I like choosing non-humans myself, as making decent looking humans in a character creator is quite annoying.
Personally my favourite choice in Dragon Age is dwarves. All you need to do is subtle tweaks, no complete overhauls.

What annoys me is that Bioware is shortening the races out so they can have a specific story plot.
Customization is eliminated because of story, same deal with the companion gear (appearence).

Simply: a unique looking outfit which fits in with their story vs full customization of character appearence.
Bioware could have just given a unique outfit for each companion, available in personal quest, has really good stats?
An example which is already around is Morrigan and her Robes Of Possession = unique look + full customization.
Instead people are plunged up into the Mass Effect 2 bathroom so that Bioware can make more $.

Just to note: I don't have any qualms with Hawke or his / her story, just the reasons Bioware went with it.

Now to finish this flame potential post with a nice quote from Arl Eamon.. umm.. bob? yeah! Arl Eamon Bob.
"Teyrn Bioware would have us give up our freedoms, our traditions, for new gameplay features!"

Maybe it's just me, but if Bioware is going to elminate customization in favor of anything, my first choice would be story.

Same here.  Lore/story is my weak spot, really.  I could give up just about anything for a really good story as long as the gameplay is still "good".

What I was *trying* to say there (although most likely failing subtlety ) was that if anything is up for the hanging,
customization has a 99% chance of being first in Bioware sequels.
This annoys me because I'm an avid fan of customization and freedoms in all games I play.

Even though I'm actually exactly the same - at least in practice - in that I choose humans almost all the time in fantasy/sci-fi settings, I'm 95% sure this thread is gettin' locked due to the inflammatory thread topic.  We'll see.

In any event I'd rate the chances at Bioware making a future game in which being a human protagonist isn't an option as slim to none.

Same here, except in WoW.  Male humans in WoW are so unbelievabley hideous that I can't bear to look at them...And the women aren't exactly lookers either.

Why on earth would you play a human when you've got cool other races to choose from?

I didn't play a human till like, my third playthrough, and that's only cuz I wanted to see the origin story.

I prefer playing as non-human characters in fantasy settings like Elves.

My bet is it had nothing to do with Story and everything to do with VA, Bioware just went cheap on us and cut out the extra races to save on VA costs. Worst part is it probably wouldn't have been that much more effort to and elves and dwarves. They made 6 origins for DAO, after that even just one per race to "focus the story" more wouldn't have been that much effort, they even say you're not referred to as Hawke most of the time.

Yeah I generally prefer humans but If we were forced to play an elf or dwarf in Dragon age 2 I would be fine with that, I like other races but its just Humans are more appealing to me for some reason. Unless I gets to play a qunari if thats the case the hell yea will I pick them over humans

One thing I noticed with playing as an elf character (I also tried a mage but that didn't last long either) is that the weighting, certainly in the early stages of levelling up, doesn't seem quite right with any of the other races apart from human. When I was going into battles with the elf, I was dying far more easily than the human rogue/warrior class. Though to be fair, I only reached about level 3 before all my saves got mangled.

I've played through twice now as a human (Rogue/Warrior). Just doing the Awakenings one again. I think I will try playing right through as a different class though next time.

I agree with the other posters as regards the way things are going with the DA storyline.

Yeah it's good to improve the graphics but not at the cost of the storyline or the gameplay as it stands. One thing I particularly like about DA series is the humour and interaction plus some of the battles are very challenging. And the puzzles. It just all comes together in DAO/DAOA. There are areas that are a bit weak. Hopefully these will be ironed out for DA2

My last RPG was the original Baldur's gate. Also played one on the Amiga 5000 but can't remember what that was, it was mainly text based. I switched to FPS which are ok but lack originality and depth now.

Just a gut feeling but as with all sequels, I can't help feeling that we will all be slightly disappointed with the DA2 story...

At the end of the day it comes down to time, i.e. BW/EA as with any other software company will run out of it and push another bug ridden game out. And money. Definitely money.

most of the time I play as an female elf or a male human (if i have the choice, that is). but yeah, i do wish that there was aelf option for DA2.
