In the area "West Brecilian Forest," there seems to be a game-breaking bug. Not sure why this only happens to me...

After replicating multiple times, I thought I'd look for some help.

First, the player must enter the Brecilian Forest region and begin "Nature of the Beast." In the western forest, there is an autosave at a three-way leading to the East forest and Great Oak. Moving past this trigger will allow the player to reach the East forest, but any save game made will never load again. (Endless load, 100% CPU usage.) Trying to enter the Great Oak area (to get the critical quest items) will cause a freeze when the first Wild Sylvan is supposed to attack. As the autosave itself is corrupted, it took several tries to replicate.

On a hunch, I looted all dead enemies in the area and killed all remaining enemies in other places. Hoping the burden on the processor was gone, I tried again. No luck, still froze. I lowered video settings to the lowest possible, still no luck.

Has anyone else had this bug? It nailed my last character, corrupting all my saves. Usually freezes don't corrupt save games, so it seems to be two problems in one:
-- Autosave/encounter trigger corrupts some value, then saves the game.
-- Wild Sylvan perception/combat (?) freezes game.

Thing is, Wild Sylvans don't cause me problems at any other point where I can fight them. And I never experienced this bug until updating to 1.04.

Some misc. info:
-- US English DAO + Awakening + All DLC
-- Patch 1.04

As a last resort, I will de-activate all my mods and try again. If that works, I'll note what mods cause this problem. If anyone else has this problem or knows what it is/how to fix it, I would appreciate finding out.

Thank you for your time. Image IPB

Removed all mods and still had the problem. Is this a 1.04 bug?

Hi. No. Never had this bug. Done the forest about 4 times using 1.04. I tried various ways and no problems at all. I use windows 7 ultimate.

Interesting.... maybe it's a Vista problem. If only I had more than one computer to test this on.

I've just about had it with this bug. I lost 3 characters to it, and I have 2 characters that I managed to salvage saves from but can't continue because of this. So I've got some pictures to help visualize, see if anyone knows what's wrong.

Here, I've labeled the area map.
Yellow = Autosave Trigger.
Blue = Wild Sylvan that is trying to turn hostile before the freeze.
Red = The main quest area that becomes innacessable.

Going through the toolset files, nothing should be happening at the trigger area aside from an autosave at this point in the main quest. The game crashes after 2-3 frames of the Wild Sylvan "percieving" me, which is a step or two from the autosave trigger. The Wild Sylvan by the ironbark tree doesn't cause the crash, and it has the same creature script.

I doubt there's an easy fix, but if someone would let me know what's wrong that would be great. Image IPB

Have you tried doing a complete uninstall and reinstall of the game w/o mods?

I may just try that once I find the Origins disk...

If you can't find the disk, EA allows you to install the game via the Download Manager. I bought a new copy of Ultimate Edition recently and used it... it works fine, although it's a huge download and the DM software has to be running to activate the game. You might need your CD Key, however, to use that service... you can find it on the Config menu of the launcher... so I'd write them down (for both Origins and Awakening) before you uninstall.

Well, I found my disk and keys and spent the past 90 minutes re-installing Origins and Awakening. (Patch 1.03). I used by backed-up character save to check on the bug, and it seems to be fixed. I re-installed all the mods I actually use and the bug remained fixed. This basically means that 1.04 is the most likely culprit, precluding any further use of Witch Hunt or Golems of Amgarrak.

So, I suppose I fixed my problem. I just wish it didn't cut me off from other content...

P.S: Is it possible to un-install a patch by removing certain files, or does it overwrite files and can only be removed by uninstalling the whole game? I wanted to check to make sure it's really patch 1.04 before I start ranting. ;)

Patch 1.04, like all the patches, affects the core game programming files.  So, no, I don't thing there's a way to roll it back, at least not that I've seen.

I guess what you're dealing with depends, as Obi-wan would say, on a certain point of view.  You're saying Patch 1.04 causes issues with your 3rd party mods.  I'd say it's the mods at fault.  But to each their own.  ;)

Not really. It's the core game (Brec. Forest) that's bugged once I have patch 1.04. With or without mods, patch 1.03 works while 1.04 doesn't.

I'd say it's the mods at fault.  But to each their own.  ;)

It may actually be my computer. Laptop != Uber Game PC.

Could be, but I don't fault people for automatically choosing a laptop for gaming.  Many's the time I've been stuck somewhere with my little Toshiba notebook and really, really, really wanted to escape through it to Ferelden, the Terminus systems, or even the Final Frontier.... :)

More than likely it's the computer, since I have run at least 20 characters in the past year, with all versions of patches installed and never had a lockup at that point. And I don't exactly run bleeding edge equipment. I've got the game modded beyond belief. Now that I have completed right through to Witch Hunt at least 2 characters of each origin, I am seeing what trouble I can get into with modding the game with everything I find interesting. So far my latest character has had no problems, no crashes, and only the usual lagging with massive use of sustainables and uber the top spellcasting.
