I am among a few people that have earned achievements and items in Dragon Age Journeys and subsequently lost them. I have ranted about this on other posts and through those discussions brought me to this topic.

Would Dragon Age Journeys (beta) been better without the achievements and items? I will agree that the items are kinda cool and a couple of the achievements made the game kind of interesting. But a bug causing me to lose some of these has caused me to lose interest in playing additional content for the game. A similar incident happened when I lost my lvl 45 dude in COD4, no matter how much new stuff came down the pipe, I lost interest. However, I think that if there were no items to begin with, I would still be interested in playing more content. What say you?

[Disclaimer: If properly read, this is a completely different topic than my previous posts on related matters. I am not responsible for the forum superheroes that want to complain about people "whining" about a free product. This is just a question for others that may have had this issue or want to post about a relevant topic, not an invite to police the forum.]

This has to be atleast the 3rd thread you've made complaining about Journeys. We get it, you feel wronged and think yourself special to be screwed by a beta. Drop it.

Listen dude, I am asking people if losing items had an effect on their interest in DAJ or any other game for that matter. Has not much to do with my other topics. ****** off.

I probably would have played the game less if they did not have the items there.

Stop hating on Hatecrime, he can't help that he looks perpetually upset.

-----------------------

I kinda agree, the added "bonus items" only served to entice me to try to get them, and now that I got them, I honestly kinda wish I didn't. Not only did the last achievement make me drudge through the campaign three times in a rush, burning me out on the game, but the challenges of killing two creatures at once and surviving an ogre with full health made the game kinda drag on. They were cool challenges, but a bit too unforgiving. I once thought I had done it only to find out after combat was over that my rogue was missing 1hp. I'm not kidding, a single hit point cost me an otherwise kinda difficult achievement.

Of course, rushing through it three times, needing to do the surveys several times due to bugs and losing save games mysteriously made it a painful experience at times...

Yet overall, I enjoyed the game. I didn't really mind achievements. The items were silly, but the idea was neat; Achievements that require other achievements. The only real problem is of course that these achievements serve no game relevant purpose; They were pure metagame concepts.

Therefore nothing I'd ever want to see again.

Dragon Age Journeys would have been much better off without the achievements, unless those achievements were related solely to itself.

Basically, there are two distinct groups of people that play the game.

The first group, and the one I feel is the largest, played almost solely for the item unlocks. The game may have been a nice diversion, even fun at times, but the prime reason to play through, particularly three times, was for items. I know on my second and third runs I did not care what I was doing and had no fun - I plowed through quickly and efficiently.

The second group, the one I feel is much smaller, genuinely enjoys the game and would actually play it for at least a modest length of time even without item unlocks in Dragon Age: Origins. These people do not need incentives to play.

The problem is this: the first group is essentially being bribed to play the game, participating in something they do not really find fun for the pot of gold at the end. This is basically the definition of work.

Why not let the game stand alone? After all, it looks as though for some reason the developers think people might actually keep playing this flash game for a long time, and even pay for it. So why leech off another game's user base like a parasite? It cheapens it and is not consumer-friendly.

With no item unlocks everyone would be happy. The first group would not feel obligated to play and the item unlocks could simply be included freely in the game, and the second group would have played anyway, so they would not care.

Unfortunately, decisions are made by marketing and the publisher, not by some entity that truly has the best interests of the consumer at heart. I bet the actual staff at BioWare, the ones making the game and who care about it, think the whole thing is a load of crap and, if they had their druthers, would not want their masterpiece dragged into the muck of a marketing flash game, but that's corporate life for you. If there is a buck to be made or a way to cross-market to be exploited, it will be, somehow.

@Sornin: I honestly didn't think the game was bad. I actually thought it was quite a bit of fun. If it wasn't related to Dragon Age, would I have played it long enough to start enjoying it? Probably not. But the fact that it was tied to the game, gave me a little bit of what to expect in the way of gear, money, spells, etc.; made me play it long enough to start liking it. It had a nice tactical element to it that I could play casually. The game could be even better if they improve the environment graphics and some of the dialog/choices.

I just find it funny that my loss of the items has drained most of my interest. Had everything gone smoothly, I might have paid a couple of bucks for a few more quests and areas to explore. But now I am not really all that interested.

I also find it odd that I am the type of guy that does not want stuff given to me in game that I did not earn, but while playing DAJ, attaining the items was kind of fun. I guess I still have the stupid belt, but I don't think I will actually use it in the game if it is just given to me. I would say that they need to come up with a way to present each item to you like in a mini quest or perhaps an NPC merchant "importer" that you still have to buy the item from. Then I wouldn't feel so much like it was cheating. Oblivion had mods that added armor and weapons but you still had to buy them in shops and it didn't feel like it was cheating as long as the item wasn't overpowered.

We that some users have reported issues with the Unlocks in DAJ, such as those described in this thread. We are currently in a beta and, as is common, expect these sorts of hiccups to appear along the way. We are keeping track of users who are reporting difficulty with their unlocks and will be taking care of these users as soon as possible.
