Blood Wound is Crushing Prison on every foe in a Blizzard-sized area, without friendly fire. If you can assure your mage won't be getting much/any return fire, you can use mana for sustainables and use blood magic to toss fireballs all the time.
Better AoE damage - Inferno/Fireball/Greease or Perfect Storm?

It is one of the very limited number of stuns that you can use at close quarters without ill effects on your own party e.g. I use it a lot on my shape-shifting mage i.e. press pause, activate blood mode and stun them with ‘Blood Wound’ in order to bye time for a shift into bear/ spider.
