I haven't seen this been posted yet, but Gamesradar decided to declare the 7 best new franchises of this generation.

From 7 to 1, they are...

Professor Layton
Assasin's Creed
Gears of War
Left 4 Dead
Bioshock
Uncharted

and the award goes to...
Mass Effect

Why it’s better than the rest: Most franchises take two, even three games to create a rich, multi-layered canon that you can lose yourself in. Mass Effect did it immediately, pulling you into an entire galaxy that was so well constructed and thought out, from alien civilizations to mythology to crushingly boring technical manuals, that you could easily mistake it for a robust, decades-old series. When you combine the conversational penchant of Star Trek with the lasers and doomsday machines of Star Wars, and mix them with stat-driven RPG elements and Gears-style gunplay, the result is a comprehensive franchise that’s almost better than its iconic inspiration.Tossing aliens around with Jedi-like powers is brilliant fun, but the real joy of the game comes from the branching, repercussion-filled dialog trees. Fantastic voice acting brings the large cast to life, and even the low-level people you talk to have something to say or contribute. Naturally you can respond with politeness, but there’s always the Renegade option:

Legacy: 2010’s Mass Effect 2 should be the blueprint for all sequels. BioWare kept what worked, tweaked what didn’t and jettisoned everything that drove us nuts in the first game. The scope was bigger, the worlds were larger and more detailed, even the expanded cast rocked, somehow making an outstanding series even better. By the time the credits rolled, some GR editors fired up another save file right away, ready to dive back in and make different choices in the 40-hour quest. And unlike many other games, the decisions you make can affect the rest of the story, or even story elements in subsequent entries – entire sections of ME2 change depending on how you played ME1, and we expect ME3 to continue the trend in even larger ways. ME2 also delivered on a promise BioWare made for ME1 – frequent DLC that continues the sweeping story. Since its January release we’ve already seen two substantial additions, plus a handful of smaller stories and weapons updates that kept the game in a near-constant state of play.

It’s hard to specify games that are directly inspired by Mass Effect, as it’s such a herculean effort that only a few developers could even try, but there’s no doubt in our eyes it’ll go down as one of the biggest series of this generation and a high water mark for games as a storytelling medium. Now if BioWare could just make the body language as convincing as Uncharted…And for the sake of “You forgot…,” know that we didn’t forget, we excluded. That said, these guys almost made the cut but either fell just shy of “best” or aren’t quite yet “franchise” enough to qualify:

Congrats Bioware, you seem to be winning all of the awards lately, and you totally deserve it.
I also believe that I have discovered why the ME universe is so awesome.

The new franchises from this gen are pretty weak so that's not much of an accomplishment at all.

Though I have to say, I like Gears of War, Uncharted and Demon's Souls (if that counts, which probably doesn't) better.

It is very deserved. Mass Effect is a rich and unique franchise. I just hope BioWare will combine the strengths of the first to games in the third and not go down the path of generic mainstream. ME2 is not quite there yet, but going that direction.

Deserved award anyway.

What exactly do they mean by our generation? This decade? A few years back?

Maybe they mean this console generation? As in XBox360 and PS3?

I will say that I would pick Mass Effect easily but damn if Uncharted 2 really didn't amp up over Uncharted it probably wouldn't have been much of a contest.

Well, when you literally say generation, it's about 30 years, but due to the lack of the very old franchises on the list, I think that we can dismiss that claim. They probably mean this console generation.

Mass effect 2 is a blueprint for all sequals? jeez ,now if they ment  sequals with a plot that doesn't makes any sense.

ok.

That game wasn't supposed to deliver a movie like plot like  mass effect did and i haven't even started about things like the small scoped linear levels, planet scanning and the main protaganist.

*smokes pipe*

I'd swear ME2 felt like a movie more than ME did.

You started talking about a plot-less sequel and now it escalates to linear levels (!), planet scanning and Shepard (?). You can have your own opinion about these stuff, and I am going to suggest that you share it to 'Dissapointment with Mass Effect 2" or PMing me.

But 'plot-less' is just wrong. This is not Pacman or Minesweeper.

If anyone else wants to complain about ME2, you can go do that to the rest of the threads on this forum, since apparently pessimism is widely acceptable. However, if you want to talk about anything else but the subject of the thread, I am going to request a lock.

You know, the disappointment thread should be in this subforum, not in the spoiler forum since that requires that ****ing code you have to register. I still haven't solved my problem yet.

Yay for completely scrapping everything that has potential but didn't work right...

I'm really starting to wonder whether I played the same game than those guys

And what is Professor Layton doing there? What about Dead Space or DA or even Guitar Hero?

Wow. The Mass Effect community is saying Mass Effect should not win awards. I find your lack of faith disturbing.

It's just an opinion brah. Not everyone of the Mass Effect community should be a lover or fanboy.
