Description:

5-20 minutes after loading up NWN, it crashes.  It's usually in the character creator but I haven't tested otherwise.

Game locks up with the following nwnerror.log: http://paste-it.net/public/df95dcc/

I have monitored GPU temperature, it never goes beyond 50 C.  I play much more GPU intensive games than this, so that temperature is not a problem.

The game also crashes after some minutes on my partner's laptop, which is a Macbook Pro running Windows 7 x64 with Boot Camp.  She has NWN2 installed to the latest patch but did not install MOTB yet.

One quick thing to try is - in the same folder with the nwn2_errorlog.txt file you will see another file created at the same time, nwn2main
Just like that - no extension.

Delete or move this file out and see if that helps. It has been known to cause crashes to repeat.

I tried removing that file, still crashes.

Other things I've tried:
- rebooting
- running as administrator (right click shortcun, run as administrator)

This person seems to have had the same problem, some Nvidia beta drivers fixed his problem.  I'm on ATI so welp.  http://nwn2forums.bi...25791&forum=116

Thanks for the link. I've now looked at that, but I don't have NWN explorer, and the other problems reported had been fixed by subsequent ATI driver updates. Also I am not getting the driver-related error those people did.

Also tried without success:

- running under compatibility mode for XP SP3

- aero is off

You said that you recently installed more RAM in your computer. It might be that one of those RAM sticks is bad and on its way out. BSoDs can be caused by that. Probably not what is happening for you, just thought I'd mention it though.

Here's another possibility:

After it turned out it wasn't overheating I started searching the Internet for people with the same problem and hopefully a fix. I found that I wasn't the only one, but I also discovered that fixes were not easy to come by. However in the end I found a solution and one that actually works, even better yet I found 2 solutions.

The actual problem, which some people started calling the PowerPlay problem, was that the ATI card would keep switching the GPU clock speed between 500 Mhz and 750 Mhz. This would cause the card to, at some point, stop responding as it couldn't cope with the switches. As these switches happened nearly every second when running a 3D game. The switching is normally required when running either a 2D application (500 Mhz, require less GPU) or a 3D application (750 Mhz, require more GPU).

Workaround Solution, should work with any ATI card

The first solution is the easier and safer solution to do. Also this should work on any of the other ATI cards and is not limited to the Sapphire cards only. The solution for this is to fixate the GPU clock speed at 750 Mhz via RivaTuner. To do this the following steps are necessary.
  • Download and install RivaTuner, http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=163
  • After installation, start up RivaTuner.
  • Click on the expansion symbol, in the greyed out text box. This will bring up a list of icons.
  • Click on the first icon in the list shown, it's called Low-level system settings.
  • In the Overclocking tab, tick the "Enable low-level hardware overclocking" box to on.
  • It might be smart to reboot if you have been playing some games / running some apps, either way let RivaTuner detect the speed.
  • Set the core clock speed to 750 Mhz (the speed required for 3D apps)
  • In the section "Overclocking profile settings", type in a profile name (fex. WAR) and click on the disk icon to save the profile.
  • Press OK to be returned to the main RivaTuner screen.
  • Go to the Launcher tab and click on the green + symbol.
  • Choose to add a "Regular item" and press OK
  • Type in a name (fex. WAR), the other boxes should be enabled now.
  • Tick the box "Associated overclocking profile", and select the profile we made in step 8.
  • Tick the "Associated Application" and fill in the path and filename of the warpatch.exe (fex. "C:\\\\Program Files\\\\Warhammer Online - Age of Reckoning\\\\warpatch.exe")
  • Click OK to save the settings.

What we have done now, is create a shortcut inside RivaTuner that we can click on to start up WAR with the changed GPU clock speed. This means that whenever you'd like to run WAR, you should start it via RivaTuner's Launcher tab.
Alternatively, it's possible to have RivaTuner automatically apply the clock speed at the startup of Windows every time you boot. To do this, do everything up until step 7, and then tick the "Apply overclocking at Windows startup" box, and press Save. This will make the GPU clock speed at 750 Mhz all the time. While this is easier, since you don't have to run specific applications, or apply the profile each time, it lets the GPU run at an increased speed even if it's not required.

I have not solved the issue but I noticed it only happens during character creation so I don't care that much.
