? In fact, Canadians also speak French, so it contradicts itself. Here in the United States, we speak English, so our flag should be up.
