In all honesty, the main reason you should be excited for this game is entirely because of the lore and the detailed world.

"...the same streamlining that occurred between Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 is occurring here between Dragon Age and its upcoming sequel."
"...a shift away from more hardcore RPG nature of its predecessor."
I foresee flames. Thread's gonna burn!
(P.S. - Not that I don't appreciate the preview; thanks for finding and posting it)

The action, while still offering players the option to micro-manage their strategy, was considerably more fluid and action-oriented than in the previous game, requiring less pause-and-play for those who simply want to map their abilities and mash a few buttons.
...
Overall, it was a short-and-sweet demo, but even in that brief period of time we were able to get a sense that Dragon Age II will be a more manageable, action-intensive experience and a shift away from more hardcore RPG nature of its predecessor. With a release date coming in March, we’re confident that we’ll see even more in the weeks to come.
Hm..........

No offense, but I think it's a tad rude to claim people--a specific group of people--are going to march in and overreact. I don't see anyone who dislikes the changes marching into positive preview threads saying "Ha ha, here comes all those BioWare apologists!".
No offense taken, seeing as how I didn't specify any particular group. I agree that if I had, it would have been quite rude. But, based on what's frequently seen in these forums, I'd say it's a pretty reasonable prediction that at least a couple people are going to overreact to the statements made in the preview, no?

just because it will be less "hardcore" than DA:O, it doesn't mean that the game will be boring.

I read quite a bit, that's where I get my "lore and detailed world" fixes from. The best video game isn't going to be able to do those things as well as even a crappily written novel. I play vids for game mechanics. Streamlined and simplified are not the kind of mechanics I find entertaining. I find things that are too easy and unconvoluted to be boring. (not that there is anything intrinsically wrong with those types of games, they just aren't for me)
Granted I can always stick to my strategy games, and indy rpg's, but Bioware has been good for more strategy based RPG's before, so the disappointment they are moving away from the more PnP type of RPG's is understandable imo.
It's also understandable that they don't want to be making niche rpg's forever, and might want to put their kids through school at some point too however, so I think respectful disappointment is called for. Not...that it would ever not be.

Not for me, though those definitely help. I'm excited because of the added focus on making the game more cinematic, as well as the combat.

yes, people almost never take that into consideration.Gill Kaiser wrote...
All the previews have been of the console versions so far, so I reserve judgement.
I'm a console gamer...PC games are hard to adjust to after spending ur life playing console games. I tried playing crysis, and deus ex(though i finished this one) on the PC, and it was just too hard...so i can't see myself hating(or even feeling a bit disappointed) bioware for the changes the've made to the game, though i do sympathize with the hardcore fans.

I'll just hold my tongue and only say that it would be very nice if they'd at least show the PC version to preview article writing individuals one of these days. Cause while "a shift away from more hardcore RPG nature" of Origins may appeal to some, for a good many others, its stuff like that being repeated over and over which makes DA2 look very unappealing.

"Our immediate impressions from the scant ten minutes we were able to play is that the same streamlining that occurred between Mass Effect[/i] and Mass Effect 2[/i] is occurring here between Dragon Age[/i] and its upcoming sequel."
I really need to quit reading these reviews.
Once again, Laidlaw has to enter the lion's den and explain why this isn't an entry level RPG.

No panic, just an accumulation of reviews that contradict what the devs have said about the game. It's a result of Bioware's unique marketing tactic, to show something and then explain it away.

So it will be intense, there will be some action, it won't be slow as a slug, it will be entertaining to watch, the sky is falling. Role playing is taking on the role of a character that is not you, making their story happen the way you want, or watching it happen the way it does around them based on the written story.
DA2 will be awesome, and i am excited that they changed some things from origins.
